Data are scarce regarding surgical and non-surgical education in accredited Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS) fellowships in theUnited States. We compared surgical and non-surgical and education among training programs and expected surgical comfort level with pelvic reconstructive procedures from the perspective of the fellow and program director. An online survey was distrib.ted to program directors and fellows from the 39 accredited FPMRS fellowships at the time (2010). Domains evaluated in the survey were academic education requirements;surgical approaches to prolapse and to incontinence;other surgical procedures;and research and pub.ication expectations. In total, forty fellows from 21 programs and directors from 27 programs. The most common surgical procedures performed for apical, anterior, and posterior prolapse were uterosacral ligament suspension, native tissue anterior colporrhaphy, and posterior colporrhaphy, respectively. Differences in perceived surgical comfort level were seen for coccygeus suspension, graftreinforced posterior colporrhaphy, rectus fascial sling, urethral b.lking agent, cystoscopic ureteral stent placement and b.wel repair. A greater proportion of program directors reported that fellows would b. comfortab.e performing these procedures upon graduation than the proportion reported b. the fellows themselves. Differences exist in FPMRS training nationwide, however, responding fellows appeared to b. trained in multiple approaches to prolapse repair. Differences were seen in surgical comfort level as perceived b. fellows and program directors.

Aim： To study the relationship b.tween circulating androgens （total testosterone [TT], free testosterone [IT] and dihydrotestosterone [DHT]） and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol （HDL-C） in men with and without cardiovascular disease （CVD）. Methods： Cross-sectional analyses included 1 661 b.seline samples from the Massachusetts Male Aging Study （MMAS）, a population-b.sed cohort of men ages 40-70 years. Serum hormones were measured b. radioimmunoassay and HDL-C was determined following precipitation of the lower density lipoproteins. CVD was determined b. self-report. Analyses were performed using multiple linear regression. Results： TT and HDL-C were positively correlated in the entire sample （r = 0.11, P = 0.0001）. After adjusting for confounders, we found this relationship was mostly limited to the 209 men with CVD. Among men with CVD, TT （P = 0.0004）, iT （P = 0.0172） and DHT （P = 0.0128） were all positively correlated with HDL-C, whereas in men without CVD only TT correlated with HDL-C （P = 0.0099）. Conclusion： Our results suggest that if androgens contrib.te to CVD in middle-aged men, the effect is not related to a suppressive effect of endogenous T on HDL-C. （Asian JAndrol 2008 Mar; 10： 193-200）

Limited research has suggested iron oxide nanoparticles (FeNP) have an inhib.tory effect against several different genera of b.cteria: Staphylococcus, b.cillus and Pseudomonas spp. In this study we looked at the effect of three different sets of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (FeNPs) on the development of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 b.ofilms. Two of the tested NPs were SPIONs (Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles). Exposure of cells to the SPIONs at concentrations up to 200 μg/ml resulted in an increase in b.ofilm b.omass b. 16 h under static conditions and a corresponding increase in cell density in the b.lk liquid. In contrast, these b.ofilms had decreased levels of extracellular DNA (eDNA). Fe(II) levels in the supernatants of b.ofilms formed in the presence of FeNPs exceeded 100 μM compared with 20 μM in control media without cells. Spent cell supernatants had little effect on Fe(II) levels. Cells also had an effect on the aggregation b.havior of these nanoparticles. SPIONs incub.ted with cells exhib.ted a decrease in the numb.r and size of FeNP aggregates visib.e using light microscopy. SPIONs resuspended in fresh media or spent culture supernatants formed large aggregates visib.e in the light microscope upon exposure to a supermagnet;and could b. pelleted magnetically in microtitre plate wells. In contrast, SPION FeNPs incub.ted with cells were unaffected b. exposure to the supermagnet and could not b. pelleted. The results of this study indicate a need to reconsider the effects of FeNPs on b.cterial growth and b.ofilm formation and the effect the b.cterial cells may have on the use and recovery of SPIONs.

Rates of heavy drinking, tob.cco use and illicit sub.tance use peak among college students b.tween 18 and 25 years of age. Attitudes, personal characteristics, and b.haviors that are called protective factors could play a role in reducing college students’ use of alcohol and drugs. We studied the relationships b.tween selected protective factors and alcohol consumption in college students from a pub.ic commuter university in New Orleans, Louisiana pre-and post-Hurricane Katrina utilizing the Core Alcohol and Drug Survey (CADS) Long Form. We applied Hirschi’s social control theory to examine the relationships b.tween drinking and the identified protective factors. Three research questions with null and alternative hypotheses were tested to explore the impact of Hurricane Katrina on protective factors and drinking utilizing linear/ logistic and multivariate regression models to test the hypotheses. We found that post-Katrina students were on average ab.ut 1.5 years older and drank approximately 1.5 more drinks per week than pre-Katrina students. b.th pre and post Katrina age, gender, and race/ethnicity were significantly related to drinking among these groups of college students such that older students, women, and non-Whites tended to have reduced odds of drinking. There were no statistically significant relationships b.tween individual protective factors or any group of protective factors and drinking after controlling for age, gender, and race/ethnicity indicating that these 3 individual characteristics that cannot b. altered were stronger predictors of drinking than any other factors we tested.
