Anticipating global change impact on natural vegetation,especially in poorly researched systems,requires an understanding of the environmental factors that most strongly influence the organisation of plant communities at different *** environmental relations of plant communities in the Drakensberg mountains of South Africa remain poorly *** study investigated the influence of selected environmental determinants on the dominant species of plant community organisation in this *** order to provide an overview of the influence of the environment on botanical composition and plant diversity,this study,conducted as four discrete exercises,investigated the interplay of altitude,aspect and slope on the abundance of selected species,and to examine the influence of latitude,geological substrate and local topography on species *** diversity showed no pattern of response to investigated environmental *** composition was related to temperature and solarradiation *** altitude sites facing east were distinct for non-graminoid *** and latitude exerted a pronounced effect on species composition,confounded by longitude and precipitation *** substrate,in concert with slope steepness and orientation,influenced composition,restricting the abundance but not distribution of some *** individualistic responses were found for C_3,C_4,and non-graminoid species in relation to altitude,slope and *** and aspect mediate the effects of altitude and hence temperature for some *** study has demonstrated the complexity of drivers influencing species and compositional distribution in the Drakensberg and permits a preliminary consideration of potential changes in the composition and dominance structure of mid-elevation grasslands in response to climate *** dominant grass species were widespread across environmental gradients,occupying currently warm,cool,moist and dry habitats

Fishing for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) with pots and gillnets: A catch comparison study along the southeast coast of Labrador

Gillnets are the primary fishing gear used to catch Atlantic cod(Gadus morhua)in coastal areas of Newfoundland and Labrador but are known to catch non-target species and produce lower quality fish than live-catch *** purpose of this study was to compare the catch efficiency of collapsible cod pots against gillnets near the Gilbert Bay Marine Protected Area(MPA),Labrador,where a reduction in by-catch is *** showed that one cod pot caught half as much Atlantic cod as a gillnet,and pots had a relatively stable catch rate throughout the sampling period,whereas gillnets caught relatively few fish later in the sampling ***,nearly all fish sampled with pots were caught alive undamaged,whereas most gillnet-caught fish experienced damage or *** a conservation measure pot-fishing would enable fishing within close proximity to the Gilbert Bay MPA and the live-release of visually distinguishable Gilbert Bay cod,thereby mitigating against the negative effects of commercial fishing on this protected Atlantic cod population.

Numerical Study on the Influence Mechanism of Inlet Distortion on the Stall Margin in a Transonic Axial Rotor

A numerical study is conducted to investigate the influence of inlet flow condition on tip leakage flow (TLF) and stall margin in a transonic axial rotor.A commercial software package FLUENT,is used in the *** rotor investigated in this paper is ND_TAC rotor,which is the rotor of one-stage transonic compressor in the University of Notre *** varied inlet flow conditions are *** inlet boundary condition with hub distortion provides higher axial velocity for the incoming flow near tip region than that for the clean inflow,while the incoming main flow possesses lower axial velocity near the tip region at tip distortion inlet boundary *** the total pressure ratio curves for the three inlet flow conditions,it is found that the hub dis-torted inlet boundary condition improves the stall margin,while the tip distorted inlet boundary condition dete-riorates compressor *** axial location of interface between tip leakage flow (TLF) and incoming main flow (MF) in the tip gap and the axial momentum ratio of TLF to MF are further *** is demonstrated that the axial momentum balance is the mechanism for interface *** hub distorted inflow could de-crease the axial momentum ratio,suppress the movement of the interface between TLF and MF towards blade leading edge plane and thus enhance compressor stability.

BACKGROUND This is a unique case of a patient who was found to have two extremely rare primary malignancies synchronously,i.e.,an ampullary adenocarcinoma arising from a high-grade dysplastic tubulovillous adenoma of the ampulla of Vater(TVAoA)with a high-grade ileal gastrointestinal stromal tumor(GIST).Based on a literature review and to the best of our knowledge,this is the first report of this *** ampullary tumors are extremely rare,with an incidence of four cases per million population,which is approximately 0.0004%.Distal duodenal polyps are uncommon and have a preponderance of occurring around the ampulla of *** adenoma of the ampulla(AoA)may occur sporadically or with a familial inheritance pattern,as in hereditary genetic polyposis syndrome such as familial adenomatous polyposis syndrome(FAPS).We report a case of a 77-year-old male who was admitted for painless obstructive jaundice with a 40-pound weight loss over a two-month period and who was subsequently diagnosed with two extremely rare primary malignancies,i.e.,an adenocarcinoma of the ampulla arising from a high-grade TVAoA and a high-grade ileal GIST found *** SUMMARY A 77-year-old male was admitted for generalized weakness with an associated weight loss of 40 pounds in the previous two months and was noted to have painless obstructive *** physical examination was benign except for bilateral scleral and palmar *** results were significant for an obstructive pattern on liver *** lipase and carbohydrate antigen-19-9 levels were *** tomography(CT)of the abdomen and pelvis and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography were consistent with a polypoid mass at the level of the common bile duct(CBD)and the ampulla of Vater with CBD *** same lesions were visualized with endoscopic retrograde *** of endoscopic forceps biopsy showed *** of the surgical specimen of the

