Flood Forecasting GIS Water-Flow Visualization Enhancement (WaVE): A Case Study

Riverine flood event situation awareness and emergency management decision support systems require accurate and scalable geoanalytic data at the local level. This paper introduces the Water-flow Visualization Enhancement (WaVE), a new framework and toolset that integrates enhanced geospatial analytics visualization (common operating picture) and decision support modular tools. WaVE enables users to: 1) dynamically generate on-the-fly, highly granular and interactive geovisual real-time and predictive flood maps that can be scaled down to show discharge, inundation, water velocity, and ancillary geomorphology and hydrology data from the national level to regional and local level;2) integrate data and model analysis results from multiple sources;3) utilize machine learning correlation indexing to interpolate streamflow proxy estimates for non-functioning streamgages and extrapolate discharge estimates for ungaged streams;and 4) have time-scaled drill-down visualization of real-time and forecasted flood events. Four case studies were conducted to test and validate WaVE under diverse conditions at national, regional and local levels. Results from these case studies highlight some of WaVE’s inherent strengths, limitations, and the need for further development. WaVE has the potential for being utilized on a wider basis at the local level as data become available and models are validated for converting satellite images and data records from remote sensing technologies into accurate streamflow estimates and higher resolution digital elevation models.

An apple rootstock overexpressing a peach CBF gene alters growth and flowering in the scion but does not impact cold hardiness or dormancy

The Correlation of IFN <i>γ</i>to the Preferential Isolation of Influenza Type B over Type A Viruses in Madin Darby Canine Kidney Cells

The isolation of influenza viruses in Madin Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cells has shown preferential isolation of a great percentage of Influenza B strains at the first passage than Influenza A strains. During in vitro isolation of Influenza viruses, majority of type A viruses are not confirmed as positive isolates by Hemagglutination (HA) assay despite having higher virulence and pathogenicity versus influenza B viruses. This study investigated the differences in IFN-γ and IL-10 cytokines secreted by MDCK cells upon exposure to the viruses and thus provided possible answers as to why influenza type B can easily be isolated from MDCK cells compared to influenza A. Positive influenza viruses were inoculated onto MDCK cells. IFN-γ and IL-10 cytokines stimulated by the viruses in MDCK cells were measured by indirect ELISA at 1 hour, 12 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours post inoculation (pi). A total of 46 specimens, with 23 specimens from each virus type were analyzed. IFN-γ was significantly higher at 1 hour pi in MDCK cells for influenza type A at p value of 0.024 than type B. No statistical significance was observed in means of cytokine IL-10 between influenza type A and type B. The study may show that IFN-γ is correlated to the preferential isolation of influenza type B over type A viruses. Anti-inflammatory cytokines may not necessarily be playing a role in the preferential growth of influenza type B, a less virulent type over influenza type A in MDCK cells.

Objective: Secondary metabolites and polyphenolic compounds from medicinal plants have been demonstrated to have multiple biological functions with promising research and development prospects. This study examined the effect of β-stigmasterol(with ergosterol) and xylopic acid isolated from Anchomanes difformis on liver mitochondrial permeability transition pore(mPTP).Methods: The compounds were isolated by vacuum liquid chromatography. Mitochondrial swelling was assessed as changes in absorbance under succinate-energized ***:1H and13C NMR spectroscopic elucidation of the isolates affirmed the presence of β-stigmasterol with ergosterol(1:0.3) and xylopic acid. The isolates reversed the increase in lipid peroxidation and inhibited the opening of mitochondrial permeability transition pores caused by calcium and *** inhibition of m PTP offers a promising therapeutic target for the treatment of mitochondrial-associated ***: Reduction in the activity of calcium ATPase and the expression of Caspase-3 and-9 were observed, suggesting that they could play a role in protecting physicochemical properties of membrane bilayers from free radical-induced severe cellular damage and be useful in the management of diseases where much apoptosis occurs.

The Encouraging Novel Amelogenesis Models and Ex vivo cell Lines （ENAMEL） Development workshop was held on 23 June 2017 at the Bethesda headquarters of the National institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research （NIDCR）. Total pancreatectomy: Short- and long-term outcomes at a high-volume pancreas center

AIM To identify the current indications and outcomes of total pancreatectomy at a high-volume center. METHODS A single institutional retrospective study of patients undergoing total pancreatectomy from 1995 to 2014 was *** One hundred and three patients underwent totalpancreatectomy for indications including: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(n = 42, 40.8%), intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms(n = 40, 38.8%), chronic pancreatitis(n = 8, 7.8%), pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors(n = 7, 6.8%), and miscellaneous(n = 6, 5.8%). The mean age was 66.2 years, and 59(57.3%) were female. Twenty-four patients(23.3%) underwent a laparoscopic total pancreatectomy. Splenic preservation and portal vein resection and reconstruction were performed in 24(23.3%) and 18 patients(17.5%), respectively. The 90 d major complications, readmission, and mortality rates were 32%, 17.5%, and 6.8% respectively. The 1-, 3-, 5-, and 7-year survival for patients with benign indications were 84%, 82%, 79.5%, and 75.9%, and for malignant indications were 64%, 40.4%, 34.7% and 30.9%, *** Total pancreatectomy, including laparoscopic total pancreatectomy, appears to be an appropriate option for selected patients when treated at a high-volume pancreatic center and through a multispecialty approach.
