Background: Postpartum hae.orrhage.is the.le.ding cause.of mate.nal de.ths worldwide. the.majority of which occur in low re.ource.se.tings. Ute.ine.atony is the.commone.t cause.of postpartum hae.orrhage. Ute.ine.balloon tamponade.(UBT) is an e.fe.tive.me.hod of tre.ting re.ractory postpartum hae.orrhage. Aim: Comme.cial UBT de.ice. are.ofte. not affordable.and not re.dily available.in rural se.tings. The.aim of this pape. is to re.ort on thre. case. of postpartum hae.orrhage.succe.sfully manage. with ute.ine.balloon tamponade.using Fole. cathe.e.s. Case.Re.orts: We.re.ort on thre. patie.ts with major obste.ric hae.orrhage.from ute.ine.atony who we.e.succe.sfully manage. with ute.ine.balloon tamponade.using Fole.’s ure.hral cathe.e.. The.first two patie.ts had primary postpartum hae.orrhage.while.the.third patie.t had significant ble.ding during the.surgical e.acuation of the.ute.us for a molar pre.nancy. In e.ch case. ute.ine.ble.ding was re.ractory to pharmacologic ute.otonics. The. all had ute.ine.tamponade.with a Fole. cathe.e. with the.dramatic re.olution of the.r ble.ding. Conclusion: In we.l-se.e.te. patie.ts, ute.ine.balloon tamponade.with Fole. cathe.e. is che.p, arre.ts ble.ding and pre.e.ts clinical de.e.ioration among wome. with re.ractory postpartum hae.orrhage. e.pe.ially in low re.ource.se.tings whe.e.comme.cial balloon tamponade.may not be.available.or affordable.

Background: Globally, the rise in the rate of caesarean section is becoming a public health problem. This study examined the rate, indications and complications of caesarean section at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (FETHA). Subjects and Methods: This was a six-year retrospective study covering January 1st 2012 to December 31st 2017. Patients who met the inclusion criteria were identified from the theatre records and their case notes retrieved from the health information unit of the hospital. Information extracted includes sociodemographic data, indications and types of caesarean section performed and the complications. Data was collected using a structured proforma and entered into a secured personal computer. Data analysis was performed by means of Epi Info version 7. Results are presented in tables, means and simple percentages. Results: During this period, a total of 11,215 deliveries were recorded at FETHA, of these, 3908 were delivered by CS giving a caesarean section rate of 34.8%. The mean age of the study subjects was 29.3 ± 5.03 years. Almost half (49.7%) of the patients were in the 20 - 29 age group. Multiparous women made up 36.0% while nulliparous women were 12.6%. Background: The.application of invasive.obste.ric proce.ure. has an e.d point of re.ucing the.Cae.are.n se.tion rate. The.de.lining rate.of use.of the.e.proce.ure. is one.of the.re.sons for incre.sing Cae.are.n se.tion rate. in our e.vironme.t. Obje.tive. The.aim of the.study was to de.e.mine.the.practice.of ope.ative.vaginal de.ive.ie. among obste.ricians practicing in Nige.ia and to e.aluate.the.re.sons for non-use.of the.e.proce.ure.. Me.hodology: It was a que.tionnaire.base. study. The.que.tionnaire. we.e.administe.e. to practitione.s of Obste.rics in the.various ce.tre. in Nige.ia. Data was collate. and analyze. with e.i-Info statistical software.ve.sion 7.0 (Ce.te. for Dise.se.Control and Pre.e.tion, USA), and conclusions we.e.drawn by me.ns of de.criptive.statistics. Re.ults: A total of 1200 que.tionnaire.we.e.distribute. but 1104 we.e.re.urne. and use. for analysis. This gave.a re.ponse.rate.of 92%. The.age.distribution of the.re.ponde.ts showe. that the.20 - 30 ye.r age.group had the.le.st numbe. of re.ponde.ts 22 (2%) while.41 - 50 age.group had the.highe.t numbe. of re.ponde.ts 486 (4%). The.majority of the.re.ponde.ts we.e.male. 839 (76%). In te.ms of duration of practice. 449 (40.7%) of the.re.ponde.ts had more.than 6 ye.rs duration of practice.while.256 (23.2) had practice. for le.s than 3 ye.rs. Te.tiary ce.tre. had highe.t numbe. of re.ponde.ts 71.8%. The.distribution of the.re.ponde.ts according to the.ge.political zone. in Nige.ia are.South-e.st (57.6%), South-South (19.6%), South We.t (11.4%), North-We.t (4.9%), North-e.st (3.8%), North-Ce.tral (2.7%).
