Objective:To evaluate the effects of aqueous leaf extract of Adansonia(A.)digitata L on dexamethasone-induced testicular damage in male Wistar ***:Twenty adult male Wistar rats weighing 170-190 g were divided into four ***Ⅰreceived 0.5 mL of phosphate buffer orally for 28 days and served as the normal control group;groupⅡreceived 10 mg/kg of dexamethasone(a synthetic glucocorticoid)intraperitoneally for 7 days and 0.5 mL of phosphate buffer orally for 21 days,groupⅢreceived 10 mg/kg of dexamethasone for 7 days and 800 mg/kg of *** extract orally for 21 days;groupⅣreceived 10 mg/kg of dexamethasone for 7 days and 300 mg/kg of vitamin-E orally for 21 *** was administered intra-peritoneally for 7 days and all administration lasted for 28 *** rats were sacrificed by anesthesia with diethyl ether and the testes of each animal were *** testis was homogenized in 0.25 M sucrose at 4℃for biochemical and histological ***:Administration of dexamethasone significantly decreased body weight,glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase(G6PDH),lactate dehydrogenase(LDH),superoxide dismutase(SOD),and glutathione peroxidase(GPx)(Pcantly increased malondialdehyde(MDA)activities(Pcuolation and abnormal widening of the interstitial spaces were observed in the rats treated with ***,administration of *** significantly increased SOD,GPx,G6PDH,and LDH levels,significantly decreased MDA activities and improved the histoarchitecture of the testis(Pconclusions:*** may have an ameliorative effect on dexamethasone-induced testicular damage in Wistar rats because of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Evaluation of a point of care ultrasound curriculum for Indonesian physicians taught by fi rst-year medical students

BAcKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess the short-term efficacy of a 4-week ultrasound curriculum taught by American first-year medical students to general practitioners working in public health care clinics, or puskesmas, in Bandung, ***: We performed a prospective, observational study of Indonesian health care practitioners from public clinics in Bandung, Indonesia. These practitioners were enrolled in a 4-week ultrasound training course taught by first-year American medical students. A total of six sessions were held comprising of 38 ultrasound milestones. A pre-course and post-course written exam and practical exam was taken by each ***: We enrolled 41 clinicians in the course. The average pre-course exam score was 35.2% with a 2.4% pass rate, whereas the average post-course exam score was 82.0% with a 92.7% pass rate. The average practical score at the completion of the course was 83.2%(SD=0.145) with 82.9% of the class passing(score above 75.0%).cONcLUSION: Our data suggests that first-year medical students can effectively teach ultrasound to physicians in Indonesia using a 4-week intensive ultrasound training course. Future studies are needed to determine the amount of training required for proficiency and to evaluate the physicians' perceptions of the student-instructors' depth of knowledge and skill in point of care ultrasound.

Innovative boron nitride-doped propellants

The U.S. military has a need for more powerful propellants with balanced/stoichiometric amounts of fuel and oxidants. However, balanced and more powerful propellants lead to accelerated gun barrel erosion and markedly shortened useful barrel life. Boron nitride(BN) is an interesting potential additive for propellants that could reduce gun wear effects in advanced propellants(US patent pending 2015-026P). Hexagonal boron nitride is a good lubricant that can provide wear resistance and lower flame temperatures for gun barrels. Further, boron can dope steel, which drastically improves its strength and wear resistance, and can block the formation of softer carbides. A scalable synthesis method for producing boron nitride nano-particles that can be readily dispersed into propellants has been developed. Even dispersion of the nano-particles in a double-base propellant has been demonstrated using a solvent-based processing approach. Stability of a composite propellant with the BN additive was verified. In this paper, results from propellant testing of boron nitride nano-composite propellants are presented, including closed bomb and wear and erosion testing. Detailed characterization of the erosion tester substrates before and after firing was obtained by electron microscopy,inductively coupled plasma and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This promising boron nitride additive shows the ability to improve gun wear and erosion resistance without any destabilizing effects to the propellant. Potential applications could include less erosive propellants in propellant ammunition for large, medium and small diameter fire arms.

Detrital zircon U/Pb geochronology is a common tool used to resolve stratigraphic questions,inform basin evolution and constrain regional geological *** favourable circumstances,detrital zircon populations can contain a concomitant volcanic contribution that provides constraints on the age of ***,for non-volcanic settings,proving isolated detrital zircon grains are from contemporaneous and potentially remote volcanism is *** we use same grain(U-Th)/He thermochronology coupled with U/Pb geochronology to identify detrital zircon grains of contemporary volcanic origin.(U-Th)/He ages from cretaceous zircon grains in southern Australia define a single population with a weighted mean age of 104±6.1 *** from zircon U/Pb geochronology and palynology(~104.0-107.5 Ma).Detrital zircon trace-element geochemistry is consistent with a continental signature for parent rocks and coupled with detrital grain ages,supports derivation from a>2000 km distant early-to mid-cretaceous Whitsunday Volcanic Province in eastern ***,integration of biostratigraphy,single-grain zircon double-dating(geochronology and thermochronology)and grain geochemistry enhances fingerprinting of zircon source region and transport history.A distal volcanic source and rapid continental-scale transport to southern Australia is supported here.

