Effects of electroacupuncture on the functionality of NG2-expressing cells in perilesional brain tissue of mice following ischemic stroke

Neural/glial antigen 2(NG2)-expressing cells has multipotent stem cell activity under cerebral *** study examined the effects of electroacupuncture(EA)therapy(2 Hz,1 or 3 mA,20 minutes)at the Sishencong acupoint on motor function after ischemic insult in the brain by investigating the rehabilitative potential of NG2-derived cells in a mouse model of ischemic *** stimulation alleviated motor deficits caused by ischemic stroke,and 1 mA EA stimulation was more efficacious than 3 mA EA stimulation or positive control treatment with edaravone,a free radical *** properties of NG2-expressing cells were altered with 1 mA EA stimulation,enhancing their survival in perilesional brain tissue via reduction of tumor necrosis factor alpha *** stimulation robustly activated signaling pathways related to proliferation and survival of NG2-expressing cells and increased the expression of neurotrophic factors such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor,tumor growth factor beta,and neurotrophin *** the perilesional striatum,EA stimulation greatly increased the number of NG2-expressing cells double-positive for oligodendrocyte,endothelial cell,and microglia/macrophage markers(CC1,CD31,and CD68).EA therapy also greatly activated brain-derived neurotrophic factor/tropomyosin receptor kinase B and glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta *** results indicate that EA therapy may prevent functional loss at the perilesional site by enhancing survival and differentiation of NG2-expressing cells via the activation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor-induced signaling,subsequently ameliorating motor *** animal experiments were approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of Pusan National University(approval ***2019-2199 and PNU2019-2884)on April 8,2019 and June 19,2019.

Clinical analysis of risk factors contributing to recurrence of pterygium after excision and graft surgery

AIM: To find the risk factors related to the reproliferation of the pterygial tissue after excision and graft ***: Charts of 130 eyes of 130 patients who had pterygial excision from March 2006 to April 2011 were reviewed. Preoperative pterygium morphology, surgical methods, and adjunctive treatments were statistically analyzed for their relationship with ***: During the follow-up period, recurrence was observed in 20 eyes(15.4%). None of the preoperative morphologic features were affected the rate of the recurrence. However, an age <40y [P =0.085, odds ratio(OR) 3.609, 95% confidence interval(CI) 0.838-15.540]and amniotic membrane graft instead of conjunctival autograft(P =0.002, OR 9.093, 95% CI 2.316-35.698) were statistically significant risk factors for *** analysis revealed that intraoperative mitomycin C(MMC)(P =0.072, OR 0.298, 95% CI 0.080-1.115)decreased the rate of recurrence. CONCLUSION: Younger age is a risk factor for reproliferation of pterygial tissue after excision and amniotic membrane transplantation(AMT) are less effective in preventing recurrence of pterygium after excision based on the comparison between conjunctival autograft and AMT. Intraoperative MMC application and conjunctival autograft reduce recurrence.

Early prediction of myocardial viability after acute myocardial infarction by two-dimensional speckle tracking imaging

Background Identifying the transmural extent of myocardial necrosis and the degree of myocardial viability in acute myocardial infarction （AMI） is important clinically. The aim of this study was to assess myocardial viability using two-dimensional speckle tracking imaging （2D-STI） in patients with AMI. Methods 2D-STI was performed at initial presentation, three days, and six months after primary percutaneous coronary intervention （PCI） in 30 patients with AMI, who had a left anterior descending coronary artery （LAD） culprit lesion. In addition, 20 patients who had minimal stenotic lesions （〈 30% stenosis） on coronary angiography were also included in the control group. At six months dobutamine echocardiography was performed for viability assessment in seven segments of the LAD territory. According to the recovery of wall motion abnormality, segments were classified as viable or non-viable. Results A total of 131 segments were viable, and 44 were nonviable. Multivariate analysis revealed significant differences between the viable and nonviable segments in the peak systolic strain, the peak systolic strain rate at initial presentation, and peak systolic strain rate three days after primary PCI. Among these, the initial peak systolic strain rate had the highest predictive value for myocardial viability （hazard ratio： 31.22, P 〈 0.01）. Conclusions 2D-STI is feasible for assessing myocardial viability, and the peak systolic strain rate might be the most reliable predictor of myocardial viability in patients with AMI.

Background:Although craniospinal irradiation (CSI) of 2340 cGy plus tumor booster with chemotherapy have been established as a standard treatment of childhood average-risk (AvR) medulloblastoma (MBL) in Western counties,there are a few recent reports in outcomes ofAvR MBL using this strategy in Korean and other Asian *** investigated the outcome of the Korean children with AvR MBL who were treated with CSI <2500 cGy and ***:Between January 2001 and December 2010,clinical characteristics and outcomes of 42 patients who were diagnosed with AvR MBL postoperatively and treated with radiation including CSI <2500 cGy and chemotherapy in Seoul National University Children's Hospital were ***:Their median age was 9 years (range:3-18.8),and 29 were *** subtypes were classic type in 28 patients,nodular/desmoplastic in 7,and large cell/anaplastic (LCA) in *** the patients received adjuvant radiotherapy (CSI with median 2340 cGy and booster) and multiagent chemotherapy as the first-fine *** a median follow-up of 54 months,12 patients experienced relapse or progression of the *** 3-and 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rates were 78.0%±6.5% and 75.0%±6.9%,respectively,and overall survival (OS) rates were 85.3%±5.6% and 76.8%±6.9%,*** LCA subtype was associated with poorer DFS (P=0.023) and OS (P=0.008),compared with non-LCA ***:The outcomes of children and adolescents with AvR MBL treated with radiation including CSI <2500 cGy and chemotherapy,are compatible to those in Western countries;however,the LCA subtype has a poor outcome with this strategy.

