The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic outbreak and the unfortunate misuse of toxic chemical warfare agents(CWAs)highlight the importance of developing functional materials to protect against these chemical and pathogen ***−organic frameworks(MOFs),which comprise a tunable class of crystalline porous materials built from inorganic nodes and organic linkers,have emerged as a class of heterogeneous catalysts capable of rapid detoxification of multiple classes of these harmful chemical or biological *** particular,zirconium-based MOFs(Zr-MOFs)feature Lewis acidic nodes that serve as active sites for a wide range of catalytic reactions,including the hydrolysis of organophosphorus nerve agents within seconds in basic aqueous *** addition,postsynthetic modification of Zr-MOFs enables the release of active species capable of reacting with and deactivating harmful *** this impressive performance,utilizing Zr-MOFs in powder form is not practical for application in masks or protective *** address this challenge,our team sought to develop MOF/fiber composite systems that could be adapted for use under realistic operating conditions to protect civilians,military personnel,and first responders from harmful pathogens and chemical warfare *** the last several years,our group has designed and fabricated reactive and biocidal MOF/fiber composites that effectively capture and deactivate these toxic *** this Account,we describe the evolution of these porous and reactive MOF/fiber composites and focus on key design challenges and ***,we devised a scalable method for the integration of Zr-MOFs onto textile substrates using aqueous precursor solutions and without using pretreated textiles,highlighting the potential scalability of this *** beyond standard textiles,we also developed a microbial synthesis strategy to prepare hierarchically porous MOF/bacterial cellulose nanofiber composite sponges that can both captu

Biolog MicroPlates TM. are employed to characterize Trichoderma isolates based on differential assimilation of test substrates and redox reactions in a 96-well test plate. The Biolog method is potentially advantageous in being relatively simple, fast and economical, and data acquisition can be automated using a microplate reader and applicable software. Several research applications of the Biolog system are presented: i) “monophenetic groups” from cluster analyses of phenotype array data are investigated for previously undetected new species in Trichoderma, ii) metabolic characters differentiating species are identified, and multivariate analyses performed to complement molecular data in validating new species and significant variants, and iii) phenotype array data for more than 1200 Trichoderma strains are analysed to select strains that might be exploited for bioconversions and commercial production of enzymes. Phenotype arrays are much more sensitive to strain level variation than molecular techniques, however, phenotype array data do not consistently reflect phylogenies constructed from molecular data. Nevertheless, the Biolog phenotype array is an economical alternative method for surveying biological diversity, and provides data that complements molecular data in phylogenetic studies.

Voltage Stability Constrained Optimal Power Flow Using NSgA-ii

Voltage stability has become an important issue in planning and operation of many power systems. This work includes multi-objective evolutionary algorithm techniques such as genetic Algorithm (gA) and Non-dominated Sorting genetic Algorithm ii (NSgA ii) approach for solving Voltage Stability Constrained-Optimal Power Flow (VSC-OPF). Base case generator power output, voltage magnitude of generator buses are taken as the control variables and maximum L-index of load buses is used to specify the voltage stability level of the system. Multi-Objective OPF, formulated as a multi-objective mixed integer nonlinear optimization problem, minimizes fuel cost and minimizes emission of gases, as well as improvement of voltage profile in the system. NSgA-ii based OPF-case 1-Two objective-Min Fuel cost and Voltage stability index;case 2-Three objective-Min Fuel cost, Min Emission cost and Voltage stability index. The above method is tested on standard IEEE 30-bus test system and simulation results are done for base case and the two severe contingency cases and also on loaded conditions.

