Tree species identity and interaction determine vertical forest structure in young planted forests measured by terrestrial laser scanning

Vertical forest structure is closely linked to multiple ecosystem characteristics,such as biodiversity,habitat,and *** tree species in planted forests has the potential to create diverse vertical forest structures due to the different physiological and morphological traits of the composing tree ***,the relative importance of species richness,species identity and species interactions for the variation in vertical forest structure remains unclear,mainly because traditional forest inventories do not observe vertical stand structure in *** laser scanning(TLS),however,allows to study vertical forest structure in an unprecedented ***,we used TLS single scan data from 126 plots across three experimental planted forests of a largescale tree diversity experiment in Belgium to study the drivers of vertical forest *** plots were 9–11years old young pure and mixed forests,characterized by four levels of tree species richness ranging from monocultures to four-species mixtures,across twenty composition *** generated vertical plant profiles from the TLS data and derived six stand structural *** mixed models were used to test the effect of species richness on structural *** a hierarchical diversity interaction modelling framework,we further assessed species identity effect and various species interaction effects on the six stand structural *** results showed that species richness did not significantly influence most of the stand structure variables,except for canopy height and foliage height *** identity on the other hand exhibited a significant impact on vertical forest structure across all *** interaction effects were observed to be site-dependent due to varying site conditions and species pools,and rapidly growing tree species tend to dominate these ***,our results highlighted the importance of considering both species identity an

Eye on the Sky: A UAP research and Field Study off New York’s Long Island Coast

A ten-month field research study was meticulously conducted at robert Moses State park (rMSP) on the south shore of Long Island, NY. The objective was to determine if aerial phenomena of an unknown nature exist over a coastal location and to characterize their properties and behaviors. Primary and secondary field observation methods were utilized in this data-centric study. Forensic engineering principles and methodologies guided the study. The challenges set forward were object detection, observation, and characterization, where multispectral electro-optical devices and radar were employed due to limited visual acuity and intermittent presentation of the phenomena. The primary means of detection utilized a 3 cm X-band radar operating in two scan geometries, the X- and Y-axis. Multispectral electro-optical devices were utilized as a secondary means of detection and identification. Data was emphasized using HF and LF detectors and spectrum analyzers incorporating EM, ultrasonic, magnetic, and rF field transducers to record spectral data in these domains. Data collection concentrated on characterizing VIS, NIr, SWIr, LWIr, UVA, UVB, UVC, and the higher energy spectral range of ionizing radiation (alpha, beta, gamma, and X-ray) recorded by Geiger-Müller counters as well as special purpose semiconductor diode sensors.

The global physical and biogeochemical environment has been substantially altered in response to increased atmospheric greenhouse gases from human *** 2023,the sea surface temperature(SST)and upper 2000 m ocean heat content(OHC)reached record *** 0–2000 m OHC in 2023 exceeded that of 2022 by 15±10 ZJ(1 Zetta Joules=1021 Joules)(updated IAP/CAS data);9±5 ZJ(NCEI/NOAA data).The Tropical Atlantic Ocean,the Mediterranean Sea,and southern oceans recorded their highest OHC observed since the *** with the onset of a strong El Niño,the global SST reached its record high in 2023 with an annual mean of~0.23℃ higher than 2022 and an astounding>0.3℃ above 2022 values for the second half of *** density stratification and spatial temperature inhomogeneity indexes reached their highest values in 2023.

Applications of structural equation modeling(SEM)in ecological studies:an updated review

Aims:This review was developed to introduce the essential components and variants of structural equation modeling(SEM),synthesize the common issues in SEM applications,and share our views on SEM’s future in ecological ***:We searched the Web of Science on SEM applications in ecological studies from 1999 through 2016 and summarized the potential of SEMs,with a special focus on unexplored uses in *** also analyzed and discussed the common issues with SEM applications in previous publications and presented our view for its future ***:We searched and found 146 relevant publications on SEM applications in ecological *** found that five SEM variants had not commenly been applied in ecology,including the latent growth curve model,Bayesian SEM,partial least square SEM,hierarchical SEM,and variable/model *** identified ten common issues in SEM applications including strength of causal assumption,specification of feedback loops,selection of models and variables,identification of models,methods of estimation,explanation of latent variables,selection of fit indices,report of results,estimation of sample size,and the fit of ***:In previous ecological studies,measurements of latent variables,explanations of model parameters,and reports of key statistics were commonly overlooked,while several advanced uses of SEM had been ignored *** the increasing availability of data,the use of SEM holds immense potential for ecologists in the future.

