Background:Different parts of Artemisia vulgaris L.(***)are ethno-medicinally used as an emmenagogue and for the treatment of ailments such as malaria fever,ulcers,and ***,anecdotal evidence shows that the plant is often substituted for Artemisia annua L.(***)by herbalists in Western Uganda due to similarities in their *** of medicinal plants and mislabelling of herbal products have been incriminated in toxicity and adverse health outcomes in traditional medicine *** safety continues to be a major issue with the use of herbal remedies,it becomes imperative therefore that medicinal plants should be correctly ***:This study focused on investigating the macroscopic,microscopic,physicochemical characteristics and phytochemical composition of *** leaves compared to *** to ease its correct ***:The results showed that there are some colour differences between the leaves of the two species,with a close arrangement of microscopic features but different leaf *** leaves of the two Artemisia species had similar tastes,but their shapes and colours(greenish-yellow for *** and dark green for ***)can be used by the local community to distinguish between *** artemisinin content was higher in *** leaves(1.72%)than in ***(1.43%),but the reverse was observed for the total flavonoid ***:This observation could justify the change in the use of *** by the indigenous community in western *** studies should consider the pharmacognostic comparison of *** with other species in the genus Artemisia and the use of molecular techniques such as DNA barcoding.

Assessing Weather Services for Rural Fishing and Farming Communities in Uganda

Climate-related hazards like drought are associated with loss of life and lead to food insecurity in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. Food insecurity, which affects more than 220 million sub-Saharan Africans, manifests as starvation that leads to more than 50% of children under the age of 5-years presenting as underweight for age in many communities on the continent. This household survey reports the means by which rural fisher folk and farming communities in Uganda gained access to early warning meteorological information. The survey covered five districts across different climatic zones in Uganda and recruited a total of 405 respondents with an average age of 41 years (SD 16). Economic activity was used to categorize each of the five districts into farming (crops and livestock) and fishing areas. The results showed that most respondents were unaware of drought as one of the climate-related hazards. Compared to respondents from the fishing communities, the respondents from farming communities were more likely to be receiving weather-related information (P-value < 0.01). There were 204/405 (50.37%) female respondents who, compared to male respondents, were less likely to have access to weather information, less willing to pay for weather information, and less likely to have and/or own devices like a radio for receiving weather information. The survey demonstrated that: 1) there were gaps in the knowledge about climate-related hazards, 2) there is a need for additional interventions targeting fisher folk communities access timely weather information, and 3) introducing user paid access to weather information may increase climate-related gender-based disparities.

Objective:To conducted a spatial analysis for stratification of priority malaria control areas in Kahnuj County,as part of field ***:Information of Health Centers of Kahnuj County has been used for stratification retrospectively.A knowledge,attitudes and practices(KAP) study was arranged to provide preliminary information about the knowledge,attitude and practice related to malaria in the ***:Numbers of malaria cases has been decreased in year *** were five important vectors of malaria in this region including:Anopheles stephensi (***),Anopheles dthali(***).Anopheles superpictus(***),Anophels culicifacies(***),and Anopheles Jluviatilis(***),but majority of malaria cases in this county was related to Plasmodium vivax(***).Educational levels of community were 38% ,20% ,10% and 32% for illiterate,primary,secondary and university levels,respectively. Delayed bone defect repairs lead to severe health and socioeconomic impacts on patients. Hence, there are increasing demands for medical interventions to promote bone defect healing. Recombinant proteins such as BMP-2 have been recognized as one of the powerful osteogenic substances that promote mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to osteoblast differentiation and are widely applied clinically for bone defect repairs. However, recent reports show that BMP-2 treatment has been associated with clinical adverse side effects such as ectopic bone formation, osteolysis and stimulation of inflammation. Here, we have identified one new osteogenic protein, named ‘HKUOT-S2’ protein, from Dioscorea opposita Thunb. Using the bone defect model, we have shown that the HKUOT-S2 protein can accelerate bone defect repair by activating the mTOR signaling axis of MSCs-derived osteoblasts and increasing osteoblastic biomineralization. The HKUOT-S2 protein can also modulate the transcriptomic changes of macrophages, stem cells, and osteoblasts, thereby enhancing the crosstalk between the polarized macrophages and MSCs-osteoblast differentiation to facilitate osteogenesis. Furthermore, this protein had no toxic effects in vivo. We have also identified HKUOT-S2 peptide sequence TKSSLPGQTK as a functional osteogenic unit that can promote osteoblast differentiation in vitro. The HKUOT-S2 protein with robust osteogenic activity could be a potential alternative osteoanabolic agent for promoting osteogenesis and bone defect repairs. We believe that the HKUOT-S2 protein may potentially be applied clinically as a new class of osteogenic agent for bone defect healing.

