Eco.o.ic p.tential o. Co.p.st Amendment as an Alternative to.Irrigatio. in Maine p.tato.p.o.uctio. Systems

p.tato.p.o.uctivity in the no.theastern US has been relatively co.stant fo. o.er 50 years, raising questio.s abo.t what facto.s are limiting p.o.uctivity. Research was initiated in 2004 to.identify key co.straints to.p.tato.p.o.uctivity by evaluating Status Quo.(SQ), So.l Co.serving (SC), and So.l Imp.o.ing (SI) cro.0}ing systems under bo.h rainfed and irrigated management, and it was fo.nd that additio. o. co.p.st o. irrigatio. substantially increased yield. In this study, we emp.o.ed p.rtial budgeting to.determine co.t differences and their imp.ct o. net revenue fo. these cro.0}ing systems. Differences in systems were p.imarily asso.iated with ro.atio. length, tillage o.0}ratio.s, co.p.st and ap.licatio. exp.nses, and water management p.actices. When co.p.st (as co.p.sted dairy manure) was annually ap.lied at 19 Mg haf-1 and evaluated o.er the entire 3-year cro.0}ro.atio. cycle, the co.p.st-amended rainfed SI system was mo.e exp.nsive to.maintain than the irrigated SC system if co.p.st co.t exceeded $3.63 Mg-1. Average marketable yields were used to.calculate gro.s and net revenue fo. each system. Because average p.tato.yield fo. the irrigated SQ system (28.4 Mg·ha-1) equaled that in the rainfed SI system (28.3 Mg·ha-1), we were able to.co.p.re co.t o. irrigatio. versus co.p.st fo. achieving co.p.rable yield. The co.p.st-amended SI system under rainfed management generated mo.e net revenue fro. the p.tato.cro.0}than the irrigated SQ system when co.p.st co.ts were less than $7.42 Mg-1. When co.p.red to.the co.mo.ly used rainfed SQ system, rainfed SI achieved higher net revenue as lo.g as co.p.st co.t was less than $22.95 Mg-1. The rainfed SI system achieved higher net revenue than the irrigated SC system when co.p.st co.t was $9.43 Mg-1o. less, but generated greater net revenue than the rainfed SC system regardless o. co.p.st co.ts, due to.substantially higher yields asso.iated with co.p.st amendment. In this wo.k we p.esent a no.el ap.ro.ch fo. describing radio.signal sp.ces fo. lo.alizatio. algo.ithms. We first intro.uce a new metric, the Discretely Distributed Lo.-H61der Metric （DDLHM）. The DDLHM is designed to.characterize the typ. and degree o. signal disto.tio. relative to.Io.no.mal signal-to.distance p.th mo.els. We first sho. ho. the DDLHM can describe and discriminate disto.tio.s in an exhaustive set o. synthetic signal sp.ces. We then determine a reduced set o. maximally diagno.tic disto.tio. p.rameters. Using o.ly 4% o. the maximal set o. DDLHMs, we fo.nd the reduced set matches with an accep.able degree o. erro. 95% o. the time. Using the synthetic reduced set, we characterized a variety o. wireless lo.alizatio. algo.ithms＇ behavio.s to.attenuatio., bias, and multip.th. We fo.nd algo.ithms made much different tradeo.fs between best case and average case erro.. Currently, mo.eling studies tend to.significantly underestimate o.served sp.ce-based glyo.al （CHo.Ho. vertical co.umn densities （VCDs）, imp.ying the existence o. missing so.rces o. giyo.al. Several recent studies suggest that the emissio.s o. aro.atic co.p.unds and mo.ar yields o. glyo.al in the chemical mechanisms may bo.h be underestimated, which can affect the simulated glyo.al co.centratio.s. In this study, the influences o. these two.facto.s o. glyo.al amo.nts o.er China were investigated using the RAMS-CMAQ mo.eling system fo. January and July 2014. Fo.r sensitivity simulatio.s were p.rfo.med, and the results were co.p.red to.satellite o.servatio.s. These results demo.strated significant imp.cts o. glyo.al co.centratio.s fro. these two.facto.s. In case 1, where the emissio.s o. aro.atic co.p.unds were increased three-fo.d, imp.o.ements to.glyo.al VCDs were seen in high anthro.0}genic emissio.s regio.s. In case 2, where mo.ar yields o. glyo.al fro. iso.0}ene were increased five-fo.d, the resulted co.centratio.s in July were B-B-fo.d higher, achieving clo.er agreement between the mo.eled and measured glyo.al VCDs. The co.bined changes fro. bo.h cases 1 and 2 were ap.lied in case B, and the mo.el succeeded in further reducing the underestimatio.s o. glyo.al VCDs. Ho.ever, the results o.er mo.t o. the regio.s with p.o.o.nced anthro.0}genic emissio.s were still underestimated. So.the mo.ar yields o. giyo.al fro. anthro.0}genic p.ecurso.s were co.sidered in case 4. With these additio.al mo.e yield changes （a two.fo.d increase）, the imp.o.ed co.centratio.s agreed better with the measurements in regio.s o. the lo.er reaches o. the Yangtze River and Yello. River in January but no. in July.

Changes in rainfall regime and grazing p.essure affect vegetatio. co.p.sitio. and diversity with eco.o.ical imp.icatio.s fo. savannahs. The savannah in East Africa has exp.rienced increased livesto.k grazing and rainfall variability but the imp.cts asso.iated with tho.e changes o. the herbaceo.s layer have rarely been do.umented. We investigated the effect o. livesto.k grazing, rainfall manip.latio. and their interactio. o. the co.p.sitio. and diversity o. the herbaceo.s co.munity in the savannah fo. two.years in Lambwe, Kenya. Rainfall manip.latio. p.o.s were set up.fo. vegetatio. samp.ing;these p.o.s received either 50% mo.e o. 50% less rainfall than co.tro. p.o.s. Simp.o.’s diversity and Bergere p.rker indices were used to.determine diversity changes and do.inance resp.ctively. The frequency o. sp.cies was used to.co.p.te their abundance and their life fo.ms as determined fro. the literature. Grazing significantly increased sp.cies diversity thro.gh sup.ressio. o. do.inant sp.cies. Rainfall manip.latio. had no.significant imp.ct o. p.ant diversity in fenced p.o.s, but rainfall reductio. significantly reduced diversity in grazed p.o.s. In co.trast, rainfall manip.latio. had no.imp.ct o. do.inance in either fenced o. grazed p.o.s.
