Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are bioelectrochemical systems that convert chemical energy contained in organic matter into electrical energy by using the catalytic (metabolic) activity of living microorganisms. Mediator-less two chamber H-type MFCs were constructed in the current study, using dairy digester microbial population as anode inocula to convert finely ground pine tree (Avicel) at 2% (w/v) to electricity. MFCs were placed at 37°C and after the circuit voltage was stabilized on d9, bovine rumen microorganisms cultured anaerobically for 48 hrs in cellulose broth media were added to treatment group of MFC at 1% v/v dosage. MFC power and current across an external resistor were measured daily for 10 d. At the end of incubation on d19 head space gas and anode chamber liquid solutions were collected and analyzed for total gas volume and composition, and volatile fatty acids, respectively. Addition of enriched rumen microorganisms to anaerobic anode chamber increased cellulose digestibility and increased both CO2 and methane production;however, it decreased the methane to CO2 ratio. Over the experimental period, electricity generation was increased with rumen microorganism addition, and power density normalized to anode surface area was 17.6 to 67.2 mW/m2 with average of 36.0 mW/m2 in treatment, while control group had 3.6 to 21.6 (AVE 12.0) mW/m2. These observations imply that biocatalysis in MFCs requires additional cellulolytic activities to utilize structural biomass in bioenergy production.

Dioscorea batatas Decne(DBD)has been used to heal various illnesses of the kidney and intestine as an herbal medicine in *** a source of therapeutic agents,many glycoproteins have been isolated from mushrooms and plants,but the functional role of glycoprotein in intestinal epithelial wound healing has not been understood *** the present study,we investigated the wound healing potentials of the 30 kDa glycoprotein(DBD glycoprotein)isolated from DBD in human intestinal epithelial(INT-407)*** found that DBD glycoprotein(100μg·mL^-1)significantly increased the motility of INT-407 cells for 24 h by activating protein kinase C(PKC).DBD glycoprotein stimulated the activation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK),which is responsible for the phosphorylation of NF-κB inhibitorα(IκBα).DBD glycoprotein increased the level of profilin-1(PFN1),α-actinin and F-actin expression via activation of transcription factor,nuclear factor-kappa B(NF-κB)during its promotion of cell *** mouse colitis was induced by adding dextran sulfate sodium(DSS)to the drinking water at a concentration of 4%(W/V)for 7 *** figured out that administration of DBD glycoprotein(10 and 20 mg·kg-1)lowers the levels of disease activity index and histological inflammation in DSS-treated ICR *** this regard,we suggest that DBD glycoprotein has ability to promote the F-actin-related migration signaling events via activation of PKC and NF-κB in intestinal epithelial cells and prevent inflammatory bowel disease.

