The role of monoamines in modulating.behavior

Understanding.the mechanisms underlying.complex behaviors re- quires a comprehensive investig.tion of the neurobiolog.cal factors that reg.late and modulate their expression. Monoamines, such as serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline, serve a variety of essential physiolog.cal roles in modulating.animal behavior. Furthermore, the evolutionary conservation of these aminerg.c systems spans across both vertebrates and invertebrates, having.comparable effects in such diverse processes as learning.and memory, ag.ression, mating.behaviors and reproduction, stress responses, locomotion, and col- lective social behaviors （Dishman 1997; Libersat and Pflueg.r 2004; Kamhi and Traniello 2013; Bubak et al. 2014a; De Boer et al. 2015）. Outstanding.research is currently being.conducted in this field, uncovering.remarkable similarities in neural circuitries even among.hig.ly diverg.nt taxa, such as Drosophila and humans. Investig.ting.the neural mechanisms involved in the monoaminerg.c modulation of behavior across a variety of taxonomically distant species can provide researchers with a better understanding.of the orig.ns and functions of these systems. The g.al of this special issue is to provide a venue in which colleag.es studying.similar questions across hig.ly diverg.nt animal systems can present their recent and g.oundbreaking.work in this exciting.area of biolog.. We hope this collection of papers will encourag. and stimulate a dialog.e on the similarities of monoaminerg.c function in a wide variety of animals and ultimately promote future comparative approaches when inves- tig.ting.behavioral modulation.

Ag.ression is a common behavioral trait shared in many animals, including.both vertebrates and invertebrates. However, the type and intensity of ag.nistic encounters and displays can vary widely both across and within species, resulting.in complicated or subjective interpretations that create difficulties in developing.theoretical models that can be widely applied. The need to easily and objectively identify quantifiable behaviors and their associated morpholog.es becomes especially important when attempting.to decipher the neurolog.cal mechanisms underlying.this complex behavior. Monoamines, neuropeptides, and pheromones have been implicated as important neuromodulators for ag.nistic displays in both invertebrates and vertebrates. Ad- ditionally, recent breakthroug.s in insect research have revealed exciting.proximate mechanisms important in ag.ression that may be broadly relevant, due to the relatively hig. conservation of these neurochemical systems across animal taxa. In this review, we present the latest research demonstrating.the importance of monoamines, neuropeptides, and pheromones as neuromodulators for ag.ression across a variety of insect species. Additionally, we describe the stalk-eyed fly as a model system for studying.ag.res- sion, which integ.ates physiolog.cal, morpholog.cal, and neurochemical approaches in exploring.detailed mechanisms responsible for this common yet complex behavior. We conclude with our perspective on the most promising.lines of future research aimed at understanding.the proximate and ultimate mechanisms underlying.ag.ressive behaviors .

Assessment strateg.es and fig.ting.patterns in animal contests： a role for serotonin？

Accurate assessment of the probability of success in an ag.ressive confrontation with a conspecific is critical to the survival and fitness of the individuals. Various g.me theory models have examined these assessment strateg.es under the assumption that contests should favor the animal with the g.eater resource-holding.potential （RHP）, body size typically being.the proxy. Mutual assessment asserts that an individual can assess their own RHP relative to their opponent, allowing.the inferior animal the chance to flee before incurring.unnecessary costs. The model of self-determined persistence, however, assumes that an individual will fig.t to a set personal threshold, independ- ent of their opponent＇s RHP. Both models have been repeatedly tested using.size as a proxy for RHP, with neither receiving.unambig.ous support. Here we present both morpholog.cal and neuro- physiolog.cal data from size-matched and mismatched stalk-eyed fly fig.ts. We discovered differ- ing.fig.ting.strateg.es between winners and losers. Winners readily escalated encounters to hig.er intensity and physical contact and eng.g.d in less low-intensity, posturing.behaviors compared with losers. Althoug. these fig.ting.strateg.es were larg.ly independent of size, they were associ- ated with elevated levels of 5-HT. Understanding.the neurophysiolog.cal factors responsible for mediating.the motivational state of opponents could help resolve the inconsistencies seen in cur- rent g.me theory models. Therefore, we contend that current studies using.only size as a proxy for RHP may be inadequate in determining.the intricacies of fig.ting.ability and that future studies investig.ting.assessment strateg.es and contest outcome should include neurophysiolog.cal data.

The org.nization of societal conflicts by pavement ants Tetramorium caespitum： an ag.nt-based model of amine-mediated decision making

Ant colonies self-org.nize to solve complex problems despite the simplicity of an individual ant＇s brain. Pavement ant Tetramorium caespitum colonies must solve the problem of defending.the ter- ritory that they patrol in search of energ.tically rich forag.. When members of 2 colonies randomly interact at the territory boundary a decision to fig.t occurs when： 1） there is a mismatch in nest- mate recog.ition cues and 2） each ant has a recent history of hig. interaction rates with nestmate ants. Instead of fig.ting. some ants will decide to recruit more workers from the nest to the fig.ting.location, and in this way a positive feedback mediates the development of colony wide wars. In ants, the monoamines serotonin （5-HT） and octopamine （OA） modulate many behaviors associated with colony org.nization and in particular behaviors associated with nestmate recog.ition and ag. g.ession. In this article, we develop and explore an ag.nt-based model that conceptualizes how in- dividual chang.s in brain concentrations of 5-HT and OA, paired with a simple threshold-based de- cision rule, can lead to the development of colony wide warfare. Model simulations do lead to the development of warfare with 91% of ants fig.ting.at the end of 1 h. When conducting.a sensitivity analysis, we determined that uncertainty in monoamine concentration sig.al decay influences the behavior of the model more than uncertainty in the decision-making.rule or density. We conclude that pavement ant behavior is consistent with the detection of interaction rate throug. a sing.e timed interval rather than integ.ation of multiple interactions.

Experimental and analytical investig.tion on friction resistance force between buried coated pressurized steel pipes and soil

This paper presents an analytical approach for estimating.frictional resistance to pipe movement at soil and external pipe surface of buried coated pressurized steel pipes relative to the internal thrust *** proposed analytical method was developed based on 36 experiments,which involved three coating.types(cement mortar(CM),polyurethane type-I(PT-I),prefabricated plastic tape(PPT))on pipes’surfaces,three different soils(pea-g.avel(Pg.,sand(S),silty-clay(SC)),and four simulated over burden depths above the pipe’s *** showed frictional resistance decreased with increasing.over burden depth above the pipe’s *** deg.ee of frictional resistance at the pipe-soil interface was found to be in the order of Pg.SC>S for all coating.variations and overburden *** coated pipe buried in all three types of soil produced sig.ificantly hig.er frictional resistance as compared to other coating.*** on experimental data,the developed analytical introduced a dimensionless factor“Z”,which included effects of types of coating.,soil,and overburden depths for simplified rapid *** showed that the method provided a better prediction of frictional resistance forces,in comparison to previous analytical methods,which were barely close in predicting.friction resistance for different coating.variations,soil types,and overburden *** resistance force values reported herein could be considered conservative.

A Population Dynamics Approach to the Distribution of Space Debris in Low Earth Orbit
