This article aims to study the efficiency of coupled vertical drains for the treatment of long-lasting compressible clay soils for the road project platform of the ring road of Porto Novo, capital of Benin. The experimental data allowed us to estimate a consolidation of 29% in 9 months, justifying the drainage of the soil. In order to study the efficiency of drainage, a FEM model was proposed simulating different scenarios. These include a drainless road, pavements equipped with vertical drains with meshes of 0.5 m 0.5 m, 1 m 1 m and 1.5 m 1.5 m respectively and horizontal drains. The results expressed in terms of variations in vertical stresses, effective stresses and shear deformations revealed significant variations in pavement performance depending on the mesh size of the vertical drains. The configuration with a mesh of 0.5 m 0.5 m showed the least deformations, thus indicating a reduction in deformations and better stress distribution. However, the other mesh configurations showed variable results, underlining the importance of choosing the right mesh for the specific project conditions.

land-Use change on Soil c and N Stocks in the Humid Savannah Agro-Ecological Zone of Ghana

land-use conversion and unsustainable farming practices are degrading native forest ecosystems of Ghana’s humid savannah agro-ecological zone. This study assessed the impact of land-use change on soil c and N stocks in different land-use systems and soil types. A total of eighty (80) composite soil samples at two depths (0 - 20 cm and 20 - 50 cm) were sampled from five land use types (Forest, Woodland savannah, Grassland, Fallow and cropland) for laboratory analyses. Particle size distribution, bulk density, pH, SOc and TN were determined using standard procedures. Results of the study indicated that c and N stocks were significantly lower in croplands (p compared to other land-use systems. There were significant interactions (p land-use systems, soil types, and soil depth for soil c and N stocks. Acrisol and associated soils had the highest c and N stocks. A strong positive significant correlation (p c and N stocks with an R2 value of 0.85 and 0.93 for the 0 - 20 and 20 - 50 cm depth, respectively. Soil c and N stocks in the study area were estimated to be 34.56 kg/m2 and 4.63 kg/m2 for soil types and 26.89 kg/m2 and 3.39 kg/m2 for land use types, respectively for the 0 to 50 cm soil depth. Our findings indicated that the conversion of native forest to arable land has significantly reduced soil c and N stocks in the top 50 cm (0.50 m) soil layer by 50.77% and 47.77%, respectively. Therefore, we conclude that land-use change, soil type, and soil depth influenced soil c and N stocks of land-use systems in the humid savannah agro-ecological zone of Ghana.

A class of n-dimensional ODEs with up to n feedbacks from the n’th variable is analysed. The feedbacks are represented by non-specific, bounded, non-negative c1 functions. The main result is the formulation and proof of an easily applicable criterion for existence of a globally stable fixed point of the system. The proof relies on the contraction mapping theorem. Applications of this type of systems are numerous in biology, e.g., models of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and testosterone secretion. Some results important for modelling are: 1) Existence of an attractive trapping region. This is a bounded set with non-negative elements where solutions cannot escape. All solutions are shown to converge to a “minimal” trapping region. 2) At least one fixed point exists. 3) Sufficient criteria for a unique fixed point are formulated. One case where this is fulfilled is when the feedbacks are negative.

Dear editor,Focal nodular hyperplasia(FNH)is the second most common benign hepatic lesion in *** is unknown and it is often diagnosed incidentally in women of childbearing *** disease has minimal risk of malignant degeneration or rupture.1 It is often asymptomatic although it may manifest as abdominal pain or a palpable mass when the diameter exceeds 10 cm.1–3 Despite the disease’s predilection for females,there’s no evidence that female hormones alter the course of FNH;several studies conducted on pregnant patients with FNH showed no modification in tumor size.

Background:Evaluation of advanced fibrosis in patients with hepatitis c virus (HcV) infection is used to facilitate decisions on treatment strategy and to initiate additional screening ***,most studies have predominately caucasian (cau) patients and may not be as relevant for African Americans (AA).Aims:This study specifically addresses the issue of defining minimal *** fibrosis in African Americans (AA) with chronic hepatitis c (cHc) using noninvasive ***:All patients (n =319) seen between 1 January 2008 and 30 June 2013 for whom a FibroSpect II(R) (FSII) assay was performed and had data for calculation of aspartate aminotransferase (AST)platelet ratio index (APRI) and Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) were identified using the medical ***:When liver biopsy score and FSII assay results for the AA patients with cHc were compared,31% of AA had advanced FSII fibrosis scores (F2-F4) despite a biopsy score of *** contrast,10% of cau *** AA false positive rate was 14% for APRI and 34% for *** FSII with either APRI (7% false positive) or FIB-4 (10% false positive) improved the false positive rate in AA to 7% (FSII + APRI) and 10%(FSII + FIB-4) but reduced the sensitivity for significant ***:The FSII assay overestimates fibrosis in AA and should be used with caution since these patients may not have significant *** the APRI or FIB-4 assay is combined with the FSII assay,minimal fibrosis in AA can be defined without subjecting the patients to a subsequent biopsy.
