The objectives of this paper are to help specialists in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine plan their careers, influence the future of the PRM specialty and advocate effectively for those with limitations of functioning. The experiences of the authors are the sources of its observations and suggestions. The senior author has had extensive national and international experience in the specialty as a clinician, teacher, researcher, manager, leader and advocate. The junior author adds the insights of one who only recently has become immersed in PRM. The following are suggestions and observations the authors believe could contribute to the future success of individual PRM specialists and the PRM specialty. ①Review and reinforce the significant accomplishments of PRM over the last 70 years. It has significantly expanded the focus of health care to include the importance of functioning. ②Identify the specialty′s current strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities. As a clinical specialty, it has expanded nationally and internationally, yet its research contributions remain limited. The absence of an evidence base for much of its activity risks reduced support from payers, yet the population needing its services continues to expand. ③Develop strategies to increase the ability of PRM specialists and PRM to improve the lives of people with or likely to have limitations of functioning. These strategies could include sharing best practices, supporting effectiveness research and developing expert consensus guidelines. The need for physicians who are experts in the strategies of improving the lives of those with complex problems of functioning will continue to expand. This need will assure the continuation of the specialty of PRM as long as it improves the abilities of its members to help those with problems of functioning, and it advocates for those whom its members serve.

Although initially argued to be a feature of immature neurons with incomplete polarization, there is clear evidence that neurons in the peripheral nervous system retain the capacity for intra-axonal protein synthe- sis well into adulthood. This localized protein synthesis has been shown to contribute to injury signaling and axon regeneration in peripheral nerves. Recent works point to potential for protein synthesis in axons of the vertebrate central nervous system, mRNAs and protein synthesis machinery have now been docu- mented in lamprey, mouse, and rat spinal cord axons. Intra-axonal protein synthesis appears to be activated in adult vertebrate spinal cord axons when they are regeneration-competent. Rat spinal cord axons regen- erating into a peripheral nerve graft contain mRNAs and markers of activated translational machinery. Indeed, levels of some growth-associated mRNAs in these spinal cord axons are comparable to the regen- erating sciatic nerve. Markers of active translation tend to decrease when these axons stop growing, but can be reactivated by a second axotomy. These emerging observations raise the possibility that mRNA transport into and translation within axons could be targeted to facilitate regeneration in both the peripheral and central nervous systems.

The impact of personality on the success of prospecting behavior in changing landscapes

Personality can play a large role in dispersal decisions, influencing how each individual estimates and values expected costs versus benefits of venturing out to explore the unknown. We contrast the impact of persistence on fitness using decision theory models to examine the relative success of prospecting movement (which is a widespread behavior used by animals to explore available breeding habitat before determining where to settle) in different landscapes among individuals with different personalities. While evaluating trends in the costs and benefits of movement we provide a quantifiable measure of the impacts of relative tenacity in prospecting behavior on fitness gains/losses. Our model results predict that, regardless of landscape composition, individuals with greater tenacity in prospecting strategy have reduced fitness gains relative to individuals who are more willing to both initiate novel strategies, but then also abandon the new strategy rapidly if initial search does not seem fruitful. We show that fitness gains from choosing an appropriate prospecting strategy (i.e. abandoning poor habitat or staying in rich habitat) can be very high, indicating a potentially large influence from personality on fitness. Importantly, the model predicts that relative fitness gains are highly dependent on the availability of high quality habitat in the landscape, even if the difference under varying fitness outcomes between poor and rich habitat was substantial.

Cooperative behaviors are ubiquitous in nature and human *** is very important to understand the internal mechanism of emergence and maintenance of *** we know now,the offsprings inherit not only the phenotype but also the neighborhood relationship of their *** recent research results show that the interactions among individuals facilitate survival of cooperation through network reciprocity of clustering *** paper aims at introducing an inheritance mechanism of neighborhood relationship to explore the evolution of *** detail,a mathematical model is proposed to characterize the evolutionary process with the above inheritance *** analysis and numerical simulations indicate that high-level cooperation can emerge and be maintained for a wide variety of cost-to-benefit ratios,even if mutation happens during the evolving process.

