Hip External Rotator Strength and Compensatory Movement in Three Different Positions

Measuring intrinsic hip external rotator strength (ER) without compensatory pelvic motion and activation of the sartorius is important for preventing or rehabilitating lower extremity injuries. However, the optimal method for measuring intrinsic hip ER muscle strength while minimizing compensatory pelvic motions and activation of the sartorius is unclear. The purpose of this study is to compare measurements of hip ER strength, compensatory pelvic motion, and sartorius activation in the sitting, prone, and sidelying positions. Thirty-one healthy subjects (16 males and 15 females) were recruited for this study. Hip ER strength, pelvic kinematics, and sartorius muscle activation were measured during maximal isometric contraction of the hip ER in the sitting, prone, and sidelying positions. Hip ER strength was measured using a load-cell-type strength-measurement sensor. Pelvic kinematics was measured using an electromagnetic motion-tracking sensor. Electromyography was used to measure sartorius muscle activity. Data were analyzed using one-way repeated-measures analysis of variance. The result showed that hip ER strength and sartorius muscle activation were significantly lower in the sidelying compared with the sitting and prone positions (p < 0.01). Pelvic anteroposterior tilting was significantly greater in the sitting compared with the prone and sidelying positions (p < 0.01). Pelvic rotation differed significantly among positions (p < 0.01). Pelvic lateral tilting was significantly greater in the prone compared with the sitting position (p < 0.017). Compensatory pelvic motion and sartorius muscle activation were lower when hip ER strength measurements were made in the sidelying position. Therefore, the sidelying position is effective for measuring selective intrinsic hip ER strength.

Treatment of Dyeing Wastewater by Using Positive Pulsed Corona Discharge to Water Surface

This study characterizes the total As concentration and the As bioaccessibility with the 5-step sequential extraction and the in vitro bioaccessibility test using three soil samples from a former smelter site, and discusses the chemical speciation obtained by the sequential extraction and the soil properties that influence the bioaccessibility. Results from the 5-step sequential extraction showed that 99.2, 94.8, 96.2% of the total As concentration in the soil A, B, and C, respectively, hosted in the residual form （i.e., fraction 5）. Interestingly, some portion of the As in the fraction 5 was not expected to contribute to bioavailability nor to be bioacceessible. The bioaccessible As in the soil B （11.9%） was higher than that in the soil A （0.64%） and the soil B （2.02%）. The in vitro bioaccessibility test was conducted aging with the residual form using the organic matter-specific （i.e., HClO 4 ） and the mineral-specific extractant （i.e., HF） to determine the bioaccessibil- ity of the residual form. The results showed that the As associated with organic matter was more bioaccessible than the As associated with silicate minerals. In addition, the residual form with higher humic and fulvic acids contents showed greater bioaccessibility of the refractory organic matter in soil. This study indicates that the composition of the residual organic matter may be important when estimating the bioaccessibility of As.

This study investigated the treatment of textile-dyeing wastewater by using an electrical discharge technique （positive pulsed corona discharge）. The high-voltage electrode was placed above the surface Of the wastewater while the ground electrode was submerged in the wastewater. The electrical discharge starting at the tip of the high voltage electrode propagated toward the surface of the wastewater, producing various oxidative radicals and ozone. Oxygen was used as the working gas instead of air to prevent nitrogen oxides from forming. The simulated wastewater was made up with amaranth, which is a kind of azo dye. The results obtained showed that the chromaticity of the wastewater was almost completely removed within an hour. The ultraviolet/visible spectra of the wastewater treated by the electrical discharge revealed that the total hydrocarbon level also decreased significantly.

为了研究大林姬鼠两亚种(韩国的指名亚种及中国东北和内蒙古地区的东北亚种)线粒体DNA的变异程度并确定朝鲜亚种的分类地位,我们分别将来自韩国和中国东北长白山地区的两亚种的线粒体DNA的细胞色素b基因和控制区进行了测序分析。我们将测序所得到细胞色素b基因序列与来自基因库的大林姬鼠5个亚种的相应的单倍型进行了分析,结果显示大林姬鼠可分为4个类群[类群1:韩国大林姬鼠指名亚种;类群2:中国长白山和内蒙古地区的东北亚种、俄罗斯外加贝尔的majuculus亚种;类群3:中国长春的东北亚种、俄罗斯Primorye(俄罗斯远东地区)rufulus亚种、俄罗斯库页岛(俄罗斯远东地区)和日本北海道地区的giliacus亚种;类群4:中国黑龙江海林地区的东北亚种]。线粒体的控制区序列分析显示韩国指名亚种也不同于中国东北地区的东北亚种。本研究的类群1,2和3与Serizawaetal.(2002)的研究的K、S和R的分支相对应。这表明韩国指名亚种(类群1和分支K)的线粒体DNA与其他类群不同。另外,我们还发现在细胞色素b基因构建的系统树中,东北亚种可以与类群2(分支S)及类群3(分支R的不同亚种聚合在一起。我们认为线粒体DNA的母性遗传与两个相邻亚种的个体之间的种内杂交造成了基于细胞色素b序列对东北亚种的聚类分析结果与基于形态学特征的分类结果的不一致。因此,我们提出对这些显示出核苷酸序列多样性的东北亚种不能只用细胞色素b的数据进行亚种分类,还应该结合形态学和核DNA特征进行进一步分析。最后,我们还发现韩国的指名亚种的细胞色素b序列在平均距离16.93%的基础上不同于来自基因库的***。Jones and Johnson(1965)指出了韩国的大林姬鼠在形态上的区别,所以我们认为韩国的大林姬鼠指名亚种***是一种具有形态和遗传特异性的地方亚种。

Dear Editor,Somatic cells can be reprogrammed into pluripotent stem cells,called induced pluripotent stem cells(iPSCs),by defined transcription factors(Takahashi et al.,2006).The reprogramming of somatic cells may be a continuous stochastic process in which nearly all somatic donor cells have the ability to give rise to iPSCs with continuous passaging and the expression of defined factors(Hanna et al.,2009).However,the reprogramming process can be divided into discrete stages,including the generation of dedifferentiated pre-pluripotent cells followed by authentic pluripotent cells(Silva et al.,2009).

Sojucktang (SJT) has long been used for the treatment of endometrial diseases in Korea. However, the mechanisms responsible for the SJT-induced apoptosis in endometrial cancer cells remain unclear. In the present study, SJT was demonstrated to show cytotoxic effect and induce apoptotic cell death via mitochondrial regulation in KLE endometrial cancer cells. Linderae Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix, Zedoariae Rhizoma, Trogopterorum Faeces and Agelicae Gigantis Radix were found to be the potent constituent herbs of SJT to significantly decrease the viability of KLE cells by a tetra zolium salt (XTT) assay. Apoptotic bodies were observed in SJT-treated KLE cells by 4′-6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) and TdT-mediated-dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay. SJT also increased sub-G1 DNA contents of the cell cycle undergoing apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, it was observed that SJT activated caspase-3 and cleaved poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), and decreased mitochondrial membrane potential in a dose-dependent manner. Taken together, this study shows that SJT exerts anti-tumor activity against KLE endometrial cancer cells via mitochondrial dependent apoptosis induction.