目的研究雌激素(ER)和雄激素(AR)受体与泌乳素腺瘤临床表现之间的相关关系,探讨泌乳素腺瘤发病机理中ER和AR表达可能存在的性别差异。方法搜集同济医院2000年12月～2001年12月期间经蝶窦手术的30例泌乳素腺瘤病例,实验分为两部分。第一部分：回顾性分析了病人性别、年龄、血浆泌乳素水平、肿瘤的大小、侵袭性、CT和MRI以及手术发现、术前使用溴隐亭情况和肿瘤复发等临床资料,第二部分：选取30例中的20例泌乳素腺瘤标本,用免疫组化技术检测了ER和AR的表达。运用卡方检测行统计学分析泌乳素腺瘤的各种临床特点和ER、AR表达间的关系。结果统计分析结果显示ER和AR的表达与泌乳素腺瘤的特征如：性别、年龄、肿瘤体积、肿瘤的侵袭性无关(P＞0.05)。结论泌乳素腺瘤的性别、年龄、肿瘤体积、肿瘤的侵袭性程度不会影响ER和AR的表达。男性泌乳素腺瘤较女性患者更具侵袭性。单纯手术治疗巨大腺瘤或血浆泌乳素＞200ng／mL的肿瘤疗效并不理想。手术后溴隐亭治疗的应用与患者的性别无关,但与手术前肿瘤的体积和泌乳素水平相关。

Modulation of Root Signals in Relation to Stomatal Sensitivity to Root-sourced Abscisic Acid in Drought-affected Plants

Stomatal sensitivity to root signals induced by soil drying may vary between environments and plant species. This is likely to be a result of the interactions and modulations ámong root signals. As a stress signal, abscisic acid （ABA） plays a central role in root to shoot signaling, pH and hydraulic signals may interact with ABA signals and thus, jointly regulate stomatal responses to changed soil water status, pH itself can be modified by several factors, among which the chemical compositions in the xylem stream and the live cells surrounding the vessels play crucial roles. In addition to the xylem pH, more attention should be paid to the direct modulation of leaf apoplastic pH, because many chemical compositions might strongly modify the leaf apoplastic pH while having no significant effect on the xylem pH. The direct modulation of the ABA signal intensity may be more important for the regulation of stomatal responses to soil drying than the ABA signal per se. The ABA signal is also regulated by the ABA catabolism and the supply of precursors to the roots if a sustained root to shoot communication of soil drying operates at the whole plant level. More importantly, ABA catabolism could play crucial roles in the determination of the fate of the ABA signal and thereby control the stomatal behavior of the root-sourced ABA signal.

Differential gene expression profile of Buyanghuanwu decoction in rats with ventricular remodeling post-myocardial infarction

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of Buyanghuanwu decoction(BYHWD) on gene expression in ventricular remodeling post-myocardial infarction in ***: Animal models of myocardial infarction were established by permanent ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery. Echocardiography measurements were performed after the treatment of BYHWD(18 g·kg-1 collagen was observ·d-1) for 90 *** by mallory trichrome staining. Capillary density was quantified by using Factor rentially expⅧre immunohistochemical *** genes were explored by a short-read sequencing technology combined with a tag-based digital gene expression profiling(DGE)system. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction detecting system(q PCR) was used to validate the sequencing results. After assembling the gene information from Sham, model and BYHWD groups, we constructed three DGE libraries based on each group. The sequencing of three libraries generated 66 000-73 000 unique tags, which were mapped to reference sequences for annotation of expressed ***: Among them, 511 and 352 differentially expressed genes were found in comparison with sham/model and model/BYHWD, respectively. Fifty-five genes exhibited reversed direction of gene expression differences between Sham/Model and Model/BYHWD groups. We found that transforming growth factor beta receptor-1, junctophilin-2,monocyte chemotactic protein 1, neuropeptide Y,arachidonate 5-Lipoxygenase, arachidonate 15-Lipoxygenase were significantly modulated, which suggested the involvement of these genes in BYHWD ***: The DGE profiling data provide comprehensive gene expression information at the transcriptional level that could facilitate our understanding of the pharmacological mechanisms of BYHWD in ventricular remodeling post-myocardial infarction.
