Beta-nerve growth factor promotes neurogenesis and angiogenesis during the repair of bone defects

We previously showed that the repair of bone defects is regulated by neural and vascular signals. In the present study, we examined the effect of topically applied β-nerve growth factor（β-NGF） on neurogenesis and angiogenesis in critical-sized bone defects filled with collagen bone substitute. We created two symmetrical defects, 2.5 mm in diameter, on either side of the parietal bone of the skull, and filled them with bone substitute. Subcutaneously implanted osmotic pumps were used to infuse 10 μgβ-NGF in PBS（β-NGF ＋ PBS） into the right-hand side defect, and PBS into the left（control） defect, over the 7 days following surgery. Immunohistochemical staining and hematoxylin-eosin staining were carried out at 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days postoperatively. On day 7, expression of β III-tubulin was lower on the β-NGF ＋ PBS side than on the control side, and that of neurofilament 160 was greater. On day 14, β III-tubulin and protein gene product 9.5 were greater on the β-NGF ＋ PBS side than on the control side. Vascular endothelial growth factor expression was greater on the experimental side than the control side at 7 days, and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 expression was elevated on days 14 and 21, but lower than control levels on day 28. However, no difference in the number of blood vessels was observed between sides. Our results indicate that topical application of β-NGF promoted neurogenesis, and may modulate angiogenesis by promoting nerve regeneration in collagen bone substitute-filled defects.

Sintering effects on chemical and physical properties of bioactive ceramics

The objective of this study was to characterize the chemical and physical properties of bioactive ceramics prepared from an aqueous paste containing hydroxyapatite(HA)and beta tri-calcium phosphate(β-TCP).Prior to formulating the paste,HA andβ-TCP were calcined at 800℃and 975℃(11 h),milled,and blended into 15%/85%HA/β-TCP volume-mixed *** cylindrical rods were subsequently sintered to 900℃,1100℃or 1250℃.The sintered specimens were characterized by helium pycnometry,X-ray diffraction(XRD),Fourier transform-infrared(FT-IR),and inductively coupled plasma(ICP)spectroscopy for evaluation of porosity,crystalline phase,functional-groups,and Ca:P ratio,*** properties were assessed via 3-point bending and diametral *** microstructural evaluation using scanning electron microscopy(SEM)showed larger pores and a broader pore size distribution(PSD)for materials sintered at 900℃and 1100℃,whereas the 1250℃samples showed more uniform *** quantification showed significantly higher porosity for materials sintered to 900℃and 1250℃(pl deviations from the 15%/85%HA/β-TCP formulation following sintering where lower amounts of HA were observed when sintering temperature was *** testing demonstrated significant differences between calcination temperatures and different sintering regimes(pl composition and mechanical properties of bioactive ceramics were direct consequences of calcination and sintering.

Highly Stable Silicon–Carbon–Nitrogen Composite Anodes from Silsesquiazane for Rechargeable lithium-Ion Battery

Herein, we developed novel silicon-carbon-nitrogen （SiCN） composites synthesized by pyrolyzing silsesquiazane polymer as an anode material for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Among variable pyrolysis temperatures of 700 ℃, 1000 ℃ and 1300 ℃, the SiCN composites prepared at 1000 ℃ showed the highest capacity with outstanding battery cycle life by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Such good battery and electrochemical performances should be attributed to a proper ratio of carbon and nitrogen or oxygen in the SiCN composites. Furthermore, our SiCN electrode possessed better lithium ion conductivity than pure silicon nanoparticles. This work demonstrates that polymer-derived composites are among the promising strategies to achieve highly stable silicon anodes for rechargeable batteries.

Single π0electro-production in the resonance region with ClAS＊

We report the analysis status of single π0electroproduction in the resonance region to study the electromagnetic excitation of the nucleon resonances. The study is aimed at understanding of the internal structure and dynamics of the nucleon. The experiment was performed using an unpolarized cryogenic hydrogen target and 2.0 and 5.8 GeV polarized electron beam during the ele and e1-6 run periods with ClAS at Jefferson lab. The new measurements will produce a data base with high statistics and large kinematic coverage for the hadronic invariant mass （W） up to 2.0 CeV in the momentum transfer （Q2） range of 0.3--6.0 GeV2. Preliminary results will be presented and compared with the various model calculations.

