Time-series prediction of shellfish farm closure: A comparison of alternatives

Shellfish farms are closed for harvest when microbial pollutants are *** pollutants are typically present in rainfall runoff from various land uses in *** currently use a number of observable parameters(river flow,rainfall,salinity)as proxies to determine when to close *** have proposed using the short term historical rainfall data as a time-series prediction problem where we aim to predict the closure of shellfish farms based only on ***-series event prediction consists of two steps:(i)feature extraction,and(ii)prediction.A number of data mining challenges exist for these scenarios:(i)which feature extraction method best captures the rainfall pattern over successive days that leads to opening or closure of the farms?,(ii)The farm closure events occur infrequently and this leads to a class imbalance problem;the question is what is the best way to deal with this problem?In this paper we have analysed and compared different combinations of balancing methods(under-sampling and over-sampling),feature extraction methods(cluster profile,curve fitting,Fourier Transform,Piecewise Aggregate Approximation,and Wavelet Transform)and learning algorithms(neural network,support vector machine,k-nearest neighbour,decision tree,and Bayesian Network)to predict closure events accurately considering the above data mining *** have identified the best combination of techniques to accurately predict shellfish farm closure from rainfall,given the above data mining challenges.

Background: Esthesioneuroblastoma, a rare tumour of the nasal vault, can present with symptoms that can be mistaken for common conditions such as chronic rhinosinusitis or recurrent epistaxis. Case presentation: A 52-year-old, previously healthy, Caucasian female presented to the emergency room with two months of nasal congestion and a spontaneous, protracted nosebleed that required a nasal clamp to settle. In the following months she had another episode of epistaxis in addition to fatigue, headaches, anosmia, difficulty breathing, worsening vision, weight loss and behavioral changes. Subsequent investigations led to the diagnosis of esthesioneuroblastoma. Conclusion: When patients present with recurrent epistaxis or chronic rhinosinusitis that does not respond to a reasonable course of medical therapy and/or have atypical associated symptoms, further investigations should be considered. The presences of red flags, such as weight loss, severe headaches, vision changes or bizarre behavior are also clues that alternate diagnoses and further additional workup should be considered.

Sediment yield dynamics on the Edwards Plateau region of Texas was dramatically influenced by a multi-year drought that occurred there during the 1950s. To assess the effect of this drought on sediment yield, we used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to identify the factors that contributed erosion and to propose potential mitigation measures in case of future drought recurrence. The basins of interest to this study were Brady Creek One (BC 1) and Deep Creek Three (DC 3), located in mcculloch County, Texas. Although the streams in these basins are not gauged, the land cover and reservoir sediment budgets have been assessed in a past study. Calibration of SWAT flow simulation was accomplished using parameter transfer from a gauging station located in San Saba River. The results showed that sediment yield from storms above 60 mm was five times more during and immediately after drought period than during continuous wet seasons. Approximately half of the total drought period sediment yield was from five major rainstorms. The multi-year drought coupled with historical high grazing intensity resulted in significant loss of plant cover, which was considered critical in determining erosion and sedimentation rates. To test this hypothesis, the model was run for the periods of high land cover (1990s) using the 1950s multi-year drought data which showed that sediment yield was 24% of that simulated for 1950s land cover. It was concluded that maintenance of surface cover could play a critical role associated with multi-year drought extreme events.