BAcKGROUND Esophageal adenocarcinoma(EAc)and high-grade dysplasia(HGD)may appear in young patients with Barrett's esophagus(BE).However,characteristics of Barrett's-related neoplasia in this younger population remain *** To identify clinical characteristics that differ between young and old patients with early-stage Barrett's-related *** We conducted a retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database comprised of consecutive patients with early-stage EAc(pT1)and HGD at a tertiary-referral center between 2001 and *** characteristics,drug and risk factor exposures,clinicopathological staging of EAc/HGD and treatment outcomes[complete eradication of neoplasia(cE-N),complete eradication of intestinal metaplasia(cE-IM),recurrence of neoplasia and recurrence of intestinal metaplasia]were *** analyses were performed to identify factors that differed significantly between older and younger(≤50 years)*** We identified 450 patients with T1 EAc and HGD(74%and 26%,respectively);45(10%)were≤50 *** to the older group,young patients were more likely to present with ongoing gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD)symptoms(55%vs 38%,P=0.04)and to be obese(body mass index>30,48%vs 32%,P=0.04).Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that young patients were significantly more likely to have ongoing GERD symptoms[odds ratio(OR)2.00,95%confidence interval(cI)1.04-3.85,P=0.04]and to be obese(OR 2.06,95%cI 1.07-3.98,P=0.03)whereas the young group was less likely to have a smoking history(OR 0.39,95%cI 0.20-0.75,Pcompared to the old ***,there were no significant differences regarding tumor histology,cE-N,cE-IM,recurrence of neoplasia and recurrence of intestinal metaplasia(mean follow-up,44.3 mo).cONcLUSION While guidelines recommend BE screening in patients>50 years of age,younger patients should be considered for screening endoscopy if they suffer from obesity and GERD symptoms.

We presented a quantity judgment task that involved comparing two sequentially presented sets of items to preschoolers and chimpanzees using nearly identical procedures that excluded verbal instructions to children. Trial difficulty in this task reflected the ratio difference between sets of discrete items where larger ratios (e.g., 0.80 as from comparing 4 to 5) were more difficult than smaller ones (e.g., 0.50 as from comparing 4 to 8). children also completed verbal-based tasks probing the relationship between counting proficiency and performance on the quantity judgment task of sequentially presented identical sized items. Both species’ performance was best when ratios between comparison sets were small regardless of set size in all types of tasks. Generally, chimpanzees and older children performed better than younger children except at larger ratios. children’s counting proficiency was not related to success in choosing the larger of two quantities of identical-sized items. These results indicate that chimpanzees and children share an approximate number sense that is reflected through analog magnitude estimation when comparing quantities.

Balance Performance in Female collegiate Athletes

Proper balance is essential for athletes during competition and training as sport places different balance requirements on the human body. The purpose of the study was to analyze balance performance among female athletes using cOP (center of pressure) sway parameters. Twenty one NcAA (National collegiate Athletic Association) division I female athletes (soccer, volleyball and dance) completed the study. Static balance was assessed using UST (unilateral stance test) and dynamic balance was assessed using McT (motor control test) on the Neurocom Equitest. Sway velocities, root mean square sway and reaction time latencies were used to quantify balance. A one-way between subjects ANOVA (analysis of variance) was performed to analyze these balance parameters. Significant (p ces between groups were found and post hoc comparisons revealed that the volleyball and dance groups had better static balance compared to soccer players, while both soccer and volleyball groups had better dynamic balance compared to the dance group. The results from the study indicate two points: first, differences in balance performance among female athletes in different sporting discipline; second, there is no relationship between static and dynamic balance. This indicates that it may be more beneficial to assess and train for static and dynamic balance individually.

It takes two: potential therapies and insights involving microglia and macrophages in glioblastoma

Microglia and macrophages, two myeloid cell lineages with different origins, make up the majority of immune cells present in glioblastoma (GBM). However, much of the literature does not distinguish between microglia and macrophages, despite a growing body of evidence that demonstrates key structural and functional differences between the cell types. Furthermore, the current M1/M2 paradigm used to sub-classify microglia and macrophages has proven to be incomplete at best, with the growing amount of in vivo and genomic data incompatible with this dichotomy. Finally, a number of studies have already established that in the setting of the GBM tumor microenvironment, both microglia and macrophages are complicit in tumor progression. This review highlights the differences between microglia and macrophages, particularly in the context of GBM, and discusses at length several potential therapeutic strategies made possible by understanding specific pro-tumor and anti-tumor pathways in these myeloid populations. Ultimately, investigating the differences between microglia and macrophages offers insight into the progression of GBM, its marked resistance to current immunotherapy regimens, and future directions for new treatment modalities.

Seismic considerations for spent nuclear fuel storage in dry casks

To aid the United States Nuclear Regulatory commission,Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) was contracted to investigate the seismic behavior of typical dry cask storage systems. Parametric evaluations characterized the sensitivity of calculated cask response characteristics to input parameters. The parametric evaluation investigated two generic cask designs (cylindrical and rectangular),three different foundation types (soft soil,hard soil,and rock),and three different casks to pad coefficients of friction (0.2,0.55,0.8) for earthquakes with peak ground accelerations of 0.25g,0.6g,1.0g and 1.25g. A total of 1 165 analyses were completed,with regression analyses being performed on the resulting cask response data to determine relationships relating the mean (16 % and 84 % confidence intervals on the mean) to peak ground acceleration,peak ground velocity,and pseudo-spectral acceleration at 1 Hz and 5 % damping. In general,the cylindrical casks experienced significantly larger responses in comparison to the rectangular cask. The cylindrical cask experienced larger top of cask displacements,larger cask rotations (rocking),and more occurrences of cask toppling (the rectangular cask never toppled over). The cylindrical cask was also susceptible to rolling once rocking had been initiated,a behavior not observed in the rectangular cask. cask response was not overly sensitive to foundation type,but was significantly dependent on the response spectrum employed.
