Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is the world’s commonest cause of childhood blindness. More than half of these cases occur in developing countries. Animal sourced foods though good sources of vitamin A are too expensive for poor rural people. Crops biofortified with provitamin A offer a convenient and accessible source of vitamin A. The other micro-nutrient programs of fortification and supplementation require more expensive inputs. Biofortification programs have developed crops that are rich in provitamin A. These crops include: maize, golden rice, cassava and orange fleshed sweetpotato (OFsP). With exception of golden rice, the rest of the biofortified crops have received considerable acceptance among the communities. Both animal and human studies have shown that provitamin A from biofortified crops is highly bioavailable and have capacity to improve vitamin A status. After several years of research and promotion, it is time to fully commercialize provitamin A crops by encouraging farmers to start their large scale production and consumption.

Real-world user satisfaction with a fixed dose combination over-the-counter cold remedy (Vicks symptomed Complete Cytrynowy hot drink;VsCC) was evaluated in a prospective, non-comparative, observational study involving 176 pharmacies in Poland from February to April 2015. 1391 participants completed a questionnaire in the pharmacy and several paper questionnaires at home following use of the product at their own discretion. Participants returned their completed questionnaires to the pharmacy. 1356 participants were included in the intent-to-treat analysis. Participants highly valued the advice from their pharmacist (97%, P s. not important) and thought the quality of that advice was good (93%, P s. very bad-fair). 96% of participants found VsCC to be effective in some way against their cold symptoms (P s. not effective) and 68% of them stated that it was better than any other cold therapy they had used before (P st vs. same/worse). Adverse event reporting was very low.

sediment and macrobenthic fauna distribution at Dar es salaam harbour channel were investigated to attest the influence of sediment grain size distribution and total organic carbon contents on benthic macrofauna dominance and diversity. sampling campaign was conducted from January to April, 2019 in 25 sampling stations along the channel. sediment grain sizes ranged between 0.7405 and 0.00273 mm with an average of 0.0804 mm classified as medium silt. sediment distribution showed an onshore-offshore pattern consisting of fine dark clay-silt sediments in the southern part of the harbour close to Mwalimu Nyerere Bridge, medium (sandy) at the harbour and coarse sandy offshore. Five classes of macrofauna were identified with sedentary Polychaetes (Diopatra cuprea) found in tubes and free forms being dominant in most of the sediment types, however more abundant in clay-silt. High species diversity index values were encountered in sediments with medium total organic carbon (TOC) and sediment grain sizes (sand-silt). Apparently, low species similarity indices were observed in all sediment type indicating significant dissimilarities in species composition among sediment grain sizes. Thus, the distribution of benthic macrofauna species along Dar es salaam harbour channel is strongly influenced by the sediment grain sizes and organic carbon contents in sediments.

Carbon fibre reinforced composite materials are used widely in applications ranging from automobiles to aircraft and sports equipment. In all of these applications plasma treatment can be used to activate the composite surface in order to enhance surface energy, prior to adhesive bonding. In this study plasma metrology is used as a means of evaluating the performance of a reel-to-reel atmospheric pressure plasma system consisting of two reactor chambers used to active a composite is investigated. A real-time electrical (current and voltage and resonant drive frequency) parametric analysis of the plasma treatment process was carried out as the carbon composite was passed through the plasma chamber. A reproducible correlation was obtained between the plasma parameters and the position of the composite in the two plasma reactor chambers.

Matrigel modulates a stem cell phenotype and promotes tumor formation in a mantle cell lymphoma cell line

Tumors may be maintained by subpopulations of cells possessing stem cell-like properties. We evaluated the stem cell-like and tumor-forming properties of side population (sP) and CD133+/ CD44+ cells in Granta 519, a human mantle cell lymphoma cell line. The in-vitro Cobblestone Area Forming Cell (CAFC) assay, designed to detect stem and progenitor cells, revealed that sP cells contained the greatest proportion of stem cell-like cells. The addition of Matrigel to CAFC assays of sP and non-sP cells both increased their respective stem cell frequencies in comparison to those cultures without Matrigel, and additionally resulted in observed stem cell frequencies which were the same between sP and non-sP cells. Contrary, Matrigel decreased the stem cell frequencies of CD133+/CD44+ or CD133-/CD44- cells. In-vivo assays revealed tumor formation from Matrigel-mixed sP and non-sP cells, and in one instance, occurred with as few as one Matrigel-mixed sP cell. Vehicle-mixed injections of sP and non-sP tumor cells resulted in tumor formation from sP cells only. Tumor formation did not occur from Matrigel nor hyaluronan (cellular substrate for CD44-expressing cells)-mixed populations of CD133+/CD44+ or CD133-/CD44- cells. These data demonstrate that Matrigel modulates a stem cell phenotype and promotes tumor formation from sP and non-sP cells. The tumor micro-environmental niche and tumor cell to micro-environmental interactions may be important future targets for novel chemotherapeutic agents.

Time series for the southern Oscillation Index and mean global near surface temperature anomalies are compared for the 1950 to 2012 period using recently released HadCRU4 data. The method avoids a focused statistical analysis of the data, in part because the study deals with smoothed data, which means there is the danger of spurious correlations, and in part because the El Ni?o southern Oscillation is a cyclical phenomenon of irregular period. In these situations the results of regression analysis or similar statistical evaluation can be misleading. With the potential controversy arising over a particular statistical analysis removed, the findings indicate that El Nino-southern Oscillation exercises a major influence on mean global temperature. The results show the potential of natural forcing mechanisms to account for mean global temperature variation, although the extent of the influence is difficult to quantify from among the variability of short-term influences.