Background： Antihypertensive drugs have been linked to new-onset osteoporotic fracture （NOF）, and different classes of antihypertensive drugs may alter the risk for the development of NOF; however, the classic effect of different antihypertensive drugs on the development of NOF in the elderly has not been well studied during long-term follow-up. Methods： In this study, we investigated the association between different classic antihypertensives and the development of NOF in the elderly. This was a longitudinal cohort study performed using data from claim forms submitted to the Taiwan Bureau of National Health Insurance in Central Taiwan, China including case patients with NOF aged 65–80 years from January 2002 to December 2012 and non-NOF controls. Prescriptions for antihypertensives before the index date were retrieved from a prescription database. We estimated the hazard ratios （HR s） of NOF associated with antihypertensive use. Non-NOF controls served as the reference group. Results： A total of 128 patients with NOF were identified from among 1144 patients with hypertension during the study period. The risk of NOF after adjusting age, sex, comorbidities, and concurrent medications was higher among the users of angiotensin-converting enzyme （ACE） inhibitors （HR, 1.64; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01–2.66） than among nonusers. Patients who took calcium channel blockers （CCBs）（HR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.49–0.99） were at a lower risk of developing NOF than nonusers. Loop diuretics, thiazide diuretics, angiotensin receptor blocker, beta-blocker, and alpha-blocker were not associated with the risk of NOF. Conclusions： Elderly with hypertension who take CCBs are at a lower risk of NOF and that the use of ACE inhibitors was associated with a significantly increased risk of developing NOF during the 11-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND Burnout,musculoskeletal pain,and sharps injuries(SIs)affect medical *** To establish a model between SIs,burnout,and the risk factors to assess the extent to which burnout affects *** This questionnaire was used for an observational and cross-sectional study,which was based on members at a hospital affiliated with a medical university in Taichung,Taiwan,in *** valid responses constituted 68.5%(1734 of 2531).The items were drawn from the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire and Copenhagen burnout inventory and concerned work experience,occupational category,presence of chronic diseases,sleep duration,overtime work,and work *** analysis,chi-square test,Fisher exact test,Multiple linear,logistic regression and Sobel test were *** present analyses were performed using SAS Enterprise Guide 6.1 software(SAS Institute Inc.,Cary,NC,United States),and significance was set at P Q3) and highwork-related burnout (> Q3) mediated the relationship between SIs and frequentlower limb pain. Similarly, frequent lower limb pain mediated the relationship ofSIs with high personal and high work-related burnout. High personal and highwork-related burnout mediated the relationships of SIs with overtime work andirregular shift work. S-allyl-L-cysteine (SAC) is an organosulfur compound derived from aged garlic extract (AGE). Studies have reported that AGE possesses bioprotective capacity, including antidiabetic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antitumor effects. The present study examined the protective effects of SAC against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Ten male Wistar rats aged 11 - 12 weeks were randomly divided into two groups (five rats/group) as control and SAC groups. All rats had ad libitum access to water, and the SAC group received water containing SAC intragastrically (200 mg/kg) once daily for five consecutive weeks. In the fifth experimental week, 50% CCl4 in olive oil (1 mL/kg) was administered intraperitoneally three times a week to induce liver injury in both groups. Rats were sacrificed at 24 hours after the last CCl4 injection, and liver tissues were excised for histopathological, immunohistochemical and antioxidant analyses. 背景强迫症是一种较为常见的慢性、致残的疾病，患者出现无法自控的强迫思维及强迫行为。10％以上的强迫症病人对药物和行为治疗无效。对一些常规治疗无效的难治性强迫症患者，神经外科已经开展一些手术治疗，例如：扣带前回毁损、脑白质切断术、尾状核下束切断、内囊前支毁损。扣带前回毁损相对来说比较安全同时没有明显的副作用，但是也有术后存在认知障碍的报道。为判断立体定向双侧扣带前回毁损是否是一种适合难治性强迫症的治疗，我们评价了立体定向双侧扣带前回毁损术的长期疗效及其副作用。方法患者筛选：在1999年3月至2003年4月间，17例难治性强迫症患者（男10例，女7例）接受了双侧扣带前回毁损术，并且接受了超过2年的随访。患者的选择标准如下：患者符合美国精神障碍诊断与统计手册第4版（DSM-Ⅳ）强迫症的诊断标准，病程超过3年，疾病导致社会心理功能降低。每位患者皆由两位精神科医师依照DSM-Ⅳ的AxisⅠ和AxisⅡ的疾病诊断标准行临床诊断。如伴有精神病性症状，就先用一线药物彻底治疗。手术方法：立体定向的靶点通过与MRI配套的Leksell适配器，在GESigma1．5 T的机器上得以确认。局部麻醉下，在两侧的冠状缝中线外20mm颅骨钻孔。将尖端直径．1．8mm，长度10mm的电极插至靶点，用85℃，90S进行射频毁损。在双侧扣带前回，每侧各4个射频毁损灶，2个针道。第一个射频毁损灶在两侧侧脑室前角后缘15mm，侧脑室顶部上2mm，旁开中线7mm处。射频电极接着回撤8mm，制作第二个射频毁损灶。第三个射频毁损处在两侧侧脑室前角后缘22mm，侧脑室顶部上2mm，旁开中线7mm处。再往上8mm，制作第四个射频毁损灶。结果是出现类似椭圆柱形的射频毁损灶，大约高18mm、前后径13mm，横径6mm。术前和术后随访评估：两位精神科医师用Yale-Brown强迫症量表（Y-BOCS）、临床总体印象量表（CGI）、汉密顿抑郁量表（HAMD）、汉密顿焦虑量表（HAMA），分别在手术前1个月、术后12个月、术后24个月对患者进行评估。评估的精神科医师接受了培训，Kappa值超过0．75，以确保评估的准确性。在我们研究中，患者的Y-BOCS得分改善35％或更高、CGI评分为1（极其显著改善）或者2（显著改善）；由专业的临床精神科医生对患者进行一套固定的神经心理测试，测试分别在术前1个月、术后12个月、24个月进行。这些测试包括：K—WAIS测验，视觉空间功能（RCFT），Hopkins语言学习测验（HVLT），威斯康星卡片分类测验（WCST），口语流畅测验（COWAT）。K-WAIS评分由韦氏成人智力量表（WAIS—R）改编而来，以产生总智商（IQ）、言语IQ和行为IQ来测量智力水平。RCFT评分用于测试空间构建能力。记忆力也包括回忆的精确性、瞬时回忆、延迟回忆和识别指数等的得分。HVLT用于测量口头记忆能力和学习能力。使用WCST和COWAT评分来检查认知的灵活性和执行功能。在WCST中，正确、错误反应的总数，完成的项目数，持续的反应，持续的错误数都用于评分。COWAT评分采用字母翻译和目录翻译的单词数目，字母翻译用来检查语音的流利，目录翻译用来评价语义流利性。使用Wileoxon符号秩检验对术前的Y—BOCS，HAMD，HAMA评分和术后6、12个月的评分进行比较，使用Wileoxon符号秩检验对手术前和手术后12个月的K—WAIS，RCFT，HVLT，WCST，COWAT评分进行比较。统计软件采用SPSS10。结果扣带回毁损术后强迫、抑郁、焦虑症状均改善：Y-BOCS，CGI、HAMD，HAMA评分显示了扣带回毁损术的有效性，在12个月的随访中，与术前Y-BOCS评分相比，改善率为36％，在24个月的随访中，改善率升至48％。术前、术后认知功能和记忆的改变：手术前和手术后24个月的K-WAIS，RCFT，HVLT，COWAT评分没有显著性差异。在WCST评分中，与术前基线相比，术后的错误总数、持续错误数和反应数明显减少。术后的错误总数、持续错误数和反应数的改变说明在扣带回毁损术后执行功能的提高。在术后2—3个月，3例患者有记忆障碍，但持续时间少于2个月。结论强迫症的扣带回毁损术术后24个月的随访结果显示症状明显改善，但没有认知功能的改变，包括智商、言语、视觉空间记忆和执行功能等均没有改变。

