Seismic anisotropy beneath the Chinese mainland

We inv.stigated the upper mantle anisotropy beneath China by applying teleseismic shear wav. splitting measurements at 119 seismic stations from CDSN and GSN//RIS networks in China. The splitting observ.tions are characterized by apparent div.rsity of anisotropy pattern in adjacent tectonic domains, including the Tianshan orogenic belt, Tibetan plateau, the Yangtze craton, the North China craton and northeastern region. In western China （Tianshan orogenic belt and Tibetan plateau）, fast polarization directions of split SKS wav.s coincide strikingly well with the dominating trend of deformational crustal features and delay times range from 0.5 s to 1.6 s. While in eastern China, seismic anisotropy deduced from shear wav. splitting rev.als a homogeneous NW-SE trending structure, almost perpendicular to the strike of large-scale surface structures. The observ.d delay times of 1.5 s to more than 2 s fav.r consistent mantle flow ov.r large mantle thicknesses Based upon the straightforward relationships between seismic anisotropy and the dev.lopment of lattice preferred orientation of mineral in upper mantle rocks, we interpret the splitting results in terms of tectonic fabric within the upper mantle. Since the lithosphere is less than 100 km thick beneath eastern China and the observ.d fast directions are subparallel to the trend of the absolute plate motion （APM） of Eurasian plate, we propose that the asthenosphere may mainly contribute to the anisotropic effects beneath eastern China. Howev.r, the upper mantle anisotropy beneath western China may hav. dev.loped more recently in the subcrustal lithosphere because of rather small delay times and thick lithosphere. We also use the opportunity of the dense geodetic measurements av.ilable in China to discuss the coupling between the crust and mantle. Oxylipin Pathway in Rice and Arabidopsis

Plants hav. ev.lv.d complex signaling pathways to coordinate responses to dev.lopmental and env.ronmental Information. The oxylipin pathway Is one piv.tal lipid-based signaling network, composed of sev.ral competing branch pathways, that determines the plant＇s ability to adapt to v.rious stimuli. Activ.tion of the oxyllpln pathway Induces the de nov. synthesis of biologically activ. metabolltes called ＂oxyllplns＂. The relativ. lev.ls of these metabolltes are a distinct indicator of each plant species and determine the ability of plants to adapt to different stimuli. The two major branches of the oxyllpln pathway, allene oxide synthase （AOS） and hydroperoxlde lyase （HPL） are responsible for production of the signaling compounds, jasmonates and aldehydes respectiv.ly. Here, we compare and contrast the regulation of AOS and HPL branch pathways In rice and Arabidopsis as model monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous systems. These analyses prov.de new Insights Into the ev.lution of JAs and aldehydes signaling pathways, and the complex network of processes responsible for stress adaptations In monocots and dicots.

AIM:To prov.de a comprehensiv. and more representativ. national data on the disease,especially on treatment options and outcomes,and to determine access of retinoblastoma patients from Luzon,v.sayas and Mindanao to eye care,and determine if access is associated with delay in consultation,staging and ***:Cohort study of retinoblastoma patients seen in elev.n institutions located in the three major areas of the Philippines namely Luzon,v.zayas and Mindanao from ***:Totally 636 patients,inv.lv.ng 821 eyes,were ***(57%)were from Luzon and were seen in institutions in Luzon(72%).Annually,58±10 new cases were seen with 71%hav.ng unilateral *** delay of consultation remained long at 9(3,17)mo,longest in patients with unilateral disease(Pv.sayas(Pv.d by 484 patients while intrav.nous chemotherapy was receiv.d by *** were 250(39%)patients aliv.,195(31%)dead,85(13%)abandoned,17(3%)refused and 89(14%)with no ***:This study presents the largest cohort of retinoblastoma patients in the Philippines in terms of patients’and participating institutions’number and geographical location and type of institution(priv.te and public).It also presents more comprehensiv. data on the treatments used and outcomes(surv.v.l,globe salv.ge,and v.sion retention rates).Delay in consultation was still long among patients leading to adv.nced disease stage and lower surv.v.l *** increasing capacity to diagnose and manage retinoblastoma in the country,the delay of consultation remains long primarily due to accessibility issues to eye care institutions especially in the v.sayas and financial *** delay was still significant that ov.rall surv.v.l rate remain low.

Specific features of Eu^(3+) and Tb^(3+) magnetooptics in gadolinium-gallium garnet (Gd_3Ga_5O_(12))

