AIM： To investigate the etiology, diagnosis, management and outcome of epiphora referrals to an oculoplastic ***： Retrospective chart review of patients referred for epiphora to an oculoplastic clinic between 2005 and 2009. Patient demographics, past history, ophthalmic examination, treatment and outcome were ***： There were 237 subjects with a primary complaint of epiphora. They included 130 （55%） females and 107 （45%） males with an average age of 55.9±25.9y. The most common cause of epiphora was lacrimal obstruction （46%）; followed by multifactorial epiphora （22%）, reflex tearing （22%） and eyelid malposition （11%）. Differences in prevalence of etiology were noted in terms of age and gender distribution. Of the 182 （77%） patients who returned for follow up, 41 （23%） reported a complete resolution and 102 （56%） reported a significant improvement in their ***： Epiphora is a common condition with many causes. A thorough history and examination are required to provide the appropriate treatment tailored to the underlying cause.

The purpose of this study was to determine a suitable model for investigating the effects of climate factors on the area burned by forest fire in the Tahe forest region, Daxing＇an Mountains, in northeast China. The response variables were the area burned by lightning- caused fire, human-caused fire, and total burned area. The predictor variables were nine climate variables collected from the local weather station. Three regression models were utilized, including multiple linear regression, log- linear model （log-transformation on both response and predictor variables）, and gamma-generalized linear model. The goodness-of-fit of the models were compared based on model fitting statistics such as R2, AIC, and RMSE. The results revealed that the gamma-generalized linear model was generally superior to both multiple linear regressionmodel and log-linear model for fitting the fire data. Further, the best models were selected based on the criteria that the climate variables were statistically significant at at = 0.05. The gamma best models indicated that maximum wind speed, precipitation, and days that rainfall greater than 0.1 mm had significant impacts on the area burned by the lightning-caused fire, while the mean temperature and minimum relative humidity were the .main drivers of the burned area caused by human activities. Overall, the total burned area by forest fire was significantly influenced by days that rainfall greater than 0.1 mm and minimum rela- tive humidity, indicating that the moisture condition of forest stands determine the burned area by forest fire.

In January 2010, the Suining Ms5.0 earthquake occurred in central Sichuan Basin, with the epicenter in Moxi-Longnvsi structural belt and a focal depth of 10 km. Based on structural interpretations of seismic profiles in this area, we recognized a regional detachment fault located at a depth of 9-10 km in the Presinian basement of the Suining area, transferring its slipping from NW to SE orientation. This detachment fault slipped from NW to SE, and underwent several shears and bends, which caused the basement to be rolled in and the overlaying strata fold deformation. It formed a fault-bend fold in the Moxi area with an approximate slip of 4 km. Correspondingly, the formation of the Moxi anticline is related to the detachment fault. With the earthquake＇s epicenter on the ramp of the detachment fault, there is a new point of view that the Suining earthquake was caused by re-activation of this basement detachment fault. Since the Late Jurassic period, under the influence of regional tectonic stress, the detachment fault transfered its slip from the Longmen Mountains （LMS） thrust belt to the hinterland of the Sichuan Basin, and finally to the piedmont zone of southwest Huayingshan （HYS）, which indicates that HYS might be the final front area of the LMS thrust belt.

Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction(ECR)is an attractive pathway to synthesize useful fuels and chemical feedstocks,especially when paired with renewable electricity as the energy *** this overview,we examine the recently witnessed advances and on-going pursuits of ECR in terms of the key fundamental mechanisms,basic experimentation principles,electrocatalysts and the electrochemical setup for ECR,aiming at offering timely key insights into solving the unsettled bottleneck *** reaction pathways are discussed in relation to the generation of single-,double-and multi-carbon products by the ECR,as well as the underlying principles in catalyst design to form them both efficiently and *** the rational design of electrocatalysis,we look into the critically important roles played by various in situ and operando experimental techniques and computational simulations,where the key priorities are to engineer the highly active and selec-tive ECR catalysts for the specifically targeted ***,with the purposely designed high activity and selectivity,one would be able to“magically”transform a bottle of CO_(2)-riched“coke drink”to a glass of“beer”with the desired alcohol product in a layman term,instead of a bottle of formic ***,there are still considerable complications and challenges *** a dynamically rapid-advancing research frontier for both energy and the environment,there are great opportunities and obstacles in the ECR scale up.

