Characterizing drought in California:new drought indices and scenario-testing in support of resource management

Introduction:California’s recent drought(2012–2016)has implications throughout the state for natural resource management and adaptation planning and has generated many discussions about drought characterization and *** study characterizes drought conditions with two indices describing deficits in natural water supply and increases in landscape stress developed on the basis of water balance modeling,at a fine spatial scale to assess the variation in conditions across the entire state,and provides an in-depth evaluation for the Russian River basin in northern California to address local resource management by developing extreme drought scenarios for consideration in planning and ***:We employed the USGS Basin Characterization Model to characterize drought on the basis of water supply(a measure of recharge plus runoff)and landscape stress(climatic water deficit).These were applied to the state and to the Russian River basin where antecedent soil moisture conditions were evaluated and extreme drought scenarios were developed and run through a water management and reservoir operations model to further explore impacts on water ***:Drought indices indicated that as of the end of water year 2016 when reservoirs were full,additional water supply and landscape replenishment of up to three average years of precipitation in some locations was needed to return to normal *** soil conditions in the Russian River were determined to contribute to very different water supply results for different years and were necessary to understand to anticipate proper watershed response to *** drought scenarios manifested very different kinds of drought and recovery and characterization helps to guide the management response to ***:These scenarios and indices illustrate how droughts differ with regard to water supply and landscape stress and how long warm droughts recover much more slowly than short very dry dro

AIM: To study the structure-activity relationship of alkyl 9-nitrocamptothecin esters. METHODS: Two alkyl 9-nitrocamptothecin (9NC) esters 5g and 5h were prepared by esterification reactions of 9NC with valeric anhydride and heptanoic anhydride, respectively. Eight 9NC esters 5a-5h were tested for cytotoxicity against human leukemia cell lines HL-60 and U-937. Flow cytometry analysis was used to identify the cell cycle phase targeted by the esters and quantify the extent of ester-induced cell death (apoptosis). RESULTS: Esters 5b and 5c demonstrated great abilities to inhibit growth of the leukemia cells followed by induction of apoptosis; esters 5a, 5e, and 5g induced slight perturbations in the cell cycle at high concentrations; and esters 5d, 5f, and 5h were completely inactive against the cell lines tested. Thus these esters showed the cell anti-proliferative activity in an order of 5b≈5c>5a≈5e≈5g>5d≈5f≈5h. Esters 5b, 5c, and 5e were tested in vivo against various human carcinomas in nude mice grown as xenografts. Only 5b and 5c showed a significant antitumor activity. Particularly, ester 5b demonstrated an antitumor activity against a broad spectrum of human carcinomas including breast, lung, colon, pancreas, stomach, ovarian, and melanoma, etc. CONCLUSION: These esters act like prodrugs of their parental 9-nitrocamptothecin. High drug doses need to be administered to animals in order to inhibit growth, and induce regression, of human tumor xenografts in nude mice. These compounds may be developed into potent anticancer drugs due to their low toxicity.

Geochemical and mineralogical studies were performed in the La Pesca(LP)and Tesoro Altamira(TA)beach sediments,located in the Tamaulipas state,northern Gulf of *** main aim of this study is to infer the weathering history and provenance and to discriminate the tectonic environment of the beach *** sediments are composed of quartz with small amounts of accessory minerals such as plagioclase,calcite,orthoclase,microcline,and *** beach sediments are classified as fine-grained and very well sorted,however LP has coarse skewed and leptokurtic sediments,whereas TA has fine-skewed and very leptokurtic *** chemical index of weathering(CIW’)indicates intense weathering in the source *** quartz grain microtextures in the LP and TA are classified into mechanical,chemical,and mechanical/chemical *** features such as fractures,pits,percussion marks,abrasion fatigue,and V-shaped marks favor high-energy littoral,fluvial,subaqueous-marine,and aeolian *** chemical features indicate solution pits and crystalline overgrowth,which suggests a silica saturated marine *** mechanical/chemical features display adhering particles and elongated depressions suggest formation in a sub-aqueous nearshore marine *** and trace elements-based provenance discrimination diagrams indicate a felsic source derived from the Mesa Central(MC),Sierra Madre Oriental(SMOr)and Oaxaquia *** major and trace element concentrations imply a passive margin setting for the northern Gulf of Mexico,which is consistent with the general geology.

