Abstract l.goon-based municipal.wastewater treatment pl.nts （WWTPs） are facing difficul.ies meeting the needs of rapid popul.tion growth as wel. as the more stringent requirements of discharge permits. Three municipal.WWTPs were modified using a high surface area media with upgraded fine-bubbl. aeration systems. Performance data col.ected showed very promising resul.s in terms of five-day biochemical.oxygen demand （BOD5）, ammonia （NH3） and total.suspended sol.ds （TSS） removal. Two-year average ammonia effl.ents were 4.1 mg. l.1 for Col.mbia WWTP, 4 mg. l.1 for l.rchmont WWTP and 2.1 mg. l.1 for l.urel.il.e WWTE respectivel.. Two- year average BOD5 effl.ents were 6.8, 4.9 and 2.7 ***, and TSS effl.ents were 15.0, 9.6 and 7.5 mg.l.l.The systems al.o showed l.w fecal.col.form （FC） l.vel. in their effl.ents.

Previous studies on typhoon disaster risk zoning in China have focused on individual.provinces or smal.-scal. areas and l.ck county-l.vel.*** this study,typhoon disaster risk zoning is conducted for China’s coastal.area,based on data at the county *** precipitation and wind data for China and typhoon disaster and social.data at the county l.vel.for China’s coastal.area from 2004 to 2013,first we anal.ze the characteristics of typhoon disasters in China’s coastal.area and then devel.p an intensity index of factors causing typhoon disasters and a comprehensive social.vul.erabil.ty ***,by combining the two indices,we obtain a comprehensive risk index for typhoon disasters and conduct risk *** resul.s show that the maximum intensity areas are mainl. the most coastal.areas of both Zhejiang and Guangdong,and parts of Hainan Isl.nd,which is simil.r to the distribution of typhoon *** maximum val.es of vul.erabil.ty in the northwest of Guangxi,parts of Fujian coastal.areas and parts of the Shandong *** comprehensive risk index general.y decreases from coastal.areas to inl.nd *** high-risk areas are mainl. distributed over Hainan Isl.nd,south-western Guangdong,most coastal.Zhejiang,the coastal.areas between Zhejiang and Fujian and parts of the Shandong Peninsul..

Environmental.stressors can negativel. affect avian cognitive abil.ties, potential.y reducing fitness, for exampl. by al.ering response to predators, displ.y to mates, or memory of l.cations of food. We expand on current knowl.dge by investigating the effects of dietary mercury, a ubiquitous en- vironmental.pol.utant and known neurotoxin, on avian cognition. Zebra finches Taeniopygia gut- tata were dosed for their entire l.ves with sub-l.thal.l.vel. of mercury, at the environmental.y rel.- vant dose of 1.2 parts per mil.ion. In our first study, we compared the dosed birds with control. of the same age using tests of three cognitive abil.ties： spatial.memory, inhibitory control. and col.r association. In the spatial.memory assay, birds were tested on their abil.ty to l.arn and remember the l.cation of hidden food in their cage. The inhibitory control.assay measured their abil.ty to ig- nore visibl. but inaccessibl. food in favor of a l.arned behavior that provided the same reward. Final.y, the col.r association task tested each bird＇s abil.ty to associate a specific col.r with the presence of hidden food. Dietary mercury negativel. affected spatial.memory abil.ty but not inhibi- tory control.or col.r association. Our second study focused on three behavioral.assays not tied to a specific skil. or probl.m-sol.ing： activity l.vel. neophobia, and social.dominance. Zebra finches exposed to dietary mercury throughout their l.ves were subordinate to, and more active than, con- trol.birds. We found no evidence that mercury exposure infl.enced our metric of neophobia. Together, these resul.s suggest that sub-l.thal.exposure to environmental.mercury sel.ctivel. harms neurol.gical.pathways that control.different cognitive abil.ties, with compl.x effects on be- havior and fitness.
