Microbiological safety of spices and their interaction with antibiotics:implications for antimicrobial resistance and their role as potential antibiotic adjuncts

Objectives:A study was undertaken to:*** contaminating bacteria on a variety of spices purchased at retail market;*** if spice bacterial enrichments alter the phenotype of 13 bacterial foodborne and clinical pathogens and 1 probiotic organism;and *** if spices can alter antimicrobial activity of seven clinical antibiotics against 16 bacterial foodborne/clinical *** and Methods:Microbiological examination was undertaken employing 27 spice varieties with four antibiotics and 15 bacterial ***:Bacteriological contamination levels varied amongst spice varieties,ranging from Kasmin chilli powder(7.5×10^(6)cfu/g;log10^(6).88 cfu/g)to ginger(1.5×10^(4)cfu/g;log_(10)4.18 cfu/g);mean contamination was 1.38×10^(6)cfu/g(log_(10)6.14 cfu/g).Four species within the genus Bacillus were identified(Bacillus megaterium,Bacillus subtilis,Bacillus licheniformis,and Bacillus cereus).There was no phenotypic difference with the 14 bacteria,with bacterial colony growth/proliferation,pigment production,or with adhesin and mucoid *** of the spice cultures inhibited any of the 14 bacterial species *** the case of doxycycline,amoxicillin,colistin,erythromycin,and piperacillin/tazobactam,the zone of inhibition increased with the inclusion of the 26 spice varieties,suggesting that the spices were interacting synergistically with the antibiotic,thus making the antibiotic more potent against the bacteria ***:This study demonstrates a positive interaction between spices and conventional *** the burden of antimicrobial resistance(AMR)worldwide,but particularly in South Asian countries(India and Pakistan),any food-related innovation that can help maximize the potency of existing antibiotics is to be encouraged and *** specific mechanism as to how spices increase the potency of antibiotics needs to be elucidated,as well as novel food(spice)delivery modalities including novel medicinal foo

Lack of correlation between surface water area and infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTMs) in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF)

Background People with cystic fibrosis(CF)may develop clinically significant chronic respiratory infections with Pseudomonas aeruginosa(PA)and non-tuberculous mycobacteria(NTM).Open water has been suggested to be an important source for continuous or intermittent exposure to these *** date,there has been a paucity of studies examining the relationship between chronic PA and NTM infection in CF patients and surfaces waters,including blue *** aim of this study was therefore to examine the relationship between chronic pulmonary infection with PA and NTMs in children and adults with CF in european countries and area of surface waters,including blue *** european CF registry data detailing incidence of chronic PA and NTM infection in adults and children with CF in europe(n=41,486 in 24 european countries)was correlated with surface water area data from the same countries(approx.678,278 km2)employing Spearman *** Correlation of chronic PA infection in children and adults and surface water area were not significant(p=0.0680 and p=0.8448,respectively),as was NTM infection(p=0.7371 and p=0.0712,respectively).Conclusions Acquistion of PA and its avoidance in people with CF is a complicated dynamic,not solely driven by close association with surface water,but through the integration of several other factors,including mitigations by people with CF to avoid high risk scenarios with surface *** study was unable to demonstrate a correlation between PA and NTM infection in people with cystic fibrosis and surface water area at a national *** patients should continue to be vigilant about potential infection risks posed by water and take evidence-based decisions regarding their behaviour around water to protect them for acquiring these organisms from these sources.

Background:The One Health approach involves collaboration across several sectors,including public health,veterinary and environmental sectors in an integrated *** sectors may be disparate and unrelated,however to succeed,all stakeholders need to understand what the other stakeholders are ***,it is important that there is public acceptance and support of One Health approaches,which requires effective communication between professional and institutional organisations and the *** help aid and facilitate such communication,written materials need to be readable by all stakeholders,in order to communicate *** has been an exponential increase in the publication of papers involving One Health,wither year,in the 2000s,to nearly 500 published in *** date,readability of One Health information has not been scrutinised,nor has it been considered as an integral intervention of One Health policy *** aim of this study was therefore to examine readability of public-facing One Health information prepared by 24 global ***:Readability was calculated using Readable software,to obtain four readability scores[(i)Flesch Reading ease(FRe),(ii)Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level(FKGL),(iii)Gunning Fog Index and(iv)SMOG Index]and two text metrics[words/sentence,syllables/word]for 100 sources of One Health information,from four categories[One Health public information;PubMed abstracts;Science in One Health(SOH)abstracts(articles);SOH abstracts(reviews)].Results:Readability of One Health information for the public is poor,not reaching readability reference *** information was found that had a readability of less than 9th grade(around 14 years old).Mean values for the FRe and FKGL were(19.4±1.4)(target>60)and(15.6±0.3)(targetespectively,with mean words per sentence and syllables per word of 20.5 and 2.0,*** with“One Health”in the title were more difficult to read than those without“One