Ascorbic Acid Attenuates Acute Ethanol-Induced Liver Injury in SMP30 Knockout Mice

Ascorbic acid (AA) is recognized as a free radical scavenger that protects cells from oxidative stress-induced damage. However, no studies have investigated the role of AA in acute alcoholic liver disease using senescence marker protein-30 (SMP30) knockout (KO) mice. SMP30 is a novel 34-kDa protein involved in AA biosynthesis. The present study aimed to elucidate the physiological functions of AA in acute ethanol-induced liver injury using SMP30 KO mice, which cannot synthesize AA in vivo. After a 4-week experimental period, mice were divided into six groups. The following three groups comprised the ethanol treatment groups: WT-E group (wild-type), KV-E group (AA-supplemented), and KT-E group (AA-deficient). Mice were exposed to an acute dose of ethanol (6 g ethanol/kg) administered by gavage once a day for three days. The other three control groups, namely, WT-C, KV-C, and KT-C control groups, received an equal volume of water via oral administration. Analysis of changes in body weight showed that mice in the KT-E group had significant loss of body weight compared to the control, KV-E, and WT-E groups. Behavioral analysis revealed that alcohol exposure significantly increased alcohol sensitivity in the KT-E group, whereas the WT-E, KV-E, and control groups developed ethanol tolerance. Aspartate transaminase (AST) levels in the KT-E group were significantly higher than those in the control, KV-E, and WT-E groups. The number of large and binucleated hepatocytes was significantly higher in the KT-E group than in the KV-E and WT-E groups. In addition, cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) was over expressed in the central vein in the KT-E group when compared to the KV-E and WT-E groups. Our current findings indicate that AA supplementation in SMP30 KO mice can alleviate alcohol-induced liver damage by down regulating CYP2E1 expression. Do China's Outward Direct Investors Prefer Countries with High Political Risk? An International and Empirical Comparison

This paper focuses on a conventional debate regarding whether Chinese outward direct investors tend to invest in countries with high political risk. Using 2003 -2011 data from the World Bank, the Heritage Foundation and the KOF Swiss Economic Institute, we investigate China ＇s political risk distribution and political risk index （PRI）. Our results indicate that China ＂s political risk index was ranked 48th among 153 economies in 2011, in the lower risk level of the PRI spectrum. In an international comparison of political risk distribution, the proportion of Chinese outward direct investment （ODI） among countries with high political risk is less than the world average. The Chinese ODI political risk index has significantly improved and remains lower than the world average. To improve Chinese ODI PRI, the Chinese Government should continue to implement differentiation strategies and to offer official development assistance to improve the investment environment in developing countries and reduce political risk.