The study is a cross-sectional design assessment of the likelihood, frequency and severity of hazards associated with underwater operations in the Niger Delta. Five oil and gas companies were used for this study selected by a purposive method given that they had the highest number of workers involved in underwater operations. A sample size of 418 was computed to which the questionnaires were administered with response rate of 95.93%. Data analyses were carried out to cover descriptive statistics, analysis of variance and Pearsonal correlation coefficients. The 4 by 4 risk assessment matrix for the likelihood and consequences showed that 8 out of 20 underwater hazards were categorized as having very high risk according to their risk ratings. The eight hazards categorized based on their risk IDs were H01, H03, H04, H08, H10, H11, H12, and H15. The 4 by 4 risk matrix for frequency and consequences revealed that two hazards (Piracy & bandit attack/kidnapping (H01) and Other main vessels/heavy object dropping or falling load/collision (H08)) were identified to be of very high risk.

Comparing surface erosion processes in four soils from the loess Plateau under extreme rainfall events

This research aims to improve erosion control practice in the loess Plateau,by studying the surface erosion processes,including splash,sheet/interrill and rill erosion in four contrasting soils under high rainfall intensity(120 mm h^(−1))with three-scale indoor artificial *** contrasting soils as sandy loam,sandy clay loam,clay loam and loamy clay were collected from different parts of the loess *** results showed that sediment load was significantly impacted by soil properties in all three *** rate(4.0-21.6 g m^(−2∙)min^(−1))was highest in sandy loam from the north part of the loess Plateau and showed a negative power relation with the mean weight diameter of aggregates after 20 min of rainfall *** average sediment load by sheet/interrill erosion(6.94-42.86 g m^(−2∙)min^(−1))was highest in clay loam from middle part of the loess Plateau,and the stable sediment load after 20 min showed a positive power relation with the silt content in *** average sediment load increased dramatically by rill and interrill erosion(21.03-432.16 g m^(−2∙)min^(−1)),which was highest in loamy clay from south part of the loess *** average sediment load after the occurrence of rill showed a positive power relation with clay content and a negative power relation with soil organic matter *** impacts of slope gradient on the runoff rate and sediment load also changed with soil *** critical factors varied for different processes,which were the aggregate size for splash erosion,the content of silt particles and slope gradient for sheet/interrill erosion,and the content of clay particles,soil organic matter and slope gradient for rill *** on the results of the experiments,specific erosion control practices were proposed by targeting certain erosion processes in areas with different soil texture and different distribution of slope *** findings from this study should support the improvement of erosion

Mineral dissolution and mechanical deformation of granite are two main mechanisms that affect permeability evolution of rock *** this study,two water flow-through experiments with large granite fractures were conducted at 200 0C with a constant flow rate for 24 h,under confining pressures of 5 and 10 MPa,*** pressure and temperature were measured,fracture aperture and permeability were calculated,and chemical element concentrations in effluent water were tested for mechanism *** permeability fluctuates up and down between 2.62 × 10^(-12)and 3.16 ×10^(-12)m^(2)at confining pressure of 5 MPa;while it decreased monotonously by 24% from 1.92 × 10^(-12)to1.45 × 10^(-12)m^(2)at a confining pressure of 10 *** heat transfer rates at both experiments stay stable at about 0.25 J/*** mass concentration of Ca,Na,K,and Si in effluent water are between 5 to 23mg/l,indicating slight dissolution of Ca-plagioclase,Na-plagioclase,and K-feldspar,as well as possible precipitation of minor amount of kaolinite or *** total amount of free-face dissolution and pressure dissolution are similar at 5 and 10 *** geochemical reaction counts for only small part of the aperture change,while the mechanical deformation counts the major part of the aperture change.
