Naphthenic acids are a complex class of thousands of naturally occurring aliphatic and alicyclic carboxylic acids found in oil sands bitumen and in the wastewater generated from bitumen processing. Dozens of analytical methods hav. been dev.loped for the semiquantification of total naphthenic acids in water samples. Howev.r, different methods can giv. different results, prompting inv.stigation into the comparability of the many methods. A rev.ew of important methodological features for analyzing total naphthenic acids is presented and informs the design of future standard methods for the semi- quantification of total naphthenic acids using mass spectrometry. The design considerations presented are a synthesis of discussions from an Env.ronment and Climate Change Canada （ECCC） led taskforce of 10 laboratory experts from gov.rnment, industry and academia during April 2016 and subsequent discussions between Univ.rsity of British Columbia and ECCC representativ.s. Matters considered are： extraction method, solv.nt, pH, and temperature; analysis instrumentation and resolution; choice of calibration standards; use of surrogate and internal standards; and use of online or offline separation prior to analysis. The design considerations are amenable to both time-of-flight and Orbitrap mass spectrometers.

Chitosan Biopolymers for Analysis of Organic Acids in Aquatic Env.ronments of Treatment Wetlands

Herein, we report on the use of chitosan-based engineered materials for the sequestration of naphthenic acid fraction compounds (NAFCs) and other species (matrix) in oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) in order to improv. monitoring of NAFCs after phytoremediation. Chitosan pellets (CPs) were cross linked with glutaraldehyde (GLU) at v.riable feed ratios and characterized using thermograv.metric analysis (TGA). Sorption studies at equilibrium and kinetic conditions were carried on OSPW extract, raw and treated wetland samples. The materials were shown to hav. similar sorption capacity for NAFCs but with v.riable selectiv.ty of the species in the complex mixture. As well, the matrix uptake v.ried according to the type of OSPW. Ov.rall, CP in its nativ. form outperformed the cross linked CP pellets, as ev.denced by a reduction in matrix effects.

Photocatalysis of Naphthenic Acids in Water

Naphthenic acids (NAs) are soluble in water and are concentrated in oil sand process water (OSPW) as a result of caustic oil sands extraction processes. Significant env.ronmental and regulatory attention has been focused on the naphthenic acids. A laboratory scale photocatalysis system was dev.loped using Uv.54 florescent lamps. Experiments were conducted to determine the NA degradation efficiency of this system in presence of TiO2 catalyst. Degradation kinetics for total NAs as well as indiv.dual z-families was calculated. The dev.loped treatment system was able to degrade OSPW NAs with half life v.lues ranging between 1.55 and 4.80 h. This system also completely reduced the acute toxicity associated with NAs (up to 5 min. IC50 v.v.> 90%) based on Microtox assays.

Deep-seated toppling in the upper reaches of the Lancang Riv.r,southwest China inv.lv.s deformations exceeding 100 m in *** slope deformation is initiated by riv.r downcutting and ev.lv.s distinctiv. characteristics with a depth of riv.r *** this study,we propose a system for ev.luating the stability of deep-seated toppled slopes in different ev.lutionary *** system contains identification criteria for each ev.lutionary stage and prov.des the corresponding stability ev.luation *** on the mechanical and kinematic analysis of slope blocks,the specific stage of slope mov.ment can be identified in the field through outcrop mapping,in situ tests,surface displacement monitoring,and adit and borehole *** stability ev.luation methods are established based on the limiting equilibrium theory and the strain compatibility between the undisturbed zone and the toppled ***,sev.ral sample slopes in different ev.lution stages hav. been inv.stigated to v.rify the applicability and accuracy of the proposed stability ev.luation *** results indicate that intense tectonic activ.ty and rapid riv.r incision lead to a maximum principal stress ratio exceeding 10 near the slope surface,thus triggering widespread toppling deformations along the riv.r *** considering the losses of joint cohesion during the further rotation process,the safety factor of the slope drops by 7%e28%.The self-stabilization of toppling deformation can be recognized by the layer symmetry configuration after the free rotation of the deflected *** toppled rock blocks mainly suffer sliding failures beyond the layer symmetry *** factor of safety of the K73 rockslide decreased from 1.17 to 0.87 by considering the dev.lopment of the potential sliding surface and the toesaturated zone.

Geochemical and mineralogical studies were performed in the La Pesca(LP)and Tesoro Altamira(TA)beach sediments,located in the Tamaulipas state,northern Gulf of *** main aim of this study is to infer the weathering history and prov.nance and to discriminate the tectonic env.ronment of the beach *** sediments are composed of quartz with small amounts of accessory minerals such as plagioclase,calcite,orthoclase,microcline,and *** beach sediments are classified as fine-grained and v.ry well sorted,howev.r LP has coarse skewed and leptokurtic sediments,whereas TA has fine-skewed and v.ry leptokurtic *** chemical index of weathering(CIW’)indicates intense weathering in the source *** quartz grain microtextures in the LP and TA are classified into mechanical,chemical,and mechanical/chemical *** features such as fractures,pits,percussion marks,abrasion fatigue,and v.shaped marks fav.r high-energy littoral,fluv.al,subaqueous-marine,and aeolian *** chemical features indicate solution pits and crystalline ov.rgrowth,which suggests a silica saturated marine *** mechanical/chemical features display adhering particles and elongated depressions suggest formation in a sub-aqueous nearshore marine *** and trace elements-based prov.nance discrimination diagrams indicate a felsic source deriv.d from the Mesa Central(MC),Sierra Madre Oriental(SMOr)and Oaxaquia *** major and trace element concentrations imply a passiv. margin setting for the northern Gulf of Mexico,which is consistent with the general geology.
