Food supply and the obesity scourge: Is there a relationship?

This paper reviews literature on the relationship between food supply and obesity. The focus is on the supply, cost, and variety of food through various types of food outlets and the impact of these factors on obesity in developed countries. The article reveals complex relationships between food supply factors and obesity. A numer of factors related to lifestyles including the mobility of populations and the use of motor vehicles greatly reduce the impact of the local environment on family and individual eating patterns. However, obesity is also affected by factors such as the type and density of food outlets, the cost of food, the travel distance and means of transport to the food outlet. While the relationship between food supply and obesity in the literature reveals complex and mixed findings, this paper concludes obesity is complex and food supply is only part of this phenomenon’s predictors. Because the relationship between food supply and obesity is mediated by such multiple and complex factors including population behaviours, beliefs, lifestyles, knowledge and both food and physical environments;multiple strategies including policy development and other strategies aimed at manipulating food environments, physical environments, populations’ beliefs, behaviours and practices must be considered in searching for evidence to effectively combat obesity.

Effect of Acute Volume Loading on LV Function after Acute Cardiac Decentralization in Anesthetized Canines

The present study investigated the role of cardiac nerves on homeometric autoregulation in anesthetized dogs during acute volume loading. Ventricular pressure-volume loops (conductance catheter method) were constructed during acute volume loading with intact cardiac nerves (ICN) and after cardiac decentralization (DCN;bilateral ablation of thoracic vagosympathetic complexes, stellate ganglia and anterior and posterior ansae subclavia). Arterial pressure increased as expected after volume loading but no significant changes were observed for heart rate and other hemodynamic parameters. Coronary sinus venous oxygen content was also higher regardless of nerve status in response to the overall increase in cardiac work. Pressure-volume catheter data showed markedly higher end-systolic volumes after volume loading under ICN and DCN conditions;stroke volume (mL/beat) and stroke work (mL/mm Hg) were not changed but LV ejection fraction was significantly lower. End-diastolic volume and cardiac output did not change. In addition, systemic vascular resistance and tau were higher with volume loading but no differences between ICN and DCN were observed. These findings show that acute volume loading produces an immediate influence on LV function independent of cardiac nerve status.

Antibiotic-impregnated ventricular shunt catheters(AIVsCs)with 0.15%clindamycin and 0.054%rifampin are commonly used to prevent ventriculo-peritoneal(VP)shunt *** approved by the United states Food and Drug Administration in 2003(https://***/file/general/***),they have antimicrobial activity documented for minimum 31 days(https://***/cdrh_docs/pdf11/***).These antibiotics were chosen as they cover the majority of staphylococcus aureus and may provide some activity against coagulase negative staphylococci.1 These normal skin flora account for the majority of VP shunt *** the largest randomized controlled trial(RCT)to date,AIVsCs significantly reduced the risk of infection compared with standard shunts(cause-specific hazard ratio(HR)0.38).2 This effect was mainly due to a reduction in staphylococcal infections;the number of gram-negative infections was similar in both *** studies3–5 and a meta-analysis6 in children support the findings of this *** objective of this study was to examine the spectrum of pathogens,time to infection,and outcomes with AIVsCs vs standard shunts.

Quercetin: A Promising Flavonoid with a Dynamic Ability to Treat Various Diseases, Infections, and Cancers

Quercetin is a multifaceted dietary flavonoid with a multitude of biologic activities that can be used to treat various ailments. These include cancer, bacterial and viral infections, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. A greater emphasis on cancer is discussed within this paper by highlighting some of the beneficial qualities of quercetin without including other related dietary flavonoids and quercetin analogs. In vitro and in vivo analysis are evaluated without making recommendations on dosage, dosing regiments, or administration since quercetin has not been subjected to rigorous clinical trials despite the significant amount of research that has been conducted with quercetin.

Land Cover Dynamics in the Kirisia Forest Ecosystem, samburu County, Kenya

The study characterized the status and trend of land cover transformation in Kirisia forest ecosystem between 1973 and 2015 using remote sensing and GIs. The dominant land cover types consisted of indigenous forest followed by shrub land and bush land. The findings showed a major increase in the built environment by 55.4% and an overall reduction in forest cover by 21.3%. Up to 83.9 km2 of the original indigenous forest was lost between 1973 and 1986 due to severe fires. Thereafter, 23.7 km2 of the remaining indigenous forest was lost between 1986 and 2000 mainly through charcoal burning, illegal timber logging and livestock forage harvesting. A slight recovery occurred between 2000 and 2015 with a 5% increase in indigenous forest cover mostly through natural succession by shrub land and bush land in the burnt forest areas especially following the 1998 El Nino period. The land cover change in the forest ecosystem was not exceptional in Kenya but mirrors similar changes that have been documented in other valued dry land watershed ecosystems in the country including the national water towers. The continued loss of forest cover is likely to affect the water recharge capacity in the watershed thereby creating severe water scarcity for the people in Mararal town as well as nearly 142,954 other individuals in the Kirisia region. Appropriate interventions are therefore needed to mitigate the negative land cover change in Kirisia forest and restore its hydrological functions and water recharge capacity.
