Integrating global land cover products for improved forest cover characterization: an application in North America

Six widely used coarse-resolution global land cover data-sets–Global Land Cover Characterization(GLCC),Global Land Cover 2000(GLC2000),GlobCover land cover product(GlobCover),MoDIS land cover product(MoDIS LC),the University of Maryland land cover product(UMD LC),and the MoDIS Vegetation Continuous Fields tree cover layer(MoDIS VCF)disagree substantially in their estimates of forest *** a regression tree model trained on higher-resolution,Landsat-based data,these multisource multiresolution maps were integrated for an improved characterization of forest cover over North *** using a withheld test sample,the integrated percent forest cover(IPFC)data-set has a root mean square error of 11.75%–substantially better than the 17.37% of GLCC,17.61% of GLC2000,17.96% of GlobCover,15.23% of MoDIS LC,19.25%of MoDIS VCF,and 15.15%of UMD LC,*** demonstrated for forest,this approach based on integration of multiple products has potential for improved characterization of other land cover types as well.

Sub-Saharan Africa is currently undergoing an epidemiological transition from a disease burden largely attributable to communicable diseases to that resulting from a combination of both communicable and chronic non-communicable *** on chronic disease incidence,lifestyle,environmental and genetic risk factors are sparse in this *** report aimed at providing relevant information in respect to risk factors that increase blood pressure and lead to development of intermediate cardiovascular *** presented the rationale,objectives and key methodological features of the Nigerian Population Research on Environment,Gene and Health（NIPREGH） *** challenges encountered in carrying out population study in this part of the world and the approaches at surmounting them were also *** preliminary data as at 20 November 2013 showed that out of the 205 individuals invited starting from early April 2013,160（72 women） consented and were enrolled;giving a response rate of 78%.Participants＇ age ranged from 18 to 80 years,with a mean（SD） of 39.8（12.4） years and they were of 34 different ethnic groups spread over 24 states out of the 36 states that constitute *** mean（SD） of office and home blood pressures were 113.0（15.2） mm Hg systolic,73.5（12.5） mm Hg diastolic and 117.3（15.0） mm Hg systolic,and 76.0（9.6） mm Hg diastolic,***-three（26.8%） participants were hypertensive and 8（5.0%） were *** addition to having the unique potential of recruiting a cohort that is a true representative of the entire Nigerian population,NIPREGH is feasible and the objectives realisable.

Multiple Myeloma(MM)is a common haematological malignancy that is associated with a high rate of venous thromboembolism(VTE)with almost 10% of patients suffering thrombosis during their disease *** studies have shown that,despite current thromboprophylaxis strategies,VTE rates in MM remain disappointingly *** pathophysiology behind this consistently high rate of VTE is likely multifactorial.A number of factors such as anti-thrombin deficiency or raised coagulation Factor VIII levels may confer resistance to heparin in these patients,however,the optimal method of clinically evaluating this is unclear at present,though some groups have attempted its characterisation with thrombin generation testing(TGT).In addition to testing for heparin resistance,TGT in patients with MM has shown markedly varied abnormalities in both endogenous thrombin potential and serum thrombomodulin *** from these thrombin-mediated processes,other mechanisms potentially contributing to thromboprophylaxis failure include activated protein C resistance,endothelial toxicity secondary to chemotherapy agents,tissue factor abnormalities and the effect of immunoglobulins/“M-proteins”on both the endothelium and on fibrin fibre *** thus appears clear that there are a multitude of factors contributing to the prothrombotic milieu seen in MM and further work is necessitated to elucidate which factors may directly affect and inhibit response to anticoagulation and which factors are contributing in a broader fashion to the hypercoagulability phenotype observed in these patients so that effective thromboprophylaxis strategies can be employed.

AIM： To evaluate how proximal colon polyps interpreted as hyperplastic polyps in 2001 would be interpreted by expert pathologists in 2007.METHoDS： ≥ 5 mm in interpreted pathologists 2007 by 3 GI Forty consecutive proximal colon polyps size, removed in 2001, and originally as hyperplastic polyps by general at Indiana University, were reviewed in pathologists.CoNCLUSIoN： Many polyps interpreted as hyperplastic in 2001 were considered sessile serrated lesions by GI pathologists in 2007, but there is substantial inter-observer variation amongst GI pathologists.

We reported magnetooptical properties of Eu3＋（4f（6）） and Tb3＋（4f（8）） in single crystals of Gd3Ga5o12 （GGG）, Y3Ga5o12 （YGG）, and Eu3＋（4f（6）） in Eu3Ga5o12 （EuGG） for both ions occupying sites of D2 symmetry in the garnet structure. Absorption, luminescence, and magnetic circular polarization of luminescence （MCPL） spectra of Tb3＋ in GGG and YGG and absorption and magnetic circular dichroism （MCD） of Eu3＋ in EuGG were studied. The data were obtained at 85 K and room temperature （RT）. Magnetic susceptibility of Eu3＋ in EuGG was also measured between 85 K and RT. The magnetooptical and magnetic susceptibility data were modeled using the wavefunctions of the crystal-field split energy （Stark） levels of Eu3＋ and Tb3＋ occupying D2 sites in the same garnets. The results reported gave a precise determination of these Stark level assignments and confirmed the symmetry labels （irreducible representations） of the closely-spaced Stark levels （quasi-doublets） found in the 5D1 （Eu3＋） and 5D4 （Tb3＋） multiplets. Ultraviolet （UV） excitation （300 nm） of the 6PJ and 6IJ states of Gd3＋ in the doped GGG crystals led to emission from 5D4 （Tb3＋） and 5D1 and 5D0 （Eu3＋） through radiationless energy transfer to the 4f（n–1）5d band of Tb3＋ and to UV quintet states of Eu3＋. The temperature-dependent emission line shapes and line shifts of the magnetooptical transitions excited by UV radiation suggested a novel way to explore energy transfer mechanisms in this rare-earth doped garnet system.

New neurons are integrated into the circuitry of the olfactory bulb throughout the lifespan in the mamma- lian brain--including in humans. These new neurons are born in the subventricular zone and subsequently mature as they are guided over long distances via the rostral migratory stream through mechanisms we are only just beginning to understand. Regeneration after brain injury is very limited, and although some neuroblasts from the rostral migratory stream will leave the path and migrate toward cortical lesion sites, this neuronal replacement is generally not sustained and therefore does not provide enough new neurons to alleviate functional deficits. Using newly discovered microtissue engineering techniques, we have built the first self-contained, implantable constructs that mimic the architecture and function of the rostral migratory stream. This engineered microtissue emulates the dense cord-like bundles of astrocytic somata and processes that are the hallmark anatomical feature of the glial tube. As such, our living microtissue-en- gineered rostral migratory stream can serve as an in vitro test bed for unlocking the secrets of neuroblast migration and maturation, and may potentially serve as a living transplantable construct derived from a patient＇s own cells that can redirect their own neuroblasts into lesion sites for sustained neuronal replace- ment following brain injury or neurodegenerative disease. In this paper, we summarize the development of fabrication methods for this microtissue-engineered rostral migratory stream and provide proof-of-princi- ple evidence that it promotes and directs migration of immature neurons.

This article reviews a selected set of recently described pregnancy-associated proteins which possess potential for both signaling pregnancy onset and monitoring its course. These molecules are compared and contrasted with human chorionic gonadotropin, the first pregnancy-associated protein to be discovered, and the standard biomarker of pregnancy to which all others must still be referenced. Recent advances in hCG research have focused on the structural determination and diagnostic significance of the subunits and fragments of the hCG molecule, particularly in urine. An outline of the potential utility of this approach is also presented.