Surgical excision of a large retroperitoneal lymphangioma: A case report

BACKGrOUND Lymphangiomas are rare benign tumors most commonly found in children under 2 years of age;adult cases are extremely *** lymphangiomas represent less than 1%of all *** of their benign nature and possibility of spontaneous resolution,lymphangiomas are sometimes left untreated for long periods of ***,if they grow large enough to compress surrounding structures,retroperitoneal lymphangiomas may cause symptoms such as abdominal pain,nausea or *** report a case of a rapidly growing retroperitoneal lymphangioma in an adult,treated with complete surgical *** SUMMArY A 60-year-old female who was diagnosed with an intra-abdominal cystic mass(11 cm×9.5 cm)seven years ago presented to our hospital with symptoms of early satiety,nausea,and intermittent abdominal *** tomography(CT)scan confirmed interval enlargement to a 24 cm×22 cm-sized huge left retroperitoneal mass,causing left hydronephrosis by external *** was done via long midline *** to severe adhesion between the aorta and the medial border of the mass,the cyst was intentionally opened for fluid aspiration and size *** suture closure of the opening,we proceeded carefully with *** showed light yellowish serous *** mass was excised completely,and the pathology was consistent with cystic *** post-operative period was uneventful,and the patient was discharged without ***-up CT scan one month after surgery confirmed complete removal of the mass and decreased left *** Excision of the huge retroperitoneal cystic mass resulted in relief of the patient’s symptoms,originally caused by external compression,and also ruled out the possibility of malignancy.

Acorn production in oak(Quercus spp.)shows considerable inter-annual variation,known as masting,which provides a natural defence against seed predators but a highly-variable supply of acorns for uses such as in commercial tree planting each *** emissions of greenhouse gases have been very widely reported to influence plant growth and seed or fruit size and quantity via the‘fertilisation effect’that leads to enhanced *** examine if acorn production in mature woodland communities will be affected by further increase in CO_(2),the contents of litter traps from a Free Air Carbon Enrichment(FACE)experiment in deciduous woodland in central England were analysed for numbers of flowers and acorns of pedunculate oak(Quercus robur L.)at different stages of development and their predation levels under ambient and elevated CO_(2) ***-annual variation in acorn numbers was considerable and cyclical between 2015 and 2021,with the greatest numbers of mature acorns in 2015,2017 and 2020 but almost none in *** numbers of flowers,enlarged cups,immature acorns,empty acorn cups,and galls in the litter traps also varied amongst years;comparatively high numbers of enlarged cups were recorded in 2018,suggesting *** at this site is a fruit maturation masting species(i.e.,the extent of abortion of pollinated flowers during acorn development affects mature acorn numbers greatly).raising the atmospheric CO_(2) concentration by 150μL L^(−1),from early 2017,increased the numbers of immature acorns,and all acorn evidence(empty cups+immature acorns+mature acorns)detected in the litter traps compared to ambient controls by 2021,but did not consistently affect the numbers of flowers,enlarged cups,empty cups,or mature *** number of flowers in the elevated CO_(2) plots’litter traps was greater in 2018 than 2017,one year after CO_(2) enrichment began,whereas numbers declined in ambient *** with CO_(2) also increased the number o

Background：Musculoskeletal disorders（MSD） comprise a wide range of conditions,associated with an enormous pain and impaired mobility,and are affecting people＇s lives and *** of musculoskeletal disorders typically involves a multidisciplinary team *** findings have been found in previous studies evaluating the effectiveness of complementary therapies,though little attention has been paid to evaluating of the effectiveness of integrated packages of care combining conventional and complementary approaches for musculoskeletal conditions in a National Health Service（NHS） ***：To determine the feasibility of all aspects of a pragmatic observational study designed：（1） to evaluate the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of integrated treatments for MSDs in an integrated NHS hospital in the UK;（2） to determine the acceptability of the study design and research process to patients;（3） to explore patients＇ expectation and experience of receiving integrated ***：This is an observational feasibility study,with 1-year recruitment and 1-year follow-up,conducted in royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine,University College London Hospital Trust,*** eligible patients with MSDs newly referred to the hospital were included in the *** are integrated packages of care（conventional and complementary） as currently provided in the ***-36 Health Survey,short form Brief Pain Inventory,Visual Analogue Scale,and modified Client Service receipt Inventory will be assessed at 4/5 time ***-structured interview/focus group will be carried out before treatment,and 1 year after commence of ***：We intend to conduct a pragmatic observational study of integrated medical treatment of MSDs at a public sector *** will inform the design of a future trial including recruitment,retention,suitability of the outcome measures and patients experiences.
