Effects of a school-based karate intervention on academic achievement,psychosocial functioning,and physical fitness:A multi-country cluster randomized controlled trial

purpose:To examine the effects of a school-based karate intervention on academic achievement,psychosocial functioning,and physical fitness in children aged 7-8 ***:Twenty schools in 5 different European countries(2 second-grade classrooms per school)participated in a cluster randomized controlled trial(Sport at School trial).participants were assigned to either a control group,which continued with their habitual physical education lessons,or to an intervention group,which replaced these lessons with a 1-year karate intervention(Karate Mind and Movement program).A total of 721 children(344 girls and 377 boys,7.4±0.5 years old,mean±SD)completed the study,of which 333 and 388 were assigned to the control group and intervention group,*** included academic performance(average grade),psychosocial functioning(Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire for parents),and different markers of physical fitness(cardiorespiratory fitness,balance,and flexibility).Results:The intervention provided small but significant benefits compared to the control group for academic achievement(d=0.16;p=0.003),conduct problems(d=-0.28;p=0.003),cardiorespiratory fitness(d=0.36;pp=0.015).There was a trend towards significant benefits for flexibility(d=0.24;p=0.056).No significant benefits were observed for other variables,including psychosocial difficulties,emotional symptoms,hyperactivity/inattention,peer problems,or prosocial behaviour(all p>0.05).Conclusion:A 1-year school-based karate intervention was effective in improving academic achievement,conduct problems,and physical fitness in primary school *** results support the inclusion of karate during physical education lessons.

BACKGROUND Bedside needle arthroscopy of the ankle under local anesthesia has been proposed for intra-articular delivery of injectable *** and tolerability of this approach in the clinical setting–including patients with end-stage ankle pathology and/or a history of prior surgery–is not *** To assess clinical accuracy and tolerability of bedside needle arthroscopy as a delivery system for injectable agents into the tibiotalar *** This was a prospective study that included adult patients who were scheduled for an injection with hyaluronic acid to the tibiotalar *** our center,these injections are used as a last resort prior to extensive *** primary outcome was injection accuracy,which was defined as injecting through the arthroscopic cannula with intra-articular positioning confirmed by a clear arthroscopic view of the joint *** outcome measures included a patientreported numeric rating scale(NRS,0-10)of pain during the procedure and willingness of patients to return for the same *** of ankle pain at rest and during walking was collected at baseline and at 2-wk *** were monitored from inclusion up to a 2-wk control *** We performed 24 ***(46%)participants were male,and mean age was 46.8±14.5 *** was the indication for injection in 20(83%)cases,of which 8(33%)patients suffered from osteoarthritis Kellgren-Lawrence grade IV,and 10(42%)patients from Kellgren-Lawrence grade *** osteochondral defect was the indication for injection in 4(17%)cases.A history of ankle surgery was present in 14(58%)participants and a history of multiple ankle surgeries in 11(46%)*** was possible to confirm accuracy in 21(88%)*** 3(12%)participants where needle arthroscopy did not reach a clear view of the joint space all suffered from Kellgren-Lawrence grade IV *** during the procedure was reported with a median of 1[i

A statistical study of the interdependence of solar wind parameters

Correlation analysis of solar wind parameters, namely solar wind velocity, proton density, proton temperature and mean interplanetary magnetic field （IMF） from the ACE spacecraft data near Earth, was done. To our best knowledge, this study is a novel one since we consider here only the parameters inside the solar wind, including the mean IMF and, hence, the solar wind is a self consistent system. We have proposed a Multiple Linear Regression （MLR） model for the prediction of the response variable （solar wind velocity） using the parameters proton density, proton temperature and mean IMF measured as daily averages. About 60% of the observed value can be predicted using this model. It is shown that, in general, the correlation between solar wind parameters is significant. A deviation from the prediction at the solar maximum is interpreted. These results are verified by a graphical method.

Review of All possible Conversion Equations of Influence Coefficients with Different Formats on Two-plane Balancing

This article lists all possible conversion equations of influence coefficients(ICs)with different formats when some of these are known to handle two-plane balancing tasks with no or less trial weight *** are two approaches for two-plane *** can treat it as a multi-plane balance problem involving a 2×2 matrix of complex ICs where two direct ICs along with two cross-effect ICs are generated so that correction weights at one or two balance planes can be *** can also apply a static pare(in-phase)and/or couple pair(180 degrees out-of-phase)weights for *** latter approach has been used quite often in the field,especially on steam turbine and generator *** on vibration mode shapes and combinations as well as balance plane accessibility,sometimes applying static or couple pair weights can be a wise choice;other times weights at one or two end planes are *** are totally 4 possible sets of IC data due to weights at plane 1,plane 2,static pair,and couple *** data would typically be obtained by applying trial weights followed by trial weight *** is found,however,that all these IC data can be converted easily without trial weight runs once any two of 4 sets are *** above findings and conversion equations have been obtained analytically and verified by experimental *** cases are given to demonstratetheirapplications.

Coronary artery disease(CAD)is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in elderly patients.^([1])Despite this,elderly patients are under-represented in most trials of ***-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction(NSTEMI)is a common cause of hospitalization among patients≥80 years of age,^([2])and with an aging global population,there is a pressing need to establish the optimal management strategy for these ***,we conducted a meta-analysis of all randomized control trials(RCTs)performed to date in patients≥80 years of age,comparing an initial invasive versus conservative strategy to provide insights into their optimal initial management strategy.

