Soil erosion prediction technology began over 70 years ago when Austin Zingg published a relationship between soil erosion(by water)and land slope and length,followed shortly by a relationship by Dwight Smith that expanded this equation to include conservation ***,it was nearly 20 years before this work's expansion resulted in the Universal Soil Loss Equation(USLE),perhaps the foremost achievement in soil erosion prediction in the last *** USLE has increased in application and complexity,and its usefulness and limitations have led to the development of additional technologies and new science in soil erosion research and *** among these new technologies is the Water Erosion Prediction Project(WEPP)model,which has helped to overcome many of the shortcomings of the USLE,and increased the scale over which erosion by water can be *** of application of erosion prediction include almost all land types:urban,rural,cropland,forests,rangeland,and construction *** applications of WEPP include prediction of radioactive material movement with soils at a superfund cleanup site,and near real-time daily estimation of soil erosion for the entire state of Iowa.

Background People with cystic fibrosis(cF)may develop clinically significant chronic respiratory infections with Pseudomonas aeruginosa(PA)and non-tuberculous mycobacteria(NTM).Open water has been suggested to be an important source for continuous or intermittent exposure to these *** date,there has been a paucity of studies examining the relationship between chronic PA and NTM infection in cF patients and surfaces waters,including blue *** aim of this study was therefore to examine the relationship between chronic pulmonary infection with PA and NTMs in children and adults with cF in European countries and area of surface waters,including blue *** European cF registry data detailing incidence of chronic PA and NTM infection in adults and children with cF in Europe(n=41,486 in 24 European countries)was correlated with surface water area data from the same countries(approx.678,278 km2)employing Spearman *** correlation of chronic PA infection in children and adults and surface water area were not significant(p=0.0680 and p=0.8448,respectively),as was NTM infection(p=0.7371 and p=0.0712,respectively).conclusions Acquistion of PA and its avoidance in people with cF is a complicated dynamic,not solely driven by close association with surface water,but through the integration of several other factors,including mitigations by people with cF to avoid high risk scenarios with surface *** study was unable to demonstrate a correlation between PA and NTM infection in people with cystic fibrosis and surface water area at a national *** patients should continue to be vigilant about potential infection risks posed by water and take evidence-based decisions regarding their behaviour around water to protect them for acquiring these organisms from these sources.

The Ponseti method has become the gold standard for the treatment of idiopathic clubfoot. Its safety and efficacy has been demonstrated extensively in the literature, leading to increased use around the world over the last two decades. This has been demonstrated by the increase in Ponseti related Pub Med publications from many countries. We found evidence of Ponseti activity in 113 of 193 United Nations members. The contribution of many organizations which provide resources to healthcare practitioners in low and middle income countries, as well as Ponseti champions and modern communication technology, have helped to spread the Ponseti method around the world. Despite this, there are many countries where the Ponseti method is not being used, as well as many large countries in which the extent of activity is unknown. With its low rate of complication, low cost, and high effectiveness,this method has unlimited potential to treat clubfoot in both developed and undeveloped countries. Our listing of countries who have not yet shown presence of Ponseti activity will help non-governmental organizations to target those countries which still need the most help.

Liquid-liquid extraction(LLE)using ionic liquids(ILs)-based methods to remove perfluoroalkyl chemicals(PFAcs),such as perfluorooctanoic acid(PFOA)and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid(PFOS),from wastewater,is an important ***,the lack of physicochemical and LLE data limits the selection of the most suitable ILs for the extraction of *** this work,1763 ILs for PFAcs extraction from water were systematically screened using cOSMOtherm to estimate the infinite dilution activity coefficient(lnγ^(∞))of PFOA and PFOS in water and *** evaluate the accuracy of cOSMOtherm,8 ILs with various lnγ^(∞)values were selected,and their extraction efficiency(E)and distribution coefficient(D_(exp))were measured *** results showed that the predicted lnγ^(∞)decreased as the increase of experimental extraction efficiency of PFOA or PFOS,while the tendency of predicted distribution coefficient(D_(pre))was consistent with the experimental(D_(exp))*** work provides an efficient basis for selecting ILs for the extraction of PFAcs from wastewater.