Limited research has suggested iron oxide nanoparticles (FeNP) have an inhibitory effect against several different genera of bacteria: Staphylococcus, Bacillus and Pseudomonas spp. In this study we looked at the effect of three different sets of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (FeNPs) on the development of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 biofilms. Two of the tested NPs were SPIONs (Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles). Exposure of cells to the SPIONs at concentrations up to 200 μg/ml resulted in an increase in biofilm biomass by 16 h under static conditions and a corresponding increase in cell density in the bulk liquid. In contrast, these biofilms had decreased levels of extracellular DNA (eDNA). Fe(ii) levels in the supernatants of biofilms formed in the presence of FeNPs exceeded 100 μM compared with 20 μM in control media without cells. Spent cell supernatants had little effect on Fe(ii) levels. Cells also had an effect on the aggregation behavior of these nanoparticles. SPIONs incubated with cells exhibited a decrease in the number and size of FeNP aggregates visible using light microscopy. SPIONs resuspended in fresh media or spent culture supernatants formed large aggregates visible in the light microscope upon exposure to a supermagnet;and could be pelleted magnetically in microtitre plate wells. In contrast, SPION FeNPs incubated with cells were unaffected by exposure to the supermagnet and could not be pelleted. The results of this study indicate a need to reconsider the effects of FeNPs on bacterial growth and biofilm formation and the effect the bacterial cells may have on the use and recovery of SPIONs.

Sorghum metabolism continually adapts to environmental temperature as thermal patterns modulate diurnally and seasonally. The degree of adaptation to any given temperature may be difficult to determine from phenotypic responses of the plants. The present study was designed to see if the efficiency of quantum yield of photosystem ii could be used as a measure of how well leaf tissue metabolism was able to withstand a prolonged respiratory demand caused by elevated temperatures. The efficiency of quantum yield values of Pioneer 84g62 and Northrup King KS585 commercial sorghum hybrids showed that when the hybrids were grown in a 28°C/20°C day/night cycle in the greenhouse or the field, Pioneer hybrid 84g62 withstood subsequent elevated thermal challenges better than Northrup King KS585. The same hybrids grown in a 39°C/32°C day/night cycle showed similar efficiency of quantum yield values when thermally challenged. Water-deficit stress increased the heat resistance of the tissue raising the efficiency of quantum yield of both lines to the same level. Upon recovery from the water deficit stress the differential efficiency of quantum yield values between the two lines re-appeared. The data provided in this study suggest a metabolic advantage of Pioneer 84g62 to environmental thermal challenges compared with the Northrup King KS585.

Background: This study investigated the validity of the DNA-marker based test to determine susceptibility to ETECF4 diarrhoea by comparing the results of two DNA sequencing techniques in weaner pigs following experimental infection with F4 enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli(ETEC-F4). The effects of diet and genetic susceptibility were assessed by measuring the incidence of piglet post-weaning diarrhoea(PWD), faecal E. coli shedding and the diarrhoea ***: A DNA marker-based test targeting the mucin 4 gene(MUC4) that encodes F4 fimbria receptor identified pigs as either fully susceptible(SS), partially or mildly susceptible(SR), and resistant(RR) to developing ETEC-F4 diarrhoea. To further analyse this, DNA sequencing was undertaken, and a significantly higher proportion of C nucleotides was observed for RR and SR at the Xba I cleavage site genotypes when compared to SS. However, no significant difference was found between SR and RR genotypes. Therefore, results obtained from Sanger sequencing retrospectively allocated pigs into a resistant genotype(MUC4–), in the case of a C nucleotide, and a susceptible genotype(MUC4+), in the case of a g nucleotide, at the single nucleotide polymorphism site. A total of 72 weaner pigs(age ~ 21 days), weighing 6.1 ± 1.2 kg(mean ± SEM), were fed 3 different diets:(i) positive control(PC) group supplemented with 3 g/kg zinc oxide(Zn O),(ii) negative control(NC) group(no Zn O or HAMSA),and(iii) a diet containing a 50 g/kg high-amylose maize starch product(HAMSA) esterified with acetate. At days five and six after weaning, all pigs were orally infected with ETEC(serotype O149:F4;toxins LT1, ST1, ST2 and EAST). The percentage of pigs that developed diarrhoea following infection was higher(P = 0.05) in MUC4+ pigs compared to MUC4– pigs(50% vs. 26.8%, respectively).
