Risk factors for Barrett’s oesophagus and oesophageal adenocarcinoma:Results from the FINBAR study

AIM:To investigate risk factors associated with Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal ***:This all-Ireland population-based case-control study recruited 224 Barrett's oesophagus patients,227 oesophageal adenocarcinoma patients and 260 *** participants underwent a structured interview with information obtained about potential lifestyle and environmental risk ***:Gastro-oesophageal reflux was associated with Barrett's [OR 12.0(95% CI 7.64-18.7)] and oesophageal adenocarcinoma [OR 3.48(95% CI 2.25-5.41)].Oesophageal adenocarcinoma patients were more likely than controls to be ex-or current smokers [OR 1.72(95% CI 1.06-2.81)and OR 4.84(95% CI 2.72-8.61)respectively] and to have a high body mass index [OR 2.69(95% CI 1.62-4.46)].No significant associations were observed between these risk factors and Barrett's *** but not vegetables were negatively associated with oesophageal adenocarcinoma [OR 0.50(95% CI 0.30-0.86)].CONCLUSION:A high body mass index,a diet low in fruit and cigarette smoking may be involved in the progression from Barrett's oesophagus to oesophageal adenocarcinoma.

AIM: To further define variables associated with increased incidences of severe toxicities following administration of yttrium-90 (90Y) ***: Fifty-eight patients undergoing 79 treatments were retrospectively assessed for development of clinical and laboratory toxicity incidence following 90Y administration. Severe toxicity events were defined using Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 4.03 and defined as grade ≥ 3. Univariate logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the effect of different factors on the incidence of severe toxicity events. Multicollinearity was assessed for all factors with P 90Y microsphere therapy.

Background The timing of behavior and habitat use of nocturnal animals can be influenced by the lunar cycle in nature. The prevalence of artificial light at night(ALAN) has been recognized as a source of environmental pol-lution. The interaction between ALAN and the lunar cycle on bat behavior is important for understanding anthro-pogenic effects on bats. We utilized a decade(2012–2022) of acoustic monitoring data collected in North Carolina, United States, to investigate the relationship between bat activity, lunar cycle, and light pollution. We examined whether the amount of lunar illumination affected species-specific nightly activity and whether hourly bat activity patterns varied between nights with different moon phases. We further investigated if the relationship between bat activity and the lunar cycle might be altered by light *** We found that seven bat species showed activity variation across nights in relation to the amount of moon illumination when ALAN was absent. In general, bats were less active on full moon nights compared to new moon nights. Light pollution interacted with the bat–lunar relationship in five of the seven species, masking the effect of the lunar cycle. We identified delayed bat activity patterns on nights with a full or waxing moon in seven species, and light pollution altered that pattern in four species. Overall, ALAN was associated with decreased bat activity inde-pendent of lunar cycle *** Our study demonstrated that at a broad spatial scale, ALAN negatively affected many North American temperate bat species and altered their lunar chronobiology. As light pollution is spreading to historically dark areas and habitats, ALAN might couple with other threats, such as the white-nose syndrome or climate change, to cause cascading damage in the environment that depends on ecosystem services such as pest control provided by bats. Tungsten ditelluride(WTe_(2))is a layered transition metal dichalcogenide(TMD)that has attracted increasing research inter-est in recent ***_(2) has demonstrated large non-saturating magnetoresistance,potential for spintronic applications and promise as a type-II Weyl *** majority of works on WTe_(2) have relied on mechanically exfoliated flakes from chemical vapour transport(CVT)-grown crystals for their *** producing high-quality samples,this method is hindered by several disadvantages including long synthesis time,high-temperature annealing and an inherent lack of *** this work,a synthesis method is demonstrated that allows the production of large-area polycrystalline films of WTe_(2).This is achieved by the reaction of pre-deposited films of W and Te at a relatively low temperature of 550℃.Sputter X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals the rapid but self-limiting nature of the oxidation of these WTe_(2) films in ambient *** WTe_(2) films are composed of areas of micrometre-sized nanobelts that can be isolated and offer potential as an alternative to CVT-grown *** nanobelts are highly crystalline with low defect densities indicated by transmission electron microscopy and show promising initial electrical results.

Acute and chronic lateral ankle instability are common in high-demand patient populations. If not managed appropriately, patients may experience recurrent instability, chronic pain, osteochondral lesions of the talus, premature osteoarthritis, and other significantlong-term disability. Certain populations, including young athletes, military personnel and those involved in frequent running, jumping, and cutting motions, are at increased risk. Proposed risk factors include prior ankle sprain, elevated body weight or body mass index, female gender, neuromuscular deficits, postural imbalance, foot/ankle malalignment, and exposure to at-risk athletic activity. Prompt, accurate diagnosis is crucial, and evidence-based, functional rehabilitation regimens have a proven track record in returning active patients to work and sport. When patients fail to improve with physical therapy and external bracing, multiple surgical techniques have been described with reliable results, including both anatomic and nonanatomic reconstructive methods. Anatomic repair of the lateral ligamentous complex remains the gold standard for recurrent ankle instability, and it effectively restores native ankle anatomy and joint kinematics while preserving physiologic ankle and subtalar motion. Further preventative measures may minimize the risk of ankle instability in athletic cohorts, including prophylactic bracing and combined neuromuscular and proprioceptive training programs. These interventions have demonstrated benefit in patients at heightened risk for lateral ankle sprain and allow active cohorts to return to full activity without adversely affecting athletic performance.

The response of a 14 MeV neutron-based prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) system,*** prompt gamma-rays count rate and the average thermal neutron flux,is studied with a large concrete sample and with a homogeneous large sample,which is made of polyethylene and metal with various concentrations of hydrogen and cadmium using the mcNP-5 (Monte Carlo N-Particle) *** average thermal neutron flux is determined by the analysis of the prompt gamma-rays using the thermal neutron activation of hydrogen in the sample,and the thermal and fast neutron activation of carbon graphite irradiation chamber of the *** results demonstrated that the graphite irradiation chamber of the PGNAA-system fairly operates,and is useful to estimate the average thermal neutron flux of large samples with various compositions irradiated by 14 MeV neutrons.