For more than six decades, chromic acid anodizing （cAA） has been the central process in the surface pre-treatment of aluminum for adhesively bonded aircraft structures. Unfortunately, this electrolyte contains hexavalent chromium （cr（VI））, a compound known for its toxicity and carcinogenic properties. To comply with the new strict international regulations, the cr（VI）-era will soon have to come to an end. Anodizing aluminum in acid electrolytes produces a self-ordered porous oxide layer. Although different acids can be used to create this type of structure, the excellent adhesion and corrosion resistance that is currently achieved by the complete cr（VI）-based process is not easily matched. This paper provides a critical overview and appraisal of proposed alternatives to cAA, including combinations of multiple anodizing steps, pre- and post anodizing treatments. The work is presented in terms of the modifications to the oxide properties, such as morphological features （e.g., pore size, barrier layer thickness） and surface chemistry, in order to evaluate the link between fundamental principles of adhesion and bond performance.

Machine learning(ML)is emerging as a powerful tool to predict the properties of materials,including *** ML models with knowledge of how glass composition affects short-range atomic structure has the potential to enhance the ability of composition-property models to extrapolate accurately outside of their training ***,we introduce an approach wherein statistical mechanics informs a ML model that can predict the non-linear composition-structure relations in oxide *** combined model offers an improved prediction compared to models relying solely on statistical physics or machine learning ***,we show that the combined model accurately both interpolates and extrapolates the structure of Na_(2)O–SiO_(2)***,the model is able to extrapolate predictions outside its training set,which is evidenced by the fact that it is able to predict the structure of a glass series that was kept fully hidden from the model during its training.

Three Australian tephritid fruit flies （Bactrocera tryoni - Q-fly, Bactrocera neohumeralis - NEO, and Bactrocera jarvisi - JAR） are promising models for genetic studies of pest status and invasiveness. The long history of ecological and physi- ological studies of the three species has been augmented by the development of a range of genetic and genomic tools, including the capacity for forced multigeneration crosses between the three species followed by selection experiments, a draft genome for Q-fly, and tissue- and stage-specific transcriptomes. The Q-fly and NEO species pair is of particular interest. The distribution of NEO is contained entirely within the wider distribution of Q-fly and the two species are ecologically extremely similar, with no known differences in pheromones, temperature tolerance, or host-fruit utilisation. However there are three clear differences be- tween them： humeral callus colour, complete pre-mating isolation based on mating time-of-day, and invasiveness. NEO is much less invasive, whereas in historical times Q-fly has invaded southeastern Australia and areas of Western Australia and the North- em Territory. In southeastern fruit-growing regions, microsatellites suggest that some of these outbreaks might derive from ge- netically differentiated populations overwintering in or near the invaded area. Q-fly and NEO show very limited genome diffe- rentiation, so comparative genomic analyses and QTL mapping should be able to identify the regions of the genome controlling mating time and invasiveness, to assess the genetic bases for the invasive strains of Q-fly, and to facilitate a variety of improve- ments to current sterile insect control strategies for that species

Despite demonstrating exciting potential for applications such as drug delivery and biosensing,the development of nanodevices for practical applications and broader use in research and education are still hindered by the time,effort,and cost associated with DNA origami *** and robust methods to perform and scale the DNA origami self-assembly process are critical to facilitate broader use and translation to industrial or clinical *** report a simple approach to fold DNA origami nanostructures that is fast,robust,and *** demonstrate fabrication at scales approximately 100-1,500-fold higher than typical *** further demonstrate an approach we termed low-cost efficient annealing (LEAN) self-assembly involving initial heating at 65 ℃ for 10 min,then annealing at 51 ℃ for 2 h,followed by brief quenching at 4 ℃ that leads to effective assembly of a range of DNA origami structures *** contrast to other methods for scaling DNA origami assembly,this approach can be carried out using cheap and widely available equipment (e.g.,hot plates,water baths,and laboratory burners) and uses standard recipes and materials so is readily applied to any existing or new DNA origami *** envision these methods can facilitate device development for commercial applications and facilitate broader use of DNA origami in research and education.
