The sociolinguistic account of the early development of the mother tongue presented by Professor Halliday is based on his intensive study of the language of one particular child, Nigel, for the period from nine- to eighteen months.

One in three Americans is at risk for developing chronic kidney disease （CKD） and end-stage renal disease （eSRD）, leading to the need for dialysis or a kidney transplant. Small-molecule drugs have been proposed as therapies to manage kidney diseases, but high dosages are often required to achieve therapeutic efficacy, generating off-target side effects, some of which are lethal. To address these limitations, we developed a novel kidney-targeting multimodal micelle （KM） system for drug delivery applications. SpecificaU~ we incorporated the kidney-targeting peptide （Lysine-Lysine-Glutamic acid-Glutamic acid-Glutamic acid）3-Lysine）（（KKeee）3K） into micelles. This peptide binds to megalin, a multi-ligand cell surface receptor present on renal tubule cells. When incubated with human kidney proximal tubule cells, KMs were found to be biocompatible in vitro. In vivo, KMs showed higher accumulation in the kidneys as compared to a non-targeted （NT） control upon intravenous injection in wild-type C57BL/6J mice. Histological evaluation showed no signs of tissue damage, while blood urea nitrogen （BUN） and creatinine levels were within normal ranges, validating the preservation of kidney health upon micelle administration. To our knowledge, this is the first utilization of （KKeee）BK in a nanoparticle formulation, and our study offers strong evidence that this novel nanoparticle platform can be used as a candidate drug delivery carrier to direct therapeutics to diseased tissue in CKD.

Well-aggregated soil has been shown to improve soil infiltration and reduce runoff and soil erosion, making well-aggregated soil important for productive, sustainable agriculture. One factor that may influence near-surface soil aggregate stability is fertilizer application. Rapid dissolution of fertilizers, which are mostly salts, can potentially disperse clays and destabilize aggregates. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential effect of various fertilizer-phosphorus (P) and -nitrogen (N) sources [i.e., triple superphosphate (TSP), monoammonium phosphate (MAP), chemically precipitated struvite (CPST), electrochemically precipitated struvite (eCST), environmentally smart nitrogen (eSN)] and soil depth on water-stable aggregates (WSA) in furrow-irrigated rice on a silt-loam soil (Typic Albaqualf). Total WSA (TWSA) concentration was unaffected (P > 0.05) by fertilizer treatment or soil depth, while WSA concentration was numerically largest (P ∙g-1), which did not differ from CPST, eCST, and eSN in the 0 - 5 cm depth or the unamended control in the 0 - 5 and 5 - 10 cm depths, and was at least 1.7 times larger than eSN in the 5 - 10 cm depth (0.03 g∙g-1). Results indicated that WSA concentration among non-struvite fertilizer-P sources was generally similar to that from the struvite fertilizer materials. Principal component analysis determined that 32% of the variation of TWSA was mainly explained by changes in soil bulk density, pH, and electrical conductivity. Long-term, continual annual application of fertilizer-P and N could negatively impact soil aggregate stability, soil structure, and potentially erosion.

A method based on regression modeling was developed to discern the contribution of component chemicals to the toxicity of highly complex, environmentally realistic mixtures of disinfection byproducts（DBPs）. Chemical disinfection of drinking water forms DBP *** of concerns about possible reproductive and developmental toxicity, a whole mixture（WM） of DBPs produced by chlorination of a water concentrate was administered as drinking water to Sprague–Dawley（S–D） rats in a multigenerational study. Age of puberty acquisition,i.e., preputial separation（PPS） and vaginal opening（VO）, was examined in male and female offspring, respectively. When compared to controls, a slight, but statistically significant delay in puberty acquisition was observed in females but not in males. WM-induced differences in the age at puberty acquisition were compared to those reported in S–D rats administered either a defined mixture（DM） of nine regulated DBPs or individual DBPs. Regression models were developed using individual animal data on age at PPS or VO from the DM study. Puberty acquisition data reported in the WM and individual DBP studies were then compared with the DM models. The delay in puberty acquisition observed in the WM-treated female rats could not be distinguished from delays predicted by the DM regression model, suggesting that the nine regulated DBPs in the DM might account for much of the delay observed in the WM. This method is applicable to mixtures of other types of chemicals and other endpoints.

This study investigated the in vitro fermentation profiles of human milk oligosaccharides(HMOs) by different dominating infant microbiota(***-, ***-and Bacteroides-dominated inocula). We sought to evaluate fecal microbiota composition of healthy infant donors in Guangzhou(including breast-feeding and formula-feeding). Further, we were expected to study in vitro fermentation outcomes of six commercial HMOs [i.e., 2 -fucosyllactose(2 -FL), 3-fucosyllactose(3-FL), 3 -sialyllactose(3 -SL), 6 -sialyllactose(6 -SL), lacto-Ntetraose(LNT) and lacto-N-neotetraose(LNnT)], fructo-oligosaccharide(FOS) and galacto-oligosaccharides(GOS) by using individual infant fecal inocula. Methods Nineteen healthy donors were selected at Guangzhou, China. Nine infants were qualified and enrolled in the experiment. each 50 mg of carbohydrate sample was equivalently weighted into anaerobic tubes and fermented with fecal slurry at 37 °C water bath with gentle shaking for various time periods. Total gas production of each tube was measured by inserting the needle through rubber stopper with a graduated syringe. The concentration of short chain fatty acids(SCFAs) was determined by gas chromatography, and the concentration of organic acids(OAs) was determined by high performance liquid chromatography. DNA extraction from the fermented products was performed using the OMeGA Soil DNA Kit(M5635-02)(Omega Bio-Tek, Norcross, GA, USA), following the manufacturer s instruction. The nearly full-length bacterial 16 S rRNA from each purified DNA sample was performed to investigate microbiota composition. Results Fecal microbiota composition and microbiota classification It was noteworthy that three distinct clusters of infant gut microbiota were shown among nineteen infants. Three distinct groups were characterized by the bacteria abundance, denoted as B. longum-, B. breve-and Bacteroides-dominated inocula. In this report, we describe morphological characteristics of a dicephalic Steppes Ratsnake （elaphe dione） collected from the wild in 2011 in South Korea. The specimen has two heads and two long necks. Unlike normal individuals, the dicephalic snake has divided ventral scales under the necks of the bifurcated columns. The snout- vent length （SVL） and overall total length of the individual are shorter than those of normal snakes of the same age. Nevertheless, the counts of nine different scale types that are often used for classification are all within the ranges of normal individuals. As far as we know, this is the first detailed morphological description of a dicephalic e. dione in the scientific literature.
