RESIDENTIAL DRAIN WATER HEAT RECOVERY SYSTEMS: MODELING, ANALYSIS, AND IMPLEMENTATION

This paper describes the design and environmental improvements that can be achieved using drain water heat recovery systems(DWHR)to reduce the energy consumption associated with residential *** systems transfer heat from hot drain water to the shower’s incoming cold water stream,thus reducing the demand on the hot water *** are various DWHR systems available that differ in heat exchanger type,cost,and *** article focuses on designing a flat plate and gravity fed heat exchangers for a range of residential showering *** is useful since there currently is no peer-reviewed published data on the effectiveness of DWHR,nor is there published research considering the emissions reductions that can be achieved with realistic DWHR *** governing equations for heat exchangers are used to model empirical data and to derive implementation recommendations for DWHR *** model is validated using a prototype flat plate heat exchanger and test stand under varying flow rates and temperatures.A Monte Carlo simulation of the results showed that DWHR could save an average$74 a year for homes with natural gas water heaters and$160 a year for homes with electric water *** corresponds to 0.3 metric tons and 1.5 metric tons of CO_(2) offset per home per year for natural gas and electric water heaters,*** results are compiled and organized into a software program that allows consumers to input their household showering habits and location to get an estimate of their CO_(2),energy,and cost savings to determine if they should install a DWHR system.

A novel bisphosphine ligated Ag60 nanocluster,[{Cl@Ag12}@Ag48(dppm)12], has been dis-covered and characterized by X-ray crystallography. It consists of a central chloride located inside an icosahedral silver core layer, which is further encased by a second shell of 48 silver atoms/ions, which are capped with 12 bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm) ligands. Due to lack of sufficient material the cluster could not be further characterized by other methods. DFT calculations were carried out on the cation [{Cl@Ag12}@Ag48(dppm)12]+ to determine if it corresponds to a superatom with a core count of n=58. The DFT optimized structure is in agreement with X-ray ndings, but the low value of the HOMO-LUMO gap does not support superatom stability.

Mercury levels in human population from a mining district in Western Colombia

A biomonitoring study was carried out to examine the adverse impacts of total mercury in the blood（HgB）, urine（Hg U） and human scalp hair（HgH） on the residents of a mining district in Colombia. Representative biological samples（scalp hair, urine and blood） were collected from volunteered participants（n = 63） to estimate the exposure levels of THg using a Direct mercury analyzer. The geometric mean of THg concentrations in the hair,urine and blood of males were 15.98 μg/g, 23.89 μg/L and 11.29 μg/L respectively, whereas the females presented values of 8.55 μg/g, 5.37 μg/L and 8.80 μg/L. Chronic urinary Hg（HgU）levels observed in male workers（32.53 μg/L） are attributed to their long termed exposures to inorganic and metallic mercury from gold panning activities. On an average, the levels of THg are increasing from blood（10.05 μg/L） to hair（12.27 μg/g） to urine（14.63 μg/L）.Significant positive correlation was found between hair and blood urinary levels in both male and female individuals. Thus the present biomonitoring investigation to evaluate the Hg levels and associated health issues would positively form a framework for further developmental plans and policies in building an ecofriendly ecosystem.
