lessons learned from hydrothermal to hot dry rock exploration and production

In this paper,we investigate geothermal exploration and production in 189 hydrothermal projects and 42 hot dry rock projects around the *** hydrothermal fields for a working hydrothermal system to generate electricity should have the elements of heat source,water-saturated porous or fractured reservoir,caprock,heat transfer pathway,and good heat preservation condition and geothermal power energy intensity of 10-20 MW per km^(2)within at least 5 km^(2)area in tectonically active *** hot water or steam flow rate in this hydrothermal system is normally larger than 40 l/s with temperature of 150℃or *** power generated from enhanced geothermal system(EGS)in hot dry rock projects are generally less than 2 MW because the flow rate in most cases is much less than 40 l/s even with the hydraulic fractures using the modern stimulation technology learned from the oil and gas *** natural fracture in the subsurface is generally beneficial to the hydraulic fracturing and heat recovery in the hot dry ***,the hydraulic fracture parameters,injection rate and well spacing,drilling strategy should be properly designed to avoid the short-circuit between injector and producer and low heat *** the future,CO^(2)enhanced geothermal recovery associated with CO^(2)sequestration in the high temperature oil,gas,and geothermal fields maybe a good *** the other hand,both nearreal-time seismic monitoring to limit the pumping rate and the closed-loop of the Eavor-loop style system without hydraulic fracture can contribute greatly to heat recovery of hot dry rocks and mitigate the risks of the hydraulic fracturing induced ***,the hybrid solar and geothermal system performs better than the stand-alone geothermal system.

Acetaminophen and zinc phosphide for lethal management of invasive lizards Ctenosaura similis

Reducing populations of invasive lizards through trapping and shooting is feasible in many cases but effective integrated management relies on a variety of tools, including toxicants. In Florida, using wild-caught non-native black spiny-tailed iguanasCtenosaura similis, we screened acetaminophen and zinc phosphide to determine their suitability for effective population management of this prolific invasive species. Of the animals that received acetaminophen, none died except at the highest test dose, 240 mg per lizard, which is not practical for field use. Zinc phosphide produced 100% mortality at dose levels as little as 25 mg per lizard, equivalent to about 0.5% in bait which is lower than currently used in commercial baits for commensal rodent control. We conclude that zinc phosphide has potential as a useful tool for reducing populations of invasive lizards such as the black spiny-tailed iguana provided target-selective delivery methods are developed.

Association between axial length and toric intraocular lens rotation according to an online toric back-calculator

AIM: To assess the relationship between axial length(Al) and intraocular lens(IOl) rotation among eyes receiving a toric IOl and subsequently entered into an online toric back-calculator ***: Retrospective analysis of data collected online via ***, a freely available online toric back-calculator where surgeons enter pre-and postoperative information to help manage residual postoperative *** records were deemed valid with entry of Al and IOl orientation between January 2017 and March *** was determined by a difference of ≥5° between pre-operative intended IOl orientation and actual post-operative IOl *** and magnitude of rotation are presented with means and associated standard deviation(SD).linear regression models of this association are ***: Records of 6752 eyes were included in the analysis, of which 74.8% were determined to have a rotated *** magnitude of rotation increased with each millimeter(mm) increase in Al with a mean rotation of 13.3°(SD: 12.8°) for eyes with Al 20-20.9 mm and a maximum mean rotation of 30.6°(SD: 30.3°) among eyes with Al 29-29.9 *** linear modeling demonstrated a significant association(Plysis from an online database indicates that toric IOls inserted into eyes with longer Al are more likely to rotate and to rotate more degrees from the target *** findings from this study are clinically relevant for surgeons implanting toric IOls.

The impact of climate change may be felt most keenly by tropical *** these taxa,it is argued,thermal specialization means a given shift in temperature will have a larger effect on *** species with limited dispersal ability,the impact of climate change depends on the capacity for their climate-relevant traits to *** shifts can occur through genetic adaptation,various forms of plasticity,or a combination of these *** we assess the extent and causes of shifts in 7 physiological traits in a tropical lizard,the rainforest sunskink(lampropholis coggeri).Two populations were sampled that differ from each other in both climate and physiological *** compared trait values in each animal soon after field collection versus following acclimation to laboratory *** also compared trait values between populations in:(i)recently field-collected animals;(ii)the same animals following laboratory acclimation;and(iii)the laboratory-reared offspring of these *** results reveal high trait lability,driven primarily by acclimation and local *** contrast,developmental plasticity,resulting from incubation temperature,had little to no effect on most *** results suggest that,while specialized,tropical ectotherms may be capable of rapid shifts in climate-relevant traits.

