Background The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic on breastfeeding women and to identify predictors of maternal mental health and coping.Methods Mothers aged≥18 years with a breast-fed infant≤18 months of age during the COVID-19 pandemic in Beijing,China,completed a questionnaire.Descriptive analysis of lockdown consequences was performed and predictors of these outcomes were examined using stepwise linear regression.Results Of 2233 participants,29.9%,20.0%and 34.7%felt down,lonely,and worried,respectively,during the lockdown;however,85.3%felt able to cope.Poorer maternal mental health was predicted by maternal(younger age,higher education)and infant(older age,lower gestation)characteristics,and social circumstances(husband unemployed or working from home,receiving advice from family,having enough space for the baby,living close to a park or green space).Conversely,better maternal mental health was predicted by higher income,employment requiring higher qualifications,more personal space at home,shopping or walking>once/week and lack of impact of COVID-19 on job or income.Mothers with higher education,more bedrooms,fair division of household chores and attending an online mother and baby group>once/week reported better coping.Conclusion The findings highlight maternal characteristics and circumstances that predict poorer mental health and reduced coping which could be used to target interventions in any future public health emergencies requiring social restrictions.

The root system architecture(RSA) of a crop has a profound effect on the uptake of nutrients and consequently the potential yield. However, little is known about the genetic basis of RSA and resource adaptive responses in wheat(Triticum aestivum L.). Here, a high-throughput germination paper-based plant phenotyping system was used to identify seedling traits in a wheat doubled haploid mapping population, Savannah×Rialto. Significant genotypic and nitrate-N treatment variation was found across the population for seedling traits with distinct trait grouping for root size-related traits and root distribution-related traits. Quantitative trait locus(QTL) analysis identified a total of 59 seedling trait QTLs. Across two nitrate treatments, 27 root QTLs were specific to the nitrate treatment. Transcriptomic analyses for one of the QTLs on chromosome 2 D, which was found under low nitrate conditions, revealed gene enrichment in N-related biological processes and 28 differentially expressed genes with possible involvement in a root angle response. Together, these findings provide genetic insight into root system architecture and plant adaptive responses to nitrate, as well as targets that could help improve N capture in wheat.

Purpose The Elevation Training Mask(ETM)has been assessed for its impact on exercise performance using acute and training protocols.Although the ETM is widely available to consumers,little research exists for validation of the ETM mask settings.Therefore,the purpose of this study was to compare physiological responses during exercise for the ETM mask settings against moderate hypobaric hypoxia.Methods Nine participants living at moderate altitude(1600-1650 m)rested(10 min)and cycled in hypobaric hypoxia simulating 2743 m(ALT),in hypobaric hypoxia simulating 1829 m with the ETM set to 914 m(ALT+ETM),and with the ETM set to 2743 m(ETM)in a randomized order.Participants cycled for 20 min at 60%VO_(2max)as determined by a maximal exertion test(VO_(2max))at baseline altitude.Oxygen consumption was measured throughout each test.Results There were no differences between conditions at rest.Repeated measures ANOVA showed the ALT condition elicited significantly greater VO_(2) compared to the ETM condition and 60%VO_(2max)at baseline altitude(P<0.05).Conclusion When cycling at a matched workload,the exercising VO_(2) was higher in the ALT condition than at the ETM mask setting of 2743 m and exercising VO2 during the ETM condition was similar to 60%VO_(2max)at baseline altitude.The results of this study indicate that the ETM did not produce additional metabolic stress compared to hypobaric hypoxia during steady-state exercise in moderate-altitude living individuals.
