Introd.ction: Vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) plays an essential role in lowering cesarean rates. d.spite end.rsement, trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC) attempt rates remain low, in part d.e to fear of lawsuits. Zavanelli maneuver is a last resort proced.re in the management of should.r d.stocia. We d.scuss a case of a woman d.termined.to have a vaginal birth after her prior birth was complicated.by should.r d.stocia requiring a Zavanelli maneuver. Her physicians were reluctant to allow her a TOLAC given her prior obstetric history. Case: A 34-year-old.para 1 with prior cesarean d.livery d.e to should.r d.stocia that required.Zavanelli maneuver presents d.termined.to pursue VBAC in her current pregnancy. She consid.red.her d.livery route options and.ad.ressed.her mod.fiable risk factors. She consulted.with multiple perinatologists who agreed.that a TOLAC was reasonable, however she had.to travel more than 70 miles (from Pennsylvania to New Jersey) to find.an obstetrical practice and.hospital willing to consid.r VBAC. She transferred.care and.the remaind.r of her prenatal course was uncomplicated. She went into labor at 41 weeks and.had.a successful VBAC without complication. In a thank you letter to her obstetrician, she d.scribed.her birth experience as euphoric. Conclusion: This case illustrates how a woman’s choice of d.livery route may be impacted.by fear of litigation. Local provid.rs focused.on her prior d.livery instead.of her overall improved.risk profile. d.livery route d.cisions should.be based.on a thorough evaluation of all risk factors and.ind.vid.alized.to meet the reprod.ctive goals of each woman. .

OMEGA is a system for cultivating microalgae using wastewater contained.in floating photobioreactors (PBRs) d.ployed.in marine environments and.thereby eliminating competition with agriculture for water, fertilizer, and.land. The offshore placement in protected.bays near coastal cities co-locates OMEGA with wastewater outfalls and.sources of CO2-rich flue gas on shore. To evaluate the feasibility of OMEGA, microalgae were grown on second.ry-treated.wastewater supplemented.with simulated.flue gas (8.5% CO2 V/V) in a 110-liter prototype system tested.using a seawater tank. The flow-through system consisted.of tubular PBRs mad. of transparent linear low-d.nsity polyethylene, a gas exchange and.harvesting column (GEHC), two pumps, and.an instrumentation and.control (I&C) system. The PBRs contained.regularly spaced.swirl vanes to create helical flow and.mixing for the circulating culture. About 5% of the culture volume was continuously d.verted.through the GEHC to manage d.ssolved.oxygen concentrations, provid. supplemental CO2, harvest microalgae from a settling chamber, and.ad. fresh wastewater to replenish nutrients. The I&C system controlled.CO2 injection and.record.d.d.ssolved.oxygen levels, totalized.CO2 flow, temperature, circulation rates, photosynthetic active rad.ation (PAR), and.the photosynthetic efficiency as d.termined.by fast repetition rate fluorometry. In two experimental trials, totaling 23 d.ys in April and.May 2012, microalgae prod.ctivity averaged.14.1 ± 1.3 grams of d.y biomass per square meter of PBR surface area per d.y (n = 16), supplemental CO2 was converted.to biomass with >50% efficiency, and.>90% of the ammonia-nitrogen was recovered.from second.ry effluent. If OMEGA can be optimized.for energy efficiency and.scaled.up economically, it has the potential to contribute significantly to biofuels prod.ction and.wastewater treatment.

The conversion of biomass into sugar platform compound. is very important for the biorefinery ind.stry. Pretreatment is essential to the biomass of the sugar platform, however, the lignin obtained.by pretreatment, as a key part of lignocellulose, generally has a passive effect on the enzymatic hyd.olysis of cellulose into sugars. In this stud., p-TsOH(p-toluenesulfonic acid., d.S(d.ep eutectic solvent) and.CAOSA(cooking with active oxygen and.solid.alkali) pretreatment ways were used.to fraction lignin from bamboo biomass. After CAOSA treatment, the hyd.olysis efficiency of the pulp was 95.57%. Moreover, the effect of d.fferent treatment method. on lignin properties was stud.ed.and.the promotion effect of lignin was investigated.by ad.ing it to the cellulose enzymatic hyd.olysis system. In this work, the results showed.that CAOSA-extracted.lignin with lower ?(1.31–1.25) had.a better ad.orption effect on the enzyme protein. p-TsOH-extracted.lignin with a larger S/G ratio enhanced.the inhibition of enzymatic hyd.olysis. In ad.ition, the presence of-COOHs in lignin could.red.ce its inhibitory effect on cellulose saccharification.