Simulation-based feasibility study of improved air conditioning systems for hospital operating room

The goal of the air distribution inside a hospital operating room （OR） is to protect the patient and staff from cross-infection while maintaining occupant comfort and not affecting the facilitation of surgical tasks. In ORs, HEPA-filtered air and vertical （downward） laminar airflow are often used to achieve a unidirectional flow of fresh air from ceiling, washing over the patient and flowing out of exhaust vents on the side walls, near the floor. However, previous research has shown that this method does not necessarily achieve the desired unidirectional flow pattern or adequately achieve optimal air asepsis. The results from this study show that maximizing the area of the laminar flow diffusers remedies this issue and provides very low contamination levels. The use of air curtains as specified by manufacturers of commercial products may not provide satisfactory results, with noticeable contamination levels at the wound site.

Status of the Specialty of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine

The objectives of this paper are to help specialists in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine plan their careers, influence the future of the PRM specialty and advocate effectively for those with limitations of functioning. The experiences of the authors are the sources of its observations and suggestions. The senior author has had extensive national and international experience in the specialty as a clinician, teacher, researcher, manager, leader and advocate. The junior author adds the insights of one who only recently has become immersed in PRM. The following are suggestions and observations the authors believe could contribute to the future success of individual PRM specialists and the PRM specialty. ①Review and reinforce the significant accomplishments of PRM over the last 70 years. It has significantly expanded the focus of health care to include the importance of functioning. ②Identify the specialty′s current strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities. As a clinical specialty, it has expanded nationally and internationally, yet its research contributions remain limited. The absence of an evidence base for much of its activity risks reduced support from payers, yet the population needing its services continues to expand. ③Develop strategies to increase the ability of PRM specialists and PRM to improve the lives of people with or likely to have limitations of functioning. These strategies could include sharing best practices, supporting effectiveness research and developing expert consensus guidelines. The need for physicians who are experts in the strategies of improving the lives of those with complex problems of functioning will continue to expand. This need will assure the continuation of the specialty of PRM as long as it improves the abilities of its members to help those with problems of functioning, and it advocates for those whom its members serve.

Intra-axonal protein synthesis–a new target for neural repair?

Although initially argued to be a feature of immature neurons with incomplete polarization, there is clear evidence that neurons in the peripheral nervous system retain the capacity for intra-axonal protein synthe- sis well into adulthood. This localized protein synthesis has been shown to contribute to injury signaling and axon regeneration in peripheral nerves. Recent works point to potential for protein synthesis in axons of the vertebrate central nervous system, mRNAs and protein synthesis machinery have now been docu- mented in lamprey, mouse, and rat spinal cord axons. Intra-axonal protein synthesis appears to be activated in adult vertebrate spinal cord axons when they are regeneration-competent. Rat spinal cord axons regen- erating into a peripheral nerve graft contain mRNAs and markers of activated translational machinery. Indeed, levels of some growth-associated mRNAs in these spinal cord axons are comparable to the regen- erating sciatic nerve. Markers of active translation tend to decrease when these axons stop growing, but can be reactivated by a second axotomy. These emerging observations raise the possibility that mRNA transport into and translation within axons could be targeted to facilitate regeneration in both the peripheral and central nervous systems.

The impact of personality on the success of prospecting behavior in changing landscapes

Personality can play a large role in dispersal decisions, influencing how each individual estimates and values expected costs versus benefits of venturing out to explore the unknown. We contrast the impact of persistence on fitness using decision theory models to examine the relative success of prospecting movement (which is a widespread behavior used by animals to explore available breeding habitat before determining where to settle) in different landscapes among individuals with different personalities. While evaluating trends in the costs and benefits of movement we provide a quantifiable measure of the impacts of relative tenacity in prospecting behavior on fitness gains/losses. Our model results predict that, regardless of landscape composition, individuals with greater tenacity in prospecting strategy have reduced fitness gains relative to individuals who are more willing to both initiate novel strategies, but then also abandon the new strategy rapidly if initial search does not seem fruitful. We show that fitness gains from choosing an appropriate prospecting strategy (i.e. abandoning poor habitat or staying in rich habitat) can be very high, indicating a potentially large influence from personality on fitness. Importantly, the model predicts that relative fitness gains are highly dependent on the availability of high quality habitat in the landscape, even if the difference under varying fitness outcomes between poor and rich habitat was substantial.

Cooperative behaviors are ubiquitous in nature and human *** is very important to understand the internal mechanism of emergence and maintenance of *** we know now,the offsprings inherit not only the phenotype but also the neighborhood relationship of their *** recent research results show that the interactions among individuals facilitate survival of cooperation through network reciprocity of clustering *** paper aims at introducing an inheritance mechanism of neighborhood relationship to explore the evolution of *** detail,a mathematical model is proposed to characterize the evolutionary process with the above inheritance *** analysis and numerical simulations indicate that high-level cooperation can emerge and be maintained for a wide variety of cost-to-benefit ratios,even if mutation happens during the evolving process.
