Effect of music on procedure time and sedation during colonoscopy:A meta-analysis

AIM:To integrate results from different studies in examining the effectiveness of music in reducing the procedure time and the amount of sedation used during colonoscopic procedure. METHODS: An electronic search in various databases was performed to identify related articles. Study quality was evaluated by the Jadad’s scale. The random effect model was used to pool the effect from individual trials and the Cohen Q-statistic was used to determine heterogeneity. Egger’s regression was used to detect publication bias. RESULTS: Eight studies with 722 subjects were included in this meta-analysis. The combined mean difference for the time taken for the colonoscopy procedure between the music and control groups was -2.84 with 95% CI (-5.61 to -0.08), implying a short time for the music group. The combined mean difference for the use of sedation was -0.46 with 95%CI (-0.91 to -0.01), showing a significant reduction in the use of sedation in the music group. Heterogeneity was observed in both analyses but no publication bias was detected. CONCLUSION: Listening to music is effective in reducing procedure time and amount of sedation during colonoscopy and should be promoted.

Evaluation of a Wireless Solar Powered Personal Weather Station

We are evaluating dryland cotton production in Martin County, Texas, measuring cotton lint yield per unit of rainfall. Our goal is to collect rainfall data per 250 - 400 ha. Upon selection of a rainfall gauge, we realized that the cost of using, for example, a tipping bucket-type rain gauge would be too expensive and thus searched for an alternative method. We selected an all-in-one commercially available weather station;hereafter, referred to as a Personal Weather Station (Pws) that is both wireless and solar powered. Our objective was to evaluate average measurements of rainfall obtained with the Pws and to compare these to measurements obtained with an automatic weather station (Aws). For this purpose, we installed four Pws deployed within 20 m of the Plant Stress and Water Conservation Meteorological Tower that was used as our Aws, located at USDA-ARS Cropping Systems Research Laboratory, Lubbock, TX. In addition, we measured and compared hourly average values of short-wave irradiance (Rg), air temperature (Tair) and relative humidity (RH), and wind speed (ws), and calculated values of dewpoint temperature (Tdew). This comparison was done over a 242-day period (1 October 2022-31 May 2023) and results indicated that there was no statistical difference in measurements of rainfall between the Pws and Aws. Hourly average values of Rg measured with the Pws and Aws agreed on clear days, but Pws measurements were higher on cloudy days. There was no statistical difference between Pws and Aws hourly average measurements of Tair, RH, and calculated Tdew. Hourly average measurements of Rg and ws were more variable. We concluded that the Pws we selected will provide adequate values of rainfall and other weather variables to meet our goal of evaluating dryland cotton lint yield per unit rainfall.

Obstructive airway disease is a complex disease entity including several maladies characterized by bronchoconstriction and abnormal airway inflammation. Reversing bronchoconstriction leads to symptomatic relief and improvement in quality of life, both in reversible(bronchial asthma) and partially reversible(chronic obstructive airway disease) obstructive airway diseases. β2-adrenoceptor expressed in human airway is the main β-receptor subtype, and its activation in airway smooth muscle cells leads to bronchodilatation. Drugs targeting β-adrenoceptors have been around for many years, for which agonists of the receptors are used in bronchodilation while antagonists are used in cardiovascular diseases. This review article summarizes the effect and usage of β2-agonist in obstructive airway disease, addressing the benefits and potential risks of β2-agonist. The article also looks at the safety of β-blocker usage for cardiovascular disease in patients with obstructive airway disease. There is also emerging evidence that non-selective β-blockers with inverse agonism ironically can have longterm beneficial effects in obstructive airway disease that is beyond cardiovascular protection. Further trials are urgently needed in this area as it might lead to a dramatic turnaround in clinical practice for obstructive airway diseases as has already been seen in the usage of β-blockers for heart failure.

Many aromatic hydrocarbons are known to be toxic and carcinogenic to humans and their contamination of soils and water bodies is of great environmental concern. Hence microbial degradation of these hydrocarbons to less toxic compounds has become a vital tool in making the environment safe for humans as well as other life forms.In this study, industrial waste water samples were randomly collected from three different locations in Shuangyang local brewery. These samples were designated by the letters: HY, YY and ws. The waste water samples were used to isolate bacterium species using LB liquid medium. These bacterium cultures were transferred to a fresh media containing a concentration of Phenanthrene. The pH and Optical Density (OD) readings were measured and recorded on daily basis for a period of one week and this was the first transfer. This was done in other to ascertain the biodegradation capability of the bacterium strains in the Phenanthrene medium and the pH at which these strains degrade the pollutant- Phenanthrene. However, this process was repeated for another four consecutive weeks (five transfers). Meanwhile, from the fifth transfer the aliquot culture MSM-PHE medium was again transferred to a fresh liquid LB media and allowed to grow overnight. The bacterial cultures were again transferred to a solid MSM agar medium to obtain single colonies of bacterial strains. These cultures were transferred to a liquid MSM medium for 24 hrs and transferred again to the solid medium. This process was repeated for another three weeks to isolate pure clones. Pure clones were isolated with distinct colors and morphologies. The genetic DNA of these pure colonies was extracted, purified and two primers were used for the PCR analysis and the isolates were identified by blast analysis. These single isolates were later inoculated in a liquid MSM-PHE culture medium and their densities (biomass) were measured and recorded for a week. The isolates were also inoculated on

The hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal(HPG)axis ubiquitously regulates seasonal reproduction,following the rhythmicity of a suite of environmental *** display prominent seasonal variations in gonad size regulated by two hypothalamic peptides,gonadotropin-releasing hormone-1(GnRH-I)and gonadotropin-inhibiting hormone(GnIH).How multi-brooded avian species adjust GnRH-I and GnIH to regulate gonadal morphology seasonally remains largely ***,we studied the variations in the hypothalamic immunoreactivity(ir)of GnRH-I and GnIH,gonadal proliferation,and apoptosis in a typical multi-brooded species,the Eurasian Tree Sparrow(Passer montanus),across the pre-breeding(PB),first breeding(FB),second breeding(SB),pre-basic molt(PM),and wintering stages(ws).Our results showed that both sexes had higher preoptic area(POA)-GnRH-I-ir but lower paraventricular nucleus(PVN)-GnIH-ir neurons during the breeding stages(FB and SB)relative to other life-history stages,with no significant differences between two *** testes and ovaries were significantly larger during the breeding *** volume increased during the two broods due to anincreased diameter of seminiferous ***,there were more testicular apoptotic cells in PB and ws stages than in breeding stages,and in PB stage than in PM *** had higher POA-GnRH-I expression than females during the breeding stages,but both sexes had comparable PVN-GnIH expression throughout the annual *** sexes of the sparrows may undergo a similar pattern of life-history stage-dependent variation in the hypothalamic GnRH-I,GnIH,and gonadal morphology,except that during breeding stages,males may display higher expression of POA-GnRH-I relative to *** higher expression of POA-GnRH-I-ir in breeding male sparrows may be critical for male-dependent parental care.