Comparison of six generalized linear models for occurrence of lightning-induced fires in northern Daxing'an Mountains,China

The occurrence of lightning-induced forest fires during a time period is count data featuring over-dispersion （i.e., variance is larger than mean） and a high frequency of zero counts. In this study, we used six generalized linear models to examine the relationship between the occurrence of lightning-induced forest fires and meteorological factors in the Northern Daxing＇an Mountains of China. The six models included Poisson, negative binomial （NB）, zero- inflated Poisson （ZIP）, zero-inflated negative binomial （ZINB）, Poisson hurdle （PH）, and negative binomial hurdle （NBH） models. Goodness-of-fit was compared and tested among the six models using Akaike information criterion （AIC）, sum of squared errors, likelihood ratio test, and Vuong test. The predictive performance of the models was assessed and compared using independent validation data by the data-splitting method. Based on the model AIC, the ZINB model best fitted the fire occurrence data, followed by （in order of smaller AIC） NBH, ZIP, NB, PH, and Poisson models. The ZINB model was also best for pre- dicting either zero counts or positive counts （〉1）. The two Hurdle models （PH and NBH） were better than ZIP, Poisson, and NB models for predicting positive counts, but worse than these three models for predicting zero counts. Thus, the ZINB model was the first choice for modeling the occurrence of lightning-induced forest fires in this study, which implied that the excessive zero counts of lightning- induced fires came from both structure and sampling zeros.

Shale gas resources have been regarded as a viable energy source, and it is of great significance to characterize the shale composition of different cements, such as quartz and dolomite. In this research, chemical analysis and the multifractal method have been used to study the mineral compositions and petrophysical structures of cements in shale samples from the Longmaxi Formation, China. X-ray diffraction, electron microprobe, field emission scanning electron microscopy, cathodoluminescence microscopy and C-O isotope analyses confirmed that cements in the Longmaxi Formation shales are mainly composed of Fe-bearing dolomite and quartz. Fe-bearing dolomite cements concentrate around dolomite as annuli, filling micron-sized inorganic primary pores. Quartz cements in the form of nanoparicles fill primary inter-crystalline pores among clay minerals. Theoretical calculation shows that the Fe-bearing dolomite cements formed slightly earlier than the quartz cements, but both were related to diagenetic illitization of smectite. Moreover, multifractal analysis reveals that the quartz cements are more irregularly distributed in pores than the Fe-bearing dolomite cements. These results suggest that the plugging effect of the quartz cements on the primary inoraganic pore structures is the dominant factor resulting in low interconnected porosity of shales, which are unfavorable for the enrichment of shale gas.

Biotic Homogenization Caused by the Invasion of Solidago canadensis in China

Although studies argue that invasive species can cause biotic differentiation, some cases show that biological invasions actually decrease biodiversity through biotic homogenization. The concept of biotic homogenization through the invasion of a certain serious invasive plant species merit more studies. Hence, we used field surveys to quantitatively compare invasive populations of Solidago canadensis （SC） in China with the control sites （adjacent sites to SC present sites yet without the species） and SC native populations in the USA. We found that plant communities in SC invaded habitats shared similarities with those in SC native ranges. Bray-Curtis similarity clearly showed that the composition of plant communities in SC invaded habitats were similar to those in SC native ranges. Both in the native and introduced range, plant communities with SC present were characterized by SC being dominant, significantly lower species richness, or-diversity and p-diversity, as well as a decrease in the correlation coefficient between geographic distance and floristic similarities. SC favors fertile and moist loam habitat, while it dominated in various habitats in China, where more than 20 different dominants should have occurred. In conclusion, serious invasive species can quickly remodel and homogenize diverse communities by dominating them.

Application of nanoparticle tracking analysis for characterising the fate of engineered nanoparticles in sediment-water systems

Novel applications of nanotechnology may lead to the release of engineered nanoparticles（ENPs）, which result in concerns over their potential environmental hazardous impact. It is essential for the research workers to be able to quantitatively characterise ENPs in the environment and subsequently to assist the risk assessment of the ENPs. This study hence explored the application of nanoparticle tracking system（NTA） to quantitatively describe the behaviour of the ENPs in natural sediment-water systems. The NTA allows the measurement of both particle number concentration（PNC） and particle size distribution（PSD） of the ENPs. The developed NTA method was applied to a range of gold and magnetite ENPs with a selection of surface properties. The results showed that the positively-charged ENPs interacted more strongly with the sediment than neutral and negatively-charged ENPs. It was also found that the citrate coated Au ENPs had a higher distribution percentage（53%） than 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid coated Au ENPs（20%） and citrate coated magnetite ENPs（21%）. The principles of the electrostatic interactions between hard（and soft） acids and bases（HSAB） are used to explain such behaviours; the hard base coating（i.e. citrate ions） will interact more strongly with hard acid（i.e. magnetite） than soft acid（i.e. gold）.The results indicate that NTA is a complementary method to existing approaches to characterise the fate and behaviour of ENPs in natural sediment.