Investigating the impact of preoperative corneal astigmatism orientation on the postoperative spherical equivalent refraction following intraocular lens implantation

Background:To investigate the impact of the orientation of preoperative corneal astigmatism on achieving the postoperative target refraction following monofocal intraocular lens(IOL)***:This study enrolled 339 eyes who had uneventful cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange(RLe)with subsequent monofocal IOL *** were initially categorized dependent upon axial length and then on the orientation of preoperative anterior corneal *** 1 had against-the-rule(ATR)anterior corneal astigmatism,group 2 had with-the-rule(WTR)anterior corneal astigmatism,and group 3 had oblique(OB)anterior corneal *** preoperative corneal astigmatism was determined by the IOLMaster(Carl Zeiss Meditec AG).Postoperative refraction was completed for all eyes,and the results were calculated and compared for the separate ***:In eyes with axial lengths greater than 22.0 mm and less than 25.0 mm there was a significant difference between the magnitude of preoperative corneal astigmatism between groups 2 and 3 with 0.827±0.376 D in group 2,and 0.677±0.387 D in group *** mean postoperative spherical equivalent(Se)prediction error was−0.132±0.475 D in group 1,0.026±0.497 D in group 2,and−0.130±0.477 D in group *** was a significant difference between groups 1 and *** was no significant difference in the magnitude of preoperative corneal astigmatism and postoperative Se prediction error between the anterior corneal astigmatism orientation groups in eyes with axial lengths of less than or equal to 22.0 mm and greater than or equal to 25.0 ***:The orientation of preoperative anterior corneal astigmatism significantly affected the postoperative biometry prediction error in eyes with astigmatism of 1.75 D or less in eyes with the axial length between 22.0 mm and 25.0 ***,the results were not clinically significant.

With a high penetration of wind turbines,the proportion of synchronous generation in the power system will be reduced at times,thus creating operating difficulties especially during frequency ***,it is anticipated that many grid operators will demand inertia response from wind *** this article,different ways for emulating inertia response in full-rated power converter-based wind turbines equipped with permanent magnet synchronous generators are *** control signals are added to the controller of the wind turbine to extract stored energy from the rotating mass and DC-link *** in MATLAB/Simulink show that the inertia response is improved by adding a term proportional to the rate of change of frequency and by extracting the stored energy in the DC-link capacitors.

Bedrock aquifers and population growth in the Denver Basin, Colorado, USA

The Denver Basin bedrock aquifer system consists of Tertiary and Cretaceous age sedimentary rocks known as the Dawson, Denver, Arapahoe and Laramie-Fox Hills aquifers. The number of bedrock wells has increased from 12,000 in 1985 to over 33,700 in 2001 and the withdrawal of groundwater has caused water level declines in excess of 75 meters. Water level declines now range from 3 to 12 meters per year in the critical Arapahoe Aquifer. The groundwater supplies were once thought to be sufficient for 100 years but there is concern that they may be depleted in 10 to 15 years in areas on the west side of the basin. Groundwater is being mined from the aquifer system because the withdrawal through wells exceeds the rate of recharge. Increased groundwater withdrawal will cause further water level declines, increased costs to pump groundwater, and reduced yield from existing wells. In the Denver Basin, hydrologists have some capability to monitor declines in water levels for the Arapaho Aquifer, but generally have a limited ability to monitor water use. More complete and accurate water use data are needed to predict groundwater longevity for the Arapahoe Aquifer. The life of the Arapahoe Aquifer can be extended with artificial recharge using imported surface water, water reuse, restrictions on lawn watering, well permit restrictions and other conservation measures. Availability of groundwater may limit growth in the Denver Basin over the next 20 years unless residents are willing to pay for additional new sources of supply.

