The global Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes held its 3rd global Summit of Research Institutes for Disaster Risk Reduction at the Disaster Prevention Research Institute,Kyoto University,Japan,19–21 March,*** global Alliance seeks to contribute to enhancing disaster risk reduction(DRR) and disaster resilience through the collaboration of research organizations around the *** summit aim was to expand the platform for bridging science and policy making by evaluating the evidence base needed to meet the expected outcomes and actions of the Sendai Framework for Disaster RiskReduction 2015–2030 and its Science and Technology *** summit reflected the international nature of collaborative research and action.A pre-conference questionnaire filled out by global Alliance members identified323 research projects that are indicative of current *** were categorized to support seven parallel discussion sessions related to the Sendai Framework priorities for *** discussion sessions focused on research that aims to deepen the understanding of disaster *** cross-cutting sessions focused on research that is aimed at the priorities for action on governance,resilience,and *** summaries were presentedin plenary sessions in support of outcomes for widely enhancing the science and policy of DRR.

Partnerships have become a comer stone of contemporary research that recognizes working across disciplines and co-production with intended users as essential to enabling sustainable ***,research that addresses sustainable development challenges brings an urgent need to reflect on the ways that partnerships are supported,and for the disaster risk management and resilience communities,efforts to support realization of the wider 2030 Agenda for sustainable development bring particular *** November 2019,the UK Disasters Research group(DRg)brought together a number of key stakeholders focused on disaster risk,resilience,and sustainability research relevant to Official DevelopmeAssistance to consider how fit for purpose existing partnership models are for the pace of change required to deliver the priorities of the wider 2030 *** were invited to discuss how research partnerships across three levels(individual and project-based;national and institutional;and international)could be improved based on elements that facilitate robust partnerships and learning from aspects that hinder *** the discussions,participanls emphasized the importance of effective communication mechanisms in building partnerships,co-designing projects,and establishing shared *** approaches to addressing equitable partnerships and funding more substantive timelines will be key to responding to the challenges of the 2030 Agenda.

Extraction of rare earth elements from a South American ionic clay

Ionic clays,formed by the natural weathering of REE-bearing minerals and the adsorption of the resulting liberated REE ions onto the clay surface,are an important resource for critical rare earth elements(rees).Here,a two-step desorption process using ammonium sulfate with active pH adjustment using sulfuric acid was developed to extract rees from a South American *** desorption process was optimized using response surface methodology approach and the optimum operating conditions were determined to be 0.15 mol/L ammonium sulfate,pH 3,liquid to solid ratio of 3/1,and 25℃ with20 min residence *** is shown that this ionic clay is significantly different from previously reported clays,e.g.,from southern China,as it consists of three modes of rees,including ion-exchanged rees physically adsorbed on the clay surface,hydrolyzed rees chemically adsorbed on the clay surface,and mineralized(non-desorbable) rees within the *** investigations through progressive acidification during desorption and adsorption isotherms show that REE desorption/adsorption occurs due to the combined action of physical ion exchange adsorption and surface complexation chemical adsorption,with their relative importance depending on the pH of the system and the amount of sulfate anions present within the *** work supports overall efforts to utilize ionic clays as a relatively new resource for rees to empower the development and adoption of modern green technologies such as wind turbines and electric vehicles.

glacial-interglacial productivity contrasts along the eastern Arabian Sea:Dominance of convective mixing over upwelling

The western continental margin of India is one of the highly productive regions in the global *** productivity is induced by upwelling and convective mixing during the southwest and northeast monsoons *** the importance of high primary productivity,a sediment core was collected below the current oxygen minimum zone（OMZ） from the southwestern continental margin of *** was dated by AMS radiocarbon and as many as 60 paleoclimate/paceoceanographic proxies,such as particle size,biogenic components,major,trace and rare earth elements（rees） which were measured for the first time to determine sources of sediment,biogeochemical processes operating in the water column and their variations since the last glacial cycle.R-mode factor analysis of comprehensive data indicates that the dominant regulator of paleoproductivity is the southwest monsoon wind induced *** paleoproductivity related factors identified are the marine biogenic component and biogenic detritus（as an exported component from the water column added to the bottom sediment）.All paleoproductivity components increased significantly during the marine isotope stage-1（MIS-1）compared to those accumulated from MIS-4 to *** second group of factors identified are the terrigenous sediments with heavy minerals like zircon and *** terrigenous sediment,in particular,increased during MIS-2 when the sea-level was lower;however,the heavy mineral component fluctuated over time implying pulsed inputs of *** diagenetic fraction and reducing component are the third group of factors identified which varied with time with increased accumulation during the MIS *** primary productivity along the southwestern continental margin of India seems to have been controlled principally by the upwelling during the southwest monsoon season that was weaker from MIS-4 to MIS-2,as relative to that during the *** contrast,increased glacial productivity noticed in se

Alpha1B adrenoceptor expression is a marker of reduced survival and increased tumor recurrence in patients with endometrioid ovarian cancer

AIM: To investigate the expression patterns of different adrenoceptor isoforms in ovarian cancer and their association with survival and tumor recurrence. METHODS: The protein expression levels of a1 B, a2 C and b2 adrenoceptor were assessed in unselected ovarian cancer using immunohistochemistry on microarrayed archival tissue samples. A database containing clinical and pathology parameters and follow-up was usedto investigate the association between adrenoceptor isoform expression with ovarian specific survival and tumor recurrence, using univariate and multivariate statistical analysis. RESULTS: Expression of a1 B showed an association with reduced ovarian specific survival(P = 0.05; CI: 1.00-1.49) and increased tumor recurrence(P = 0.021, CI: 1.04-1.69) in the whole patient group. On subanalysis the expression of a1 B in endometrioid cancers(χ2 = 5.867, P = 0.015) was found to predict reduced ovarian specific survival and increased tumor recurrence independently of tumor grade, clinical stage and chemotherapy. An association with clinical outcome was not seen for a2 C or b2 ***: Alpha1 B adrenoceptor protein was found to predict increased risk of tumor recurrence and reduced mortality in patients with endometrioid type ovarian cancer and should be investigated as a biomarker for identifying patients at increased risk of disease progression. Furthermore, a adrenergic receptor antagonists with a1 B selectivity should be investigated as a possible adjuvant therapy for treating patients with endometrioid cancer. Proof of principle could be tested in a retrospective population study.