A comparative study of Salvia miltiorrhiza Radix & Rhizoma raw material and granule products using chromatographic analysis and antioxidant activity

Objective: Granules of herbal extracts are a popular medicinal preparation consumed in traditional Chinese medicine clinical practice. However, their quality and efficacy evaluation are lacking. This study aimed to compare the quality and anti-oxidant activity of Dan Shen(Salvia miltiorrhiza Radix & Rhizoma)granule extracts with their herbal ***: Chromatographic method was used to determine the content of 7 marker compounds in the water extracts of the herb compared to that of 12 granule extracts. Agglomerative hierarchical clustering(AHC) and principal component analysis(PCA) distinguished the herbal and granule extracts based on the content of the marker compounds. The antioxidant activities of herbal and granule extracts were evaluated by 2, 2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenz-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)(ABTS), organic chemical compound 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power(FRAP) ***: The herbal extracts group showed significantly higher contents of salvianolic acid B, sodium danshensu and cryptotanshinone compared with that of the granule group. This corresponded to significantly higher ABTS, DPPH and FRAP(P <.05) activities of the herbal extracts. The AHC and PCA analysis distinguished granule extracts from most herbal extracts predominantly by the content of salvianolic acid ***: The results confirm the need for the assessment of granule products so that healthcare practitioners and consumers are better informed of their quality and efficacy.

Task-Specific Feature Selection and Detection Algorithms for IoT-Based Networks

As IoT devices become more ubiquitous, the security of IoT-based networks becomes paramount. Machine Learning-based cybersecurity enables autonomous threat detection and prevention. However, one of the challenges of applying Machine Learning-based cybersecurity in IoT devices is feature selection as most IoT devices are resource-constrained. This paper studies two feature selection algorithms: Information Gain and PSO-based, to select a minimum number of attack features, and Decision Tree and SVM are utilized for performance comparison. The consistent use of the same metrics in feature selection and detection algorithms substantially enhances the classification accuracy compared to the non-consistent use in feature selection by Information Gain (entropy) and Tree detection algorithm by classification. Furthermore, the Tree with consistent feature selection is comparable to the ensemble that provides excellent performance at the cost of computation complexity.

Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition(EMT) can be a pivotal event in the acquisition of invasive and metastatic phenotypes by tumor cells of epithelial ***8,a potential tumor suppressor,is frequently down-regulated in solid tumors and its overexpression induces tumor cell ***,we identify a new role for CMTM8 in regulating tumor cell *** CMTM8 expression in HepG2 human hepatocellular carcinoma cells results in the acquisition of EMT-like features,including a morphology change from organized epithelial sheets to scattered fibroblast-like shapes,reduction of epithelial markers,and increased invasive and migratory *** phenotypic changes are mediated in large part by the ERK-MAPK pathway as the MEK inhibitor,U0126,and shRNA-mediated knockdown of ERK2 significantly reversed the *** binding to the c-MET receptor is known to induce EMT in HepG2 *** find that CMTM8 knockdown in HepG2 cells induces c-MET signaling and ERK *** of c-MET signaling with a small molecule inhibitor SU11274 or c-MET RNAi blocks the EMT-like changes following CMTM8 ***,CMTM8 overexpression inhibits HGF-induced c-MET phosphorylation,EMT-like morphological changes,and cell motility.

Occurrence of Anguilla luzonensis in the Tributaries along the Lagonoy Gulf,Philippines

Anguillids areаvaluable fish commodity *** Anguilla luzonensis have been abundantly found in the northern Philippines and collected for trade,no available records show that it recruited in the mid-part where Lagonoy Gulf,Bicol is *** this study,we investigated the occurrence of *** in the tributaries along the Lagonoy Gulf,Philippines using molecular *** eel specimens were collected in 2018-2019 from the Comun river,Albay;the Lagonoy river,Camarines Sur;and the Bato river,*** luzonensis was first reported in Lagonoy Gulf using molecular *** was the second most abundant species in the Comun and Lagonoy rivers(9.5 and 22.4%,respectively).Anguilla luzonensis collected from the Comun and Lagonoy rivers did not show a significant difference(FST=0.00825,p>0.05).Anguilla marmorata was the most dominant species in all tributaries(71.1-98.0%).In the Comun and Lagonoy rivers,*** pacifica was the third most abundant species(7.7 and 6.5%,respectively).In addition,Anguilla celebesensis was only found rarely in the Comun river(0.9%).This study provides important information for sustainable resource management and effective utilization of the eel species in these regions.
