Chemical and mechanical properties of stainless, environment-friendly, and nonflammable Mg alloys (SEN alloys): A review

This review article provides overall understanding of stainless,environment-friendly,and nonflammable Mg alloys(SEN alloys)recently developed at the Korea Institute of Materials *** alloys are produced by adding small amounts of Ca and Y(each<1 wt%)into commercial Mg–Al based alloys,resulting in exceptional ignition and corrosion resistances and impressive mechanical *** main advantages of SEN alloys are as follows.(1)A dense multi-oxide layer of SEN alloys comprising MgO,CaO,and Y_(2)O_(3) impedes the outward dispersion of Mg vapor and the inward penetration of O_(2) during oxidation,thereby enhancing the oxidation and ignition resistances.(2)The presence of Ca-and Y-based second-phase particles in SEN alloys can enhance their corrosion resistance because Ca-containing particles prevent the spread of corrosion,and the replacement of Al-containing particles with less noble ones containing Y(e.g.,Al–Mn–Y or Al–Y particles)retards corrosion.(3)The addition of minor amounts of Ca and Y renders excellent mechanical properties due to improved strengthening *** enhanced properties are attributed to more pronounced dynamic recrystallization and grain refining behaviors caused by the second-phase particles during extrusion.(4)Despite the presence of various types of second-phase particles,the fatigue properties of SEN9 alloys are similar to those of commercial AZ91 alloys.(5)Simultaneous introduction of Ca and Y suppresses the formation of Mg17Al12 discontinuous precipitates during aging,leading to the enhanced elongation of aged SEN alloys.(6)Adding mischmetal into the SEN9 alloy leads to a six-fold enhancement in ***,the studies conducted on SEN alloys demonstrate their excellent ignition and corrosion resistances and mechanical properties,which broaden the industrial applications of Mg alloys by addressing their inherent weaknesses.

Production of Multi-Features Driven Nationwide Vegetation Physiognomic Map and Comparison to MODIS Land Cover Type Product

Irrespective of several attempts to land use/cover mapping at local, regional, or global scales, mapping of vegetation physiognomic types is limited and challenging. The main objective of the research is to produce an accurate nationwide vegetation physiognomic map by using automated machine learning approach with the support of reference data. A time-series of the multi-spectral and multi-indices data derived from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) were exploited along with the land-surface slope data. Reliable reference data of the vegetation physiognomic types were prepared by refining the existing vegetation survey data available in the country. The Random Forests based mapping framework adopted in the research showed high performance (Overall accuracy = 0.82, Kappa coefficient = 0.79) using 148 optimum number of features out of 231 featured used. A nationwide vegetation physiognomic map of year 2013 was produced in the research. The resulted map was compared to the existing MODIS Land Cover Type (MCD12Q1) product of year 2013. A huge difference was found between two maps. Validation with the reference data showed that the MCD12Q1 product did not work satisfactorily in Japan. The outcome of the research highlights the possibility of improving the accuracy of the MCD12Q1 product with special focus on reference data.

Background Comparative and comprehensive omics studies have recently been conducted to provide a comprehensive understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying ***,because these huge omics datasets often contain irrelevant information,editing strategies for summarizing and filtering the data are necessary prerequisite steps for identifying biomarkers of male ***,we attempted to integrate omics data from spermatozoa with normal and below-normal fertility from boars and bulls,including transcriptomic,proteomic,and metabolomic *** enrichment analysis was conducted and visualized using g:Profiler,Cytoscape,EnrichmentMap,and AutoAnnotation to determine fertility-related biological functions according to *** In particular,gamete production and protein biogenesis-associated pathways were enriched in bull spermatozoa with below-normal fertility,whereas mitochondrial-associated metabolic pathways were enriched in boar spermatozoa with normal *** results indicate that below-normal fertility may be determined by aberrant regulation of protein synthesis during spermatogenesis,and the modulation of reactive oxygen species generation to maintain capacitation and the acrosome reaction governs boar sperm *** Overall,this approach demonstrated that distinct molecular pathways drive sperm fertility in mammals in a species-dependent ***,we anticipate that searching for species-specific signaling pathways may aid in the discovery of fertility-related biomarkers within large omics datasets.

Arterial stiffness expressed as brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity and gait assessment independent of lower extremity strength:a cross-sectional study in the older men population

Surface-roughened current collectors for anode-free all-solid-state batteries

Anode-free all-solid-state batteries(AFASSBs), composed of a fully lithiated cathode and a bare current collector(CC) that eliminates excess lithium, can maximize the energy density(because of a compact cell configuration) and improve the safety of solid-state systems. Although significant progress has been made by modifying CCs in liquid-based anode-free batteries, the role of CCs and the mechanism of Li formation on CCs in AFASSBs are still unexplored. Here, we systematically investigate the effect of the surface roughness of the CCs on the Li plating/stripping behavior in AFASSBs. The results show that the moderately roughened CC substantially improves the Coulombic efficiency and cycle stability of AFASSBs owing to the increased contact points between the solid electrolyte and the roughened CC. In contrast, the excessively roughened CC deteriorates the performance owing to the contact ***, an ex situ interface analysis reveals that the roughened surface of the CC could suppress the interfacial degradation during the Li ion extraction from a sulfide solid electrolyte to a CC. This provides an indication to the origin that hinders the electrochemical performance of AFASSBs. These findings show the potential for the application of surface-engineered CCs in AFASSBs and provide guidelines for designing advanced CCs.

