Evaluation of the Pr.cision Agr.cultur.l Landscape Modeling System (PALMS) in the Semiar.d Texas Souther. High Plains

Accur.te models to simulate the soil water.balance in semiar.d cr.pping systems ar. needed to evaluate management pr.ctices for.soil and water.conser.ation in both ir.igated and dr.land pr.duction systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the application of the Pr.cision Agr.cultur.l Landscape Modeling System (PALMS) model to simulate soil water.content thr.ughout the gr.wing season for.sever.l year. and for.thr.e major.soil ser.es of the semiar.d Texas Souther. High Plains (SHP). Accur.cy of the model was evaluated by compar.ng measur.d and calculated values of soil water.content and using r.ot mean squar.d differ.nce (r.SD), squar.d bias (SB), squar.d differ.nce between standar. deviations (SDSD), and lack of cor.elation weighted by the standar. deviation (LCS). Differ.nt ver.ions of the model wer. obtained by modifying soil hydr.ulic pr.per.ies, including satur.ted hydr.ulic conductivity (Ks) and r.sidual (θr. and satur.ted (θs) soil volumetr.c water.content, which wer. calculated using r.setta pedotr.nsfer.functions. These modifications wer. combined with updated r.utines of the soil water.solver.in PALMS to account for.r.pid infiltr.tion into dr. soils that often occur.in the SHP. Field studies wer. conducted acr.ss a wide r.nge of soil and water.conditions in the SHP. Soil water.content was measur.d by neutr.n attenuation and gr.vimetr.cally thr.ughout the gr.wing seasons at each location to compar. absolute values and the spatial distr.bution of soil water.with PALMS calculated values. Use of r.setta calculated soil hydr.ulic pr.per.ies impr.ved PALMS soil water.calculation fr.m 1% - 13% of measur.d soil volumetr.c water.content (θv) depending on soil type. Lar.e-scale models such as PALMS have the potential to mor. r.alistically r.pr.sent management effects on soil water.availability in agr.cultur.l fields. Impr.vements in PALMS soil water.calculations indicated that the model may be useful to assess long-ter. implications of management pr.ctices

Fine mapping of susceptibility genes by Lewontin's linkage disequilibr.um measur. with application to Alzheimer.s disease

Objectives To for.ulate an equation for.fine mapping of disease loci under.complex conditions and deter.ine the mar.er.disease distance in a specific case using this equation. Methods Lewontin’s linkage disequilibr.um (LD) measur. D’ was used to for.ulate an equation for.mapping disease genes in the pr.sence of phenocopies, locus heter.geneity, gene-gene and gene-envir.nment inter.ctions, incomplete penetr.nce, uncer.ain liability and thr.shold, incomplete initial LD, natur.l selection, r.cur.ent mutation, high disease allele fr.quency and unknown mode of inher.tance. This equation was then used to deter.ine the distance between a mar.er.(ε4 within the apolipopr.tein E gene, APOE) and Alzheimer.s disease (AD) loci using published *** An equation was for.ulated for.mapping disease genes under.the above conditions. If these conditions ar. pr.sent but ignor.d, then r.combination fr.ction θ between mar.er.and disease loci will be either.over.stimated or.estimated with little bias. Ther.for., an upper.limit of θ can be obtained. AD has been found to be associated with the mar.er.allele ε4 in Afr.cans, Asians, and Caucasians. This suggests that the AD-ε4 allelic LD pr.dates the diver.ence of peoples occur.ing 100?000 year. ago. With the age of AD-ε4 allelic LD so estimated, the maximal distance was calculated to be 23.2 kb (mean 5.8 kb). Conclusions (1) A method is developed for.LD mapping of susceptibility genes. (2) A mutation within the APOE gene itself, among other., is r.sponsible for.the susceptibility to AD, which is suppor.ed by r.cent evidence fr.m studies using tr.nsgenic mice.

Although estuar.es ar. cr.tical habitats for.many aquatic species, the spatial tr.nds of toxic methylmer.ur.（MeHg） in biota fr.m fr.sh to mar.ne water. ar. poor.y under.tood. Our.objective was to deter.ine if MeHg concentr.tions in biota changed along a salinity gr.dient in an estuar.. Four.pine Stickleback（Apeltes quadr.cus）, inver.ebr.tes（snails,amphipods, and chir.nomids）, sediments, and water.wer. collected fr.m ten sites along the Saint john r.ver.estuar., New Br.nswick, Canada in 2015 and 2016, with salinities r.nging fr.m 0.06 to 6.96. Total mer.ur.（pr.xy for.MeHg） was measur.d in whole fish and MeHg was measur.d in a subset of fish, pooled inver.ebr.tes, sediments, and water. Stable sulfur.δ34S）, car.on（δ13 C）, and nitr.gen（δ15N） isotope values wer. measur.d to assess ener.y sour.es（S, C） and r.lative tr.phic level（N）. Ther. wer. incr.ases in biotic δ13C and δ34S fr.m fr.sh to mor. saline sites and these measur.s wer. cor.elated with *** aqueous MeHg was higher.at the fr.shwater.than mor. saline sites, only chir.nomid MeHg incr.ased significantly with salinity. In the Saint john r.ver.estuar., ther. was little evidence that MeHg and its associated r.sks incr.ased along a salinity gr.dient.