Regulation of the Li_(2)CO_(3) byproduct is the most critical challenge in the field of non-aqueous Li–O_(2) *** considerable efforts have been devoted to preventing Li_(2)CO_(3) formation,no approaches have suggested the ultimate solution of utilizing the clean Li_(2)O_(2) reaction instead of that of Li_(2)CO_(3).Even if extremely pure O_(2) is used in a Li–O_(2) cell,its complete elimination is impossible,eventually generating CO_(2) gas during *** this paper,we present the new concept of a CO_(2)-adsorbent spongy electrode(CASE),which is designed to trap the evolved CO_(2) using adsorption *** candidates composed of amine functional groups(–NH2)for capturing CO_(2) were screened,with quadrapurebenzylamine(QPBZA)exhibiting superior CO_(2)-adsorbing ability among the proposed ***,we fabricated the CASE by sandwiching QPBZA between porous carbon layers,which facilitated the transport of gaseous *** new electrode was demonstrated to effectively capture the evolved CO_(2) during charge,therefore altering the reaction pathways to the ideal *** is highly advantageous to mitigate the undesirable CO_(2) incorporation in the next discharge,resulting in improved *** novel concept of a CO_(2)-sponging electrode provides an alternative route to the realization of practically meaningful Li–O_(2) batteries.

Turbulent vortex trains in narrow square arrayed rod bundles of a dual-cooled nuclear reactor

The dual-cooled nuclear reactor is currently considered for improving the designs of current/future nuclear reactors. Investigation of the thermal-hydraulic characteristics of the nuclear reactor via experiments is essential for commercializing the dual-cooled nuclear reactor. In this paper, the turbulent flow in square arrayed six-rod bundles in the form of magnified copies of the dual-cooled and current OPR-1000 nuclear reactor is experimentally investigated by means of hot-wire anemometry and smoke-wire generation methods. Vortex trains which do not exist in an ordinary reactor subchannel are presented in the subchannel of the dual-cooled reactor. The vortices are induced by a span-wise velocity gradient. This flow pulsation phenomenon increases the inter-channel mixing of the subchannel. To understand the periodic feature of the pulsation, axial/cross velocities are measured and the periodic characteristic frequencies are obtained by a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis. The peak frequency that represents the quasi-periodic pulsation of the flow is increased with an increase in the axial velocity while the wavelength of the pulsation remains constant within a tested range of the Reynolds number (9000 51000). The vortex trains are highly synchronized with each other, as confirmed by means of visualization.

Measles outbreaks in the Kyeongin area of the Republic of Korea,2013-2014:A single-center experience in a country of measles elimination

Objective: To identify the source of infection and determine the clinical features and laboratory finding of measles infection,Methods: In 27 measles patients,except for 3 adult patients,the rest of 24 pediatric measles cases were analyzed with regard to age,sex,immunization status,transmission routes and molecular genotyping of measles virus,Eighteen measles patients who admitted in isolation ward were set apart to investigate clinical findings and its correlation with laboratory characteristics,Retrospective analysis of cases was conducted in this study,Results: Of the 24 pediatric patients,23(95.8%) had not received any measles-containing vaccine(MCV),Sixteen of the patients(66.7%) were aged <12 months,The suspicious index case of a girl aged 34 months was not vaccinated with MCV1 and got measles after a trip to Philippines,and molecular genotype was revealed as B3,Measles outbreaks in the community such as a restaurant were followed by this one imported case,According to analysis of 18 patients admitted in isolation ward,the median level of C-reactive protein(CRP) was 0.38 mg/d L and that of lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) was 1 200 IU/L,All of the 18 patients had LDH levels above the normal range,Age correlated with CRP(ρ = 0.528,P = 0.024) and LDH(ρ = 0.501,P = 0.034),The duration of fever was correlated with the duration of fever before rash(ρ = 0.898,P < 0.01),The duration of hospitalization was correlated with CRP(ρ = 0.586,P = 0.011),The white blood cell counts were correlated with the levels of LDH(ρ = 0.505,P = 0.033),aspartate aminotransferase(ρ = 0.507,P = 0.032),and alanine aminotransferase(ρ = 0.481,P = 0.043),Conclusions: Early weaning of maternally derived measles antibodies therefore vaccination of MCV1 at a young age from 9 months to 12 months should be considered in situations of early exposure,Furthermore there is a call for consideration of scheduling an earlier age for the first dose of MMR vaccine in Europe,It is necessary for Korea to investigat

Process control factors for continuous microbial perchlorate reduction in the presence of zero-valent iron

Process control parameters influencing microbial perchlorate reduction via a flow-through zero-valent iron （ZVI） column reactor were investigated in order to optimize perchlorate removal from water. Mixed perchlorate reducers were obtained from a wastewater treatment plant and inoculated into the reactor without further acclimation. Examined parameters included hydraulic residence time （HRT）, pH, nutrients requirement, and perchlorate reduction kinetics. The minimum HRT for the system was concluded to be 8 hr. The removal efficiency of 10 mg. L-1 influent perchlorate concentration was reduced by 20%-80% without control to the neutral pH （HRT = 8 hr）. Therefore pH was determined to be an important parameter for microbial perchlorate reduction. Furthermore, a viable alternative to pH buffer was discussed. The microbial perchlorate reduction followed the first order kinetics, with a rate constant （K） of 0.761 hr-1. The results from this study will contribute to the implementation of a safe, cost effective, and efficient system for perchlorate reduction to below regulated levels.