Formulation of Reduction Rate for Ultimate Compressive Strength of Stiffened Panel Induced by Opening

The main objective of this study is to numerically investigate the characteristics of ultimate compressive strength of stiffened panels with opening and also to fit the design-oriented formulae. For this purpose, three series of well executed experimental data on longitudinally stiffened steel plates with and without opening subjected to the uniform axial in-pane load which is carried out to study the buckling and post-buckling up to the final failure are chosen. Also, a nonlinear finite element method capable of efficiently analyzing the large elasto-plastic deflection behavior of stiffened panels is developed and used for simulation. The feasibility of the present simulation process is confirmed by a good agreement with the experimental results. More case studies are developed employing the simulation process to analyze the influence of various design variables on the reduction rate of ultimate strength of stiffened panel induced by opening. Based on the computed results, two design formulae are fitted and the accuracy of design formulae is studied. Furthermore, the viability of the design formulae for practical engineering is proved.

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition of gas hydrate-bearing sediment from Hydrate Ridge,Cascadia Margin

54 sediments were sampled at 5 sites, 1244, 1245, 1246,1250 and 1251 from ODPleg 204, Hydrate Ridge, Cascadia Margin. The stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition,δ^(13)C of organic matter and δ^(15)N, have been used to characterize the depositional variationof sediments with gas hydrate bearing. Values of δ^(13)C of bulk organic matter range between-22.37 per thousand and -24.72 per thousand PDB, with a mean value of -23.54 ± 1.17 per thousandPDB; δ^(15)N of the same sedimentary samples range from 3.30 per thousand to 5.68 per thousand,with a mean value of 4.49 ± 1.19 per thousand; Values of C/N ratio range from 4.53 to 9.26, with amean value of 6.90 ± 2.37. The occurrence of gas hydrate changed the diagenetic evolution trend ofthe carbon and nitrogen in organic matter. The δ^(15)N and C/N ratio depletion suggest that thenitrogen fixation related with the bacteria/archaea maybe occurred in the sediments near thehydrate. The stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition could be used to evaluate thedepositional environment in the study area.

The wide use of manganese dioxide(MnO_(2))as an electrode in all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitors(ASCs)remains challenging because of its low electrical *** complication can be circumvented by introducing trivalent gadolinium(Gd)ions into the MnO_(2).Herein,we describe the successful hydrothermal synthesis of crystalline Gd-doped MnO_(2) nanorods with Ni(OH)_(2) nanosheets as cathode,which we combined with Fe_(3)O_(4)/GO nanospheres as anode for all-solid-state *** tests dem on strate that Gd dopi ng sign ifica ntly affected the electrochemical activities of the MnO_(2),which was further enhanced by introducing Ni(OH)_(2).The GdMnO_(2)/Ni(OH)_(2) electrode offers sufficient surface electrochemical activity and exhibits excellent specific capacity of 121.8 mA h g^(-1),at 1A g^(-1),appealing rate performance,and ultralong lifetime stability(99.3%retention after 10,000 discharge tests).Furthermore,the GdMnO_(2)/Ni(OH)_(2)//PVA/KOH//Fe_(3)O_(4)/GO solid-state ASC device offers an impressive specific energy density(60.25 W h kg^(-1))at a high power density(2332 W kg^(-1)).This investigation thus shows its large potential in developing novel approaches to energy storage devices.

Electrokinetic-mechanism of water and furfural oxidation on pulsed laser-interlaced Cu_(2)O and CoO on nickel foam

The electrocatalytic oxidation of biomass-derived furfural(FF)feedstocks into 2-furoic acid(FA)holds immense industrial potential in optics,cosmetics,polymers,and ***,we fabricated Co O/Ni O/nickel foam(NF)and Cu_(2)O/Ni O/NF electrodes via in situ pulsed laser irradiation in liquids(PlIl)for the bifunctional electrocatalysis of oxygen evolution reaction(OER)and furfural oxidation reaction(FOR),*** oxidation of NF surface to NiO and deposition of CoO and/or Cu_(2)O on NF during PlIl offer distinct advantages for enhancing both the OER and ***/NiO/NF electrocatalyst provides a consistently low overpotential of~359 m V(OER)at 10 m A/cm^(2),achieving the maximum FA yield(~16.37 m M)with 61.5%selectivity,79.5%carbon balance,and a remarkable Faradaic efficiency of~90.1%during 2 h of FOR at 1.43 V(*** hydrogen electrode).Mechanistic pathway via in situ electrochemical-Raman spectroscopy on CoO/NiO/NF reveals the involvement of phase transition intermediates(NiOOH and CoOOH)as surface-active centers during electrochemical *** carbonyl carbon in FF is attacked by hydroxyl groups to form unstable hydrates that subsequently undergo further oxidation to yield FA *** method holds promise for large-scale applications,enabling simultaneous production of renewable building materials and fuel.
