Biodiversity,large trees,and environmental c.nditions suc. as c.imate and soil have important effec.s on forest c.rbon ***,rec.nt studies in temperate forests suggest that the relative importanc. of these fac.ors depends on tree myc.rrhizal assoc.ations,whereby large-tree effec.s may be driven by ec.omyc.rrhizal(EM)trees,diversity effec.s may be driven by arbusc.lar myc.rrhizal(AM)trees,and environment effec.s may depend on differential c.imate and soil preferenc.s of AM and EM *** test this hypothesis,we used forest-inventory data c.nsisting of over 80,000 trees from 631 temperate-forest plots(30 m×30 m)ac.oss Northeast c.ina to examine how biodiversity(spec.es diversity and ec.logic.l uniqueness),large trees(top 1%of tree diameters),and environmental fac.ors(c.imate and soil nutrients)differently regulate aboveground c.rbon stoc.s of AM trees,EM trees,and AM and EM trees c.mbined(*** aboveground c.rbon stoc.).We found that large trees had a positive effec. on both AM and EM tree c.rbon ***,biodiversity and environmental fac.ors had opposite effec.s on AM *** tree c.rbon ***,the two c.mponents of biodiversity had positive effec.s on AM tree c.rbon stoc.s,but negative effec.s on EM tree c.rbon *** heterogeneity(mean annual temperature and soil nutrients)also exhibited c.ntrasting effec.s on AM and EM tree c.rbon ***,for the total c.rbon stoc.,the positive large-tree effec. far surpasses the diversity and environment *** is mainly bec.use when integrating AM and EM tree c.rbon stoc. into total c.rbon stoc.,the opposite diversity-effec.(also environment-effec.)on AM *** tree c.rbon stoc. c.unterac.s eac. other while the c.nsistent positive large-tree effec. on AM and EM tree c.rbon stoc. is *** summary,this study emphasized a myc.rrhizal viewpoint to better understand the determinants of overarc.ing aboveground c.rbon profile ac.oss regional forests.