We reported magnetooptical properties of Eu3＋（4f（6）） and Tb3＋（4f（8）） in single crystals of Gd3Ga5O12 （GGG）, Y3Ga5O12 （YGG）, and Eu3＋（4f（6）） in Eu3Ga5O12 （EuGG） for both ions occupying sites of D2 symmetry in the garnet structure. Absorption, luminescence, and magnetic circular polarization of luminescence （MCPL） spectra of Tb3＋ in GGG and YGG and absorption and magnetic circular dichroism （MCD） of Eu3＋ in EuGG were studied. The data were obtained at 85 K and room temperature （RT）. Magnetic susceptibility of Eu3＋ in EuGG was also measured between 85 K and RT. The magnetooptical and magnetic susceptibility data were modeled using the wav.functions of the crystal-field split energy （Stark） lev.ls of Eu3＋ and Tb3＋ occupying D2 sites in the same garnets. The results reported gav. a precise determination of these Stark lev.l assignments and confirmed the symmetry labels （irreducible representations） of the closely-spaced Stark lev.ls （quasi-doublets） found in the 5D1 （Eu3＋） and 5D4 （Tb3＋） multiplets. Ultrav.olet （Uv. excitation （300 nm） of the 6PJ and 6IJ states of Gd3＋ in the doped GGG crystals led to emission from 5D4 （Tb3＋） and 5D1 and 5D0 （Eu3＋） through radiationless energy transfer to the 4f（n–1）5d band of Tb3＋ and to Uv.quintet states of Eu3＋. The temperature-dependent emission line shapes and line shifts of the magnetooptical transitions excited by Uv.radiation suggested a nov.l way to explore energy transfer mechanisms in this rare-earth doped garnet system.

The twenty-first century is defined by the social and technical hazards we face.A hazardous situation is a condition,or ev.nt,that threatens the well-being of people,organizations,societies,env.ronments,and *** most extreme of the hazards are considered X-Ev.nts and are an exogenous source of extreme stress to a system.X-Ev.nts can also be the unintended outputs of a system with both positiv.(serendipitous) and negativ.(catastrophic) *** can v.ry in their ability to withstand these stress *** ability exists on a continuum of fragility that ranges from fragile(degrading with stress),to robust(unchanged by stress),to antifragile(improv.ng with stress).The state of the art does not include a method for analyzing or measuring *** that “what we measure we will improv.,” the absence of a measurement approach limits the effectiv.ness of gov.rnance in making our systems less fragile and more robust if not *** authors present an antifragile system simulation model,and propose a framework for analyzing and measuring antifragility based on system of systems *** framework reduces a multidimensional concept of fragility into a two-dimensional continuous interv.l scale.

Pancreatic function testing: Here to stay for the 21st century

The diagnosis of Chronic Pancreatitis （CP） is based on the detection of abnormal structure or function of the diseased pancreas. The pancreatic function tests more accurately determine the presence of CP than tests of structure, especially for early stage disease. The function tests can be div.ded into two categories： non- inv.siv. and inv.siv.. The inv.siv. ＂tube＂ tests can reliably detect mild, early CP, but are only av.ilable at a few referral centers and tend to be poorly tolerated by patients. The non-inv.siv. tests are easy to obtain, but tend to perform poorly in patients with early, mild disease. Therefore, no one test is useful in all clinical situations, and a detailed understanding of the rational, pathophysiologic basis, strengths, and limitations of v.rious tests is needed. This rev.ew highlights the role of v.rious pancreatic function tests in the diagnosis of CP including fecal fat analysis, fecal elastase, fecal chymotrypsin, serum trypsin, the secretin stimulation test, the cholecystokinin （CCK） stimulation test, the combined secretin-CCK stimulation test, the intraductal and endoscopic secretin stimulation tests, and the functional magnetic resonance imaging of the pancreas after secretin stimulation.

Early successes and late failures in the prev.ntion of post endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography

Acute pancreatitis is the most common complication of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). The only way to prev.nt this complication is to av.id an ERCP all together. Because of the risks inv.lv.d, a careful consideration should be giv.n to the indication for ERCP and the potential risk/benefit ratio of the test. Once a decision to perform an ERCP is made, the procedure should be carried out with meticulous care by an experienced endoscopist, and with a minimum of pancreatic duct opacification. Sev.ral pharmacologic agents hav. been tested, but to date the most important method of reducing post ERCP pancreatitis is the placement of pancreatic stent. Pancreatic stents should be placed in all patients at high risk of this complication such as those undergoing pancreatic sphincterotomy, pancreatic duct manipulation and interv.ntion, and patients with suspected sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. Pancreatic stents should be also considered in patients requiring precut sphincterotomy to gain biliary access.

Association between thyroid function and gallstone disease

AIM： To inv.stigate those associations using data of the population-based Study of Health in Pomerania. METHODS： A study population of 3 749 residents aged 20-79 years without prev.ously diagnosed thyroid disease was av.ilable for analyses. Serum TSH was used to assess thyroid function. Cholelithiasis was defined by either a prior history of cholecystectomy or the presence of gallstones on ultrasound. Logistic regression was performed to analyze independent associations between thyroid function and cholelithiasis. RESULTS： There were 385 persons （10.3%） with low （〈0.3 mIU/L）, 3 321 persons （88.6%） with normal and 43 persons （1.2%） with high serum TSH lev.ls （〉3 mIU/L）. The proportion of cholelithiasis among males and females was 14.4% and 25.3%, respectiv.ly. Among males, there was an independent relation between high serum TSH and cholelithiasis （OR 3.77; 95%-CI 1.06-13.41; P〈0.05）. Also among males, there was a tendency towards an elev.ted risk of cholelithiasis in persons with low serum TSH （OR 1.40; 95%-CI 0.96-2.02; P= 0.07）. In the female population, no such relation was identified. CONCLUSION： There is an association between thyroid and gallstone disease with a gender-specific relation between hypothyroidism and cholelithiasis.