Background:It has long been assumed that post-stroke intracranial pressure(ICp)elevation occurs because of large infarct and edema ***,we have repeatedly shown Icp elevation at 24 h post-stroke in the presence of little to no edema in *** processes are often conserved across species and types of ***,we aimed to determine if an ICp rise occurs at 24 h post-stroke in the presence of small infarct and edema volumes in ***:Mice were randomized by random number table to either photothrombotic stroke or sham surgery(n=15).Epidural ICp was recorded using a fiber optic catheter at 1 h post-stroke(baseline)and between 23 and ***:ICp was significantly higher at 24 h compared to baseline in stroke animals(n=6;10.71±6.45mmHg vs.3.74±2.20mmHg,respec-tively;p=0.03).ICp at 24 h was also significantly higher in stroke mice compared to sham(n=6;3.45±1.43mmHg;p=0.02).There was no change in ICp in sham mice(p=0.9).Edema volumes in stroke animals were small(0.04±0.04 mm3)and unlikely to have caused significant ICp ***:This study provides evidence of an edema-independent ICp elevation following small ischemic stroke in *** occurrence of this rise supports our findings in other species and suggests it is caused by a previously undescribed mechanism.

BACKGROUND Colitis is a known potential toxicity of immune checkpoint inhibitors(ICIs).Studies evaluating the risk of disease exacerbation following ICI treatment in patients with pre-existing inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)are *** To assess the clinical characteristics of IBD patients treated with ICIs and determine prevalence of subsequent IBD *** We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all patients in the Stanford Research Repository database with pre-existing IBD who were exposed to *** The prevalence of IBD exacerbation following ICI was 36.8% amongst 19 patients meeting inclusion *** with exacerbations had more gastrointestinalrelated hospitalizations(4 of 7)than patients without exacerbations(0 of 12;p=0.0090).CONCLUSION The prevalence of IBD exacerbations following ICI was higher than reported rates of ICI-induced colitis and diarrhea in the general population and was associated with hospitalization.

Rates, predictors, and causes of readmission after transcatheter aortic valve replacement in patients with chronic kidney disease

BACKGROUND Transcatheter aortic valve replacement(TAVR)is a revolutionary procedure for severe aortic *** coexistence of chronic kidney disease(CKD)and TAVR introduces a challenge that significantly impacts patient *** To define readmission rates,predictors,and causes after TAVR procedure in CKD stage 1-4 *** We used the national readmission database 2018 and 2020 to look into readmission rates,causes and predictors after TAVR procedure in patients with CKD stage *** Out of 24758 who underwent TAVR and had CKD,7892(32.4%)patients were readmitted within 90 days,and had higher adjusted odds of being females(adjusted odds ratio:1.17,95%CI:1.02-1.31,p=0.02)with longer length of hospital stay>6 days,and more comorbidities including but not limited to diabetes mellitus,anemia,and congestive heart failure(CHF).CONCLUSION Most common causes of readmission included CHF(18.0%),sepsis,and complete atrioventricular *** readmission predictors with very close followup is warranted to prevent such high rate of readmission.

Net ecosystem carbon exchange for Bermuda grass growing in mesocosms as affected by irrigation frequency

Intensification of grazed grasslands following conversion from dryland to irrigated farming has the potential to alter ecosystem carbon(C)cycling and affect components of carbon dioxide(CO_(2))exchange that could lead to either net accumulation or loss of soil *** there are many studies on the effect of water availability on biomass production and soil C stocks,much less is known about the effect of the frequency of water inputs on the components of CO_(2)*** grew Bermuda grass(Cynodon dactylon L.)in mesocosms under irrigation frequencies of every day(I_(1) treatment,30 d),every two days(I_(2) treatment,12 d),every three days(I_(3) treatment,30 d),and every six days(I_(6) treatment,18 d,after I_(2) treatment).Rates of CO_(2)exchange for estimating net ecosystem CO_(2)exchange(F_(N)),ecosystem respiration(R_(E)),and soil respiration(R_(S))were measured,and gross C uptake by plants(F_(G))and respiration from leaves(R_(L))were calculated during two periods,1–12 and 13–30 d,of the 30-d *** the first 12 d,there were no significant differences in cumulative F_(N)(mean±standard deviation,61±30 g C m^(-2),n=4).During the subsequent 18 d,cumulative F_(N) decreased with decreasing irrigation frequency and increasing cumulative soil water deficit(W),with values of 70±22,60±16,and 18±12 g C m^(-2) for the I_(1),I_(3),and I_(6) treatments,*** were similar decreases in F_(G),R_(E),and R_(L) with increasing W,but differences in R_(S) were not *** of the C_(4) grass growing in a C_(3)-derived soil enabled partitioning of R_(S) into its autotrophic(R_(A))and heterotrophic(R_(H))components using a^(13)C natural abundance isotopic technique at the end of the experiment when differences in cumulative W between the treatments were the *** values of R_(H) and its percentage contributions to R_(S)(43%±8%,42%±8%,and 8%±5%for the I_(1),I_(3),and I_(6) treatments,respectively)suggested that R_(H) remained unaffected across a wide