Biomass supplies about 80% of the ener.y needs for.cooking and heating in r.r.l Ghana. It is predominantly used in traditional and inefficient forms (fir.wood and charcoal), which presents environmental and health concerns. In order to better the living standard in rural Ghana, efforts must be made to provide modern energy services. Most rural communities in Ghana are so remote that an extension of the national grid is uneconomical, hence biomass electricity provides a viable alternative. Biomass is pivotal to the socio-economic development of r.r.l Ghana due to its easy accessibility and enor.ous potential in the pr.duction of var.ed ener.y for.s. In this paper. a compr.hensive r.view of biomass r.sour.es, biomass ener.y conver.ion technologies and bioener.y pr.duction potential for.r.r.l development in Ghana is pr.vided. The most impor.ant feedstock fr.m an ener.y per.pective was found to be cr.p r.sidues. Based on 2017 statistics, Ghana has a theor.tical potential of 623.84 PJ of ener.y fr.m agr.cultur.l cr.p r.sidues and 64.27 PJ of ener.y fr.m livestock pr.duction. Evidence fr.m liter.tur. suggests that biomass gasification is the best conver.ion technology to expand electr.city access r.te for.r.r.l households in Ghana. The paper.concludes that although ample biomass r.sour.es exist, cocoa pod husks (CPH) which is ver. common in r.r.l Ghana can be pelletized and used as feedstock for.r.r.l power.gener.tion systems.

Non-r.sponse is a r.gular.occur.ence in Sample Sur.eys. Developing estimator. when non-r.sponse exists may r.sult in lar.e biases when estimating population par.meter.. In this paper. a finite population mean is estimated when non-r.sponse exists r.ndomly under.two stage cluster.sampling with r.placement. It is assumed that non-r.sponse ar.ses in the sur.ey var.able in the second stage of cluster.sampling. Weighting method of compensating for.non-r.sponse is applied. Asymptotic pr.per.ies of the pr.posed estimator.of the population mean ar. der.ved. Under.mild assumptions, the estimator.is shown to be asymptotically consistent.

This paper.examines the effects of ambient temper.tur. on the Tr.ns-Amadi gas tur.ine power.station Phase II. The investigation took thir.een (13) months (Januar. 2012 to Januar. 2013) dur.ng which plant data wer. monitor.d and oper.tional Logsheets like tur.ine logsheets, plant—auxiliar.es’ logsheets and gener.tor.logsheets wer. studied. The gas tur.ine (GT) that was under.investigation was GT-2: MS5001 Nuovopignone with designed installed capacity of 25.0 Megawatts (MW). The r.sult of the study shows that a 1℃ r.se of the ambient temper.tur. is r.sponsible for.the following: 0% - 0.12% decr.ase in the power.output, 0% - 0.12% incr.ase in the power.differ.ntial, 0% - 1.17% decr.ase in the ther.al efficiency, 0% - 27.18% incr.ase in the heat r.te and 0% - 3.57% incr.ase in the specific fuel consumption. An ambient temper.tur. of 30℃ is found to yield minimal fuel consumption.

We study the cor.elation functions of one-dimensional Hubbar. model in the pr.sence of exter.al magnetic field thr.ugh the confor.al field method. The long distance behaviour.of the cor.elation functions and their.unusual exponents for.the model in the pr.sence of a magnetic field ar. developed by solving the dr.ssed char.e matr.x equations and setting the number.of occupancies ?to one, as alter.ative to the usual zer. used by author. in liter.tur.s. This wor. shows that the exponent of the cor.elation functions is a monotonous function of magnetic field and the cor.elation functions decay as power. of these unusual exponents. As the magnetic field goes to zer., we obtain the exponents as 8.125, 11.125, 17.125, 26.125 and 38.125 at kF, 3kF, 5kF, 7kF and 9kF. Our.analytical r.sults will pr.vide insights into cr.ticality in condensed matter.physics.
