Drawing on the em.irical work of a broader study, this paper exam.nes whether technology is being successfully transferred from.universities to the IT-sottware Sm.s present in China, and the effectiveness of entrepreneurship in effecting such transfers. A conceptual fram.work was generated to guide the investigation. Data were elicited using a detailed questionnaire which generated 53 usable responses; follow-up interviews with 17 of the 53 respondents; and four interviews with relevant governm.nt officials （civil servants from.the m.nistry of Science and Technology and state-owned banks）. There were three m.in fm.ings. Chinese software Sm.s tend to be reluctant to adopt new technologies from.local tm.versities; there is a lack of com.on purpose between the parties; and entrepreneurs who did undertake such technology transfer felt the process was badly im.eded by the lack of available finance, and expressed fears about poor protection of intellectual property rights in China. The m.jority of the sam.le firm. acted opportunistically, taking advantage of the benefits offered under governm.nt schem.s to earn rapid returns m.inly using extant technologies. These conclusions suggest that the Chinese governm.nt＇s policies in this area of technology transfer have had only lim.ted success.

Operation of a dual fluidized bed, consisting of a riser as com.ustor and bubbling bed as gasifier, for synthesis gas production from.a solid fuel requires determ.nation of the solids circulation rate and char transfer rate. The perform.nce relies on supplying sufficient heat from.the com.ustor to the gasifier by circulation of solids between these two reactors. The flow rate of char is required to track the heat generated in the com.ustor, which supports endotherm.c reactions in the gasifier. Direct m.asurem.nt of these two critical param.ters is difficult, with the num.er of reported techniques capable of working at high tem.eratures extrem.ly sm.ll. An indirect m.thod was developed, using m.ss and energy balances over the entire system.and individual reactors, to estim.te the solids circulation rate and char transfer rate. There was general agreem.nt between heat losses estim.ted from.energy-balance calculations and from.direct m.asurem.nt of the outer reactor surface tem.erature. Under typical gasification conditions, the solids circulation fluxes were estim.ted to be 45.2 and 55.6 kg/(m.2 s) in two independent tests, which were in good agreem.nt with values obtained using a therm.l tracer;char transfer rates were calculated to be 1.2 and 0.6 kg/h, which were in reasonable agreem.nt with average biom.ss feed rates. This m.thod can be applied to dual gasification system. at any tem.erature or flow rate.

Autom.ted Telephone Calls in the Follow-Up of Self-Care in Outpatients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Feasibility Study

Aim. and objectives: To test an autom.ted telephone service as a follow-up and support strategy for self-care in a population of adult m.xican patients with type 2 diabetes. m.thods: The design was a two-group com.arative design, with pre and post-intervention m.asurem.nts. Patients were assigned into intervention (n = 31), or com.arison (n = 33) groups. Over 12 weeks, each participant in the intervention group received autom.ted phone calls with instructions to facilitate accom.lishm.nt of the treatm.nt, and self-care activities. Two focus groups helped to appreciate patients’ follow-up experience. Random.zed grouping was perform.d by selecting num.ers from.an urn;the final sam.le com.rised 31 (48%) patients in the intervention group, and 33 (52%) in the com.arison group;these procedures were perform.d by the case nurse m.nagem.nt. The study was approved by the Ethics Com.ittee of the Autonom.us University of Nuevo Leon and the University of m.chigan;all of the participants signed inform.d consent. Results: Of the 372 program.ed phone calls m.de to the participants, 234 were com.leted, representing a 62.9% response rate. Phone calls m.y be associated to a 0.82% decrease in the HbA1c values and to lower depression scores. HbA1c m.asurem.nts decreased 0.82% (m.= 7.41 - 6.69;t = 25;4.11;p = ?0.001) from.the baseline values over the 12-week study in the intervention group and 0.49% (m.= 7.24 - 6.75;t = 26;2.11;p = 0.044) in the com.arison group. Variables related to m.dication intake did not exhibit differences between the baseline and second m.asurem.nts, except with respect to the scale of depression.

Helicoverpa arm.gera has been controlled effectively with chem.cal insec- ticides in the m.jor cotton crop production areas of northern Greece for m.ny years. However, a resurgence of the pest was observed in 2010, which significantly affected crop production. During a 4-year survey （2007-2010）, we exam.ned the insecticide re- sistance status of 1-1. arm.gera populations from.two m.jor and representative cotton production areas in northern Greece against seven insecticides （chlorpyrifos, diazinon, m.thom.l, alpha-cyperm.thrin, cyperm.thrin, gam.a-cyhalothrin and endosulfan）. Full dose-response bioassays on third instar larvae were perform.d by topical application. Lethal doses at 50% were estim.ted by probit analysis and resistance factors （RF） were calculated, com.ared to a susceptible laboratory reference stra^a. Resistance levels were relatively m.derate until 2009, with resistance ratios below 10-fold for organophosphates and carbam.tes and up to 16-fold for the pyrethroid alpha-cyperm.thrin. However, resis- tance rose to 46- and 81-fold for chlorpyrifos and alpha-cyperm.thrin, respectively in 2010, when the resurgence of the pest was observed. None of the known pyrethroid resistance m.tations were found in the pyrethroid-resistant insects. The possible association between resistance and H. arm.gera resurgence in Greece is discussed.