AIM:To assess the reliability of web-based version of ocular surface disease index in Chinese(C-OSDI)on clinically diagnosed dry eye disease(De)***:A total of 254 Chinese participants(51%male,129/254;mean age:27.90±9.06 y)with DeD completed paper-and web-based versions of C-OSDI questionnaires in a randomized crossover *** examination and DeD diagnosis were performed prior to the participants being invited to join the *** were randomly designated to either group A(paper-based first and webbased second)or group B(web-based first and paper-based second).Final data analysis included participants that had successfully completed both versions of the *** characteristics,test-retest reliability,and agreement of individual items,subscales,and total score were evaluated with intraclass correlation coefficients(ICC),Spearman rank correlation,Wilcoxon test and Rasch ***:Reliability indexes were adequate,Pearson correlation was greater than 0.8 and ICCs range was 0.827 to 0.982;total C-OSDI score was not statistically different between the two *** values of mean-squares fit statistics were very low compared to 1,indicating that the responses to the items by the model had a high degree of *** comparing the favorability 72%(182/254)of the participants preferred web-based ***:Web-based C-OSDI is reliable in assessing DeD and correlation with the paper-based version is significant in all subscales and overall total *** C-OSDI can be administered to assess individuals with DeD as participants predominantly favored online assessment.

Amount of polyhydramnios attributable to diabetes may be less than previously reported

AIM To evaluate the frequency and the quantity of polyhydramnios attributable to diabetes in *** The charts of patients with a four-quadrant amniotic fluid index(AFI) ≥ 20 cm and either a diagnosis of diabetes or a diabetes screening test during the index pregnancy were retrospectively reviewed. AFI was stratified into 5 categories and the frequency of diabetes was evaluated for each group. The frequency of polyhydramnios attributable to diabetes was compared to the frequency of polyhydramnios in the setting of fetal anomalies or no known cause. ReSULTS One thousand five hundred and forty-five patients were included in the study. eight point five percent(n = 131) had diabetes and no other cause for polyhydramnios. eleven point two percent(173) had antenatally diagnosed anomalies. For all categories of AFI except the largest(> 40.9 cm) the most common cause of polyhydramnios was idiopathic. In patients with diabetes the AFI was most likely to be between 26 cm and 35.9 *** The rate of polyhydramnios in this study is 8.5%. Patients with diabetes most commonly have mild polyhydramnios between 26 and 35.9 cm of fluid on a four-quadrant AFI.

Lessons learned from hydrothermal to hot dry rock exploration and production

In this paper,we investigate geothermal exploration and production in 189 hydrothermal projects and 42 hot dry rock projects around the *** hydrothermal fields for a working hydrothermal system to generate electricity should have the elements of heat source,water-saturated porous or fractured reservoir,caprock,heat transfer pathway,and good heat preservation condition and geothermal power energy intensity of 10-20 MW per km^(2)within at least 5 km^(2)area in tectonically active *** hot water or steam flow rate in this hydrothermal system is normally larger than 40 L/s with temperature of 150℃or *** power generated from enhanced geothermal system(eGS)in hot dry rock projects are generally less than 2 MW because the flow rate in most cases is much less than 40 L/s even with the hydraulic fractures using the modern stimulation technology learned from the oil and gas *** natural fracture in the subsurface is generally beneficial to the hydraulic fracturing and heat recovery in the hot dry ***,the hydraulic fracture parameters,injection rate and well spacing,drilling strategy should be properly designed to avoid the short-circuit between injector and producer and low heat *** the future,CO^(2)enhanced geothermal recovery associated with CO^(2)sequestration in the high temperature oil,gas,and geothermal fields maybe a good *** the other hand,both nearreal-time seismic monitoring to limit the pumping rate and the closed-loop of the eavor-Loop style system without hydraulic fracture can contribute greatly to heat recovery of hot dry rocks and mitigate the risks of the hydraulic fracturing induced ***,the hybrid solar and geothermal system performs better than the stand-alone geothermal system.