A convenient method for methane(CH_(4))direct conversion to methanol(CH_(3)OH)is of great significance to use methane-rich resources,especially clathrates and stranded shale gas resources located in remote ***,the activation of CH_(4) and the selectivity to the CH_(3)OH product are challenging due to the extreme stability of CH_(4) and relatively high reactivity of CH_(3)*** state-of-the-art‘methane reforming-methanol synthesis’process adopts a two-step strategy to avoid the further reaction of CH_(3)OH under the harsh conditions required for CH_(4) *** the electrochemical field,researchers are trying to develop conversion pathways under mild *** have found suitable catalysts to activate the C–H bonds in methane with the help of external charge and have designed the electrode reactions to continuously generate certain active oxygen *** active oxygen species attack the activated methane and convert it to CH_(3)OH,with the benefit of avoiding over-oxidation of CH_(3)OH,and thus obtain a high conversion efficiency of CH_(4) to CH_(3)*** mini-review focuses on the advantages and challenges of electrochemical conversion of CH4 to CH_(3)OH,especially the strategies for supplying electro-generated active oxygen species in-situ to react with the activated methane.

Heart failure(HF)is characterized by high symptom burden including,but not limited to fatigue,dyspnea,and *** to 21.5%of HF patients experience significant depressive symptoms,much higher than 7.1%in adults without ***,metabolites,and other inflammatory mechanisms have gained notable attention in recent studies for contributions to symptoms in *** for black adults(B/As)with HF are often influenced by lifestyle factors,which may influence their higher mortality rates;few studies address these *** the links between key elements with diet,inflammation,and symptoms may bring clarity for new dietary strategies in HF clinical *** purpose of this integrative review is to examine the existing literature regarding relationships among physiologic pathways in HF along with physical and emotional symptoms in the context of inflammation,dietary intake,tumor necrosis factor‑alpha(TNF‑a),a biomarker of inflammation,and trimethylamine‑N‑Oxide(TMAO).Based on available evidence,inflammation may be a key link between physical symptoms,diet,depression,TMAO,and TNF‑a in persons with HF and warrants further examination to clarify pathological links to solidify evidence for better guidance with dietary *** literature reviewed in this study demonstrates that more work is needed to examine dietary planning,social support,and differences between men and women in the B/A *** of this literature review call attention to the essential,personalized care needs related to symptom monitoring and dietary planning which is expected to decrease symptom burden in the HF population.

Raman spectroscopy monitors adverse bone sequelae of cancer radiotherapy

Raman spectroscopy provides information on bone chemical composition and structure via widely used metrics including mineral to matrix ratio, mineral crystallinity and carbonate content, collagen cross- linking ratio and depolarization ratios. These metrics are correlated with bone material properties, such as hardness, plasticity and Young＇s modulus. We review application of Raman spectroscopy to two important irradiated animal models： the mouse tibia, a model for damage to cortical bone sites including the rib （breast cancer） and to healthy tissue adjacent to extremity sarcomas, and the rat mandible, a model for radiation damage in head and neck cancer radiotherapy. Longitudinal studies of irradiated mouse tibia demonstrate that radiation-induced matrix abnormalities can persist even 26 weeks post- radiation. Polarized Raman spectroscopy shows formation of more ordered orientation of both mineral and collagen. At 8 weeks post-radiation, irradiated rat hemimandible exhibits transient hyperminer- alization, increased collagen cross-linking and decreased depolarization ratios of mineral and collagen. A standard radioprotectant, amifostine, mitigates rat mandible radiation damage, with none remaining detectable 18 weeks post-radiation. Already a powerful tool to monitor radiation damage, Raman spectroscopy may be important in development of new radiotherapy protocols and radioprotective agents. Further in vfvo studies of radiation effects on the rodent models are underway, as are development of methodologies for eventual use in human subjects.
