Curious eroded depressions,most resembling an eye shedding an elongate tear,are found in gently sloping,intertidal,carbonate-rich arenite outcropping on the sea coast near Lakes Entrance,Victoria,southeast Australia.The depressions,known locally as“Tears of the Virgin,”are evidently formed by multiple generations of a barnacle,Chthamalus antennatus Darwin,1854 in association with cyanobacteria.While the round part of a depression offers the barnacle a modicum of protection from impacts during high tides,it is also partially inhabited by cyanobacteria,which extend into and tend to fill the elongate tear.As such,this appears to be the first case of mutualism between a higher invertebrate and cyanobacteria,with the cyanobacteria reducing the barnacle’s risk of desiccation while receiving metabolic wastes from it during low tides.It is also the first record of a balanomorph barnacle eroding calcareous arenite beneath its shell,the net effect of which would be expected to reduce its adhesion to the substrate.However,the siliceous residue,resulting from the barnacle’s dissolution of the more than 80%of the calcite-rich sedimentary rock,is sequestered in delicate folds on the inside of the shell wall as it grows.A brief review of cirripedes capable of excavation includes the first photographic documentation of excavation of a mollusc shell by a verrucomorph.

Relationship between species’ home range and their other biological traits remains poorly understood, especially in migratory birds due to the difficulty associated with tracking them. Advances in satellite telemetry and remote sensing techniques have proved instrumental in overcoming such challenges. We studied the space use of migratory ducks through satellite telemetry with an objective of understanding the influence of body mass and feeding habits on their home-range sizes. We marked 26 individuals, representing five species of migratory ducks, with satellite transmitters during two consecutive winters in three Indian states. We used kernel methods to estimate home ranges and core use areas of these waterfowl, and assessed the influence of body mass and feeding habits on home-range size. Feeding habits influenced the home-range size of the migratory ducks. Carnivorous ducks had the largest home ranges, herbivorous ducks the smallest, while omnivorous species had intermediate home-ranges. Body mass did not explain variation in home-range size. To our knowledge, this is the first study of its kind on migratory ducks, and it has important implications for their conservation and management.

Agro-ecological conditions associated with the spread and persistence of highly pathogenic avian inlfuenza （HPAI） are not well understood, but the trade of live poultry is suspected to be a major pathway. Although market chains of live bird trade have been studied through indirect means including interviews and questionnaires, direct methods have not been used to identify movements of individual poultry. To bridge the knowledge gap on quantitative movement and transportation of poultry, we introduced a novel approach for applying telemetry to document domestic duck movements from source farms at Poyang Lake, China. We deployed recently developed transmitters that record Global Positioning System （GPS） locations and send them through the Groupe Spécial Mobile （GSM） cellular telephone system. For the ifrst time, we were able to track individually marked ducks from 3 to 396 km from their origin to other farms, distribution facilities, or live bird markets. Our proof of concept test showed that the use of GPS-GSM transmitters may provide di-rect, quantitative information to document the movement of poultry and reveal their market chains. Our ifndings provide an initial indication of the complexity of source-market network connectivity and highlight the great potential for future telemetry studies in poultry network analyses.

Extensive barnacle coquinas(barnamols)formed around New Zealand’s North and Chatham Islands during the late Pliocene to early Pleistocene.The inner-shelf megabalanine Fosterella is the primary constituent of these lithofacies,which also include epifaunal bivalves,bryozoans and less modified balanids like Notobalanus and Notomegabalanus.The status of genus Fosterella is reviewed,3 species are retained and a new genus,Porobalanus,is proposed for Fosterella hennigi,a species restricted to the Early Pliocene of Cockburn Island,Antarctica.Significantly,Fosterella did not survive the New Zealand Pleistocene,although Notobalanus and Notomegabalanus,which have fossil records extending back to the Early Miocene,remain important components of present day cool-temperate Southern Hemisphere faunas.Extinction of Fosterella,in shelf waters off Argentina,is explained through a combination of changing circulatory and sedimentary regimes,competition for food and space,predation and physiological constraints.The driver of these factors was rapid regional cooling.