AIM:To explore the usage of choroidal thickness measured by swept-source optical coherence tomography(SS-OCT)to detect myopic macular degeneration(MMD)in high myopic ***:Participants with bilateral high myopia(≤−6 diopters)were recruited from a subset of the Guangzhou Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center-Brien Holden Vision Institute High Myopia Cohort ***-OCT was performed to determine the choroidal thickness,and myopic maculopathy was graded by the International Meta-Analysis for Pathologic Myopia(META-PM)Classiﬁ*** of MMD was defined as META-PM category 2 or ***:A total of 568 right eyes were included for *** with MMD(n=106,18.7%)were found to have older age,longer axial lengths(AL),higher myopic spherical equivalents(SE),and reduced choroidal thickness in each Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study(ETDRS)grid sector(P<0.001).The area under the receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curves(AUC)for subfoveal choroidal thickness(0.907)was greater than that of the model,including age,AL,and SE at 0.6249,0.8208,and 0.8205,*** choroidal thickness of the inner and outer nasal sectors was the most accurate indicator of MMD(AUC of 0.928 and 0.923,respectively).An outer nasal sector choroidal thickness of less than 74μm demonstrated the highest odds of predicting MMD(OR=33.8).CONCLUSION:Choroidal thickness detects the presence of MMD with high agreement,particularly of the inner and outer nasal sectors of the posterior pole,which appears to be a biometric parameter more precise than age,AL,or SE.

Robust and Reusable Fuzzy Extractors from Non-Uniform Learning with Errors Problem

Afuzzy extractor can extract an almost uniformrandom string from a noisy source with enough entropy such as biometric *** reproduce an identical key from repeated readings of biometric data,the fuzzy extractor generates a helper data and a random string from biometric data and uses the helper data to reproduce the random string from the second *** 2013,Fuller et *** a computational fuzzy extractor based on the learning with errors *** construction,however,can tolerate a sub-linear fraction of errors and has an inefficient decoding algorithm,which causes the reproducing time to increase *** 2016,Canetti et *** a fuzzy extractor with inputs from low-entropy distributions based on a strong primitive,which is called digital ***,their construction necessitates an excessive amount of storage space for the helper data,which is stored in authentication *** on these observations,we propose a new efficient computational fuzzy extractorwith small size of helper *** scheme supports reusability and robustness,which are security notions that must be satisfied in order to use a fuzzy extractor as a secure authentication method in real ***,it conceals no information about the biometric data and thanks to the new decoding algorithm can tolerate linear *** on the non-uniform learning with errors problem,we present a formal security proof for the proposed fuzzy ***,we analyze the performance of our fuzzy extractor scheme and provide parameter sets that meet the security *** a result of our implementation and analysis,we show that our scheme outperforms previous fuzzy extractor schemes in terms of the efficiency of the generation and reproduction algorithms,as well as the size of helper data.

Effects of surface roughness on bending properties of rolled AZ31 alloy

This study investigated the effects of mechanical-polishing-induced surface roughness and the direction of polishing lines on the bending properties of a rolled AZ31 *** this end,three-point bending tests were performed on one sample without polishing lines(SS sample)and two samples with polishing lines—one in which the polishing lines were parallel to the rolling direction(RS-RD sample)and the other in which they were parallel to the transverse direction(RS-TD sample).In all three samples,macrocracks were formed in the width direction on the outer surface,where tensile stress was predominantly generated in the longitudinal ***,the macrocracks formed in the SS sample were curved because of the merging of uniformly formed fine microcracks,whereas those formed in the RS-TD sample were linear owing to the formation of relatively coarse microcracks along the polishing *** bendability of the samples was in the order of SS>RS-RD>RS-TD,and their limiting bending depths were 4.8,4.6,and 4.4 mm,*** the presence of mechanical-polishing-induced surface roughness,polishing lines perpendicular to the direction of the major stress(i.e.,tensile stress along the longitudinal direction)resulted in a greater degree of stress concentration on the outer surface of the bending *** higher stress concentration promoted the formation of undesirable{10–11}contraction and{10–11}–{10–12}double twins—which typically act as crack initiation sites—and thereby facilitated crack generation and ***,the surface roughness caused premature fracture during bending deformation,which,in turn,caused deterioration of the bendability of the rolled Mg alloy.

Bending properties of extruded AZ91–0.9Ca–0.6Y alloy and their improvement through precompression and annealing

In this study,an extruded Mg–9Al–1Zn–0.3Mn–0.9Ca–0.6Y(AZXW9110)alloy is subjected to precompression and subsequent annealing(PCA)treatment for improving its bending formability,and the three-point bending properties of the as-extruded material and the precompressed and subsequently annealed(PCAed)material at room temperature are *** bending,microcracks formed in undissolved Al2Ca,Al2Y,and Al8Mn4Y particles propagate along the grain boundaries or twin boundaries and consequently form a macrocrack in the tension zones of the bending samples of both the ***,the bending formability of the PCAed material is 75%higher than that of the as-extruded material owing to the promoted twinning and slip behaviors in the *** as-extruded material has a strong normal direction(ND)texture and a weak transverse direction(TD)texture,and the ND-and TD-oriented grains are unfavorable for both{10–12}twinning and basal slip in the tension zone of the bending sample of this material,which eventually results in its low bending *** PCAed material has a strong extrusion direction(ED)texture,weak TD texture,and spread ND *** bending,{10–12}twins are fully formed in the ED-oriented grains,and this{10–12}twinning effectively accommodates the plastic strain in the tension *** addition,the activation of basal slip in the ND-oriented grains of the PCAed material is promoted owing to the spread ND texture of this ***,this material exhibits substantially superior bending formability because of the vigorous{10–12}twinning in its ED-oriented grains and promoted basal slip in its ND-oriented grains.
