Challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson’s disease:Parkinson’s disease(PD)is an increasingly prevalent neurodegenerative disease,at first sight primarily characterized by motor symptoms,although non-motor symptoms also constitute a major part of the overall ***,this disease cannot be diagnosed reliably until a large part of the vulnerable dopaminergic neurons has been irretrievably lost,and the disease progresses *** biological criteria for PD have been proposed recently and might eventually improve early diagnosis,but they require further validation,and their use will initially be restricted to a research environment(Darweesh et al.,2024).

Due to the complex interplay between composition,synthesis parameters and the performance of thermoelectric materials,the optimization of thermoelectric materials needs to be complemented by modelling.A relatively simple and thus popular approach is the so called single parabolic band model,which allows for an efficient optimization of the material properties and a benchmarking of different materials based on relatively few,well available experimental *** complex band structures are common for high performance materials,single parabolic band modelling is also employed with apparent success for material systems where the underlying assumptions are not well *** order to assess the validity of a single parabolic band analysis for such systems,the thermoelectric properties for two model systems are calculated:one with a single band that is twofold degenerate and one with a light and a heavy *** if the density of states masses and the scattering potentials are kept identical,the transport properties and in particular the Hall coefficients differ significantly,which leads to an incorrectly determined carrier *** the carrier concentration is the base for the single parabolic band analysis,all the quantities obtained from it(optimum carrier concentration,effective mass,deformation potential)are determined incorrectly as well.

Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tNGCs). However, the use of tNGCs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tNGC would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tNGCs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tNGCs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tNGCs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tNGCs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tNGCs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tNGCs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tNGCs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. Patterned covalent functionalization of graphitic surfaces(GSs)is of interest in the development of devices and nanocomposite *** contrast to the strategies using external templates or control for realizing patterned covalent functionalization of GSs,here,we present a self-templated strategy by exploiting the synergistic effects of chemical and physical functionalization of ***,a diazonium salt is reduced by potassium iodide(KI)in dimethyl sulfoxide while the solution is in contact with a GS,resulting in its spatially heterogeneous,that is,chemical and physical,*** heterogeneous functionalization leads to a quasiperiodic pattern of striped corrals with three equivalent orientations in the covalent *** formation of the striped corrals is ascribed to physisorbed domains formed by self-assembled N_(2),which is produced in situ during the reduction of the diazonium salt,preventing the covalent functionalization.

In custom manufacturing time-to-market is of overriding importance. Thus, asymmetric hydrogenation will be applied only if an appropriate catalyst can be found in a very short period of time. For this reason we have build up a full-scale capability for High Throughput Experimentation, encompassing several robot systems. As ligand synthesis was the last remaining barrier we have explored, together with the University of Groningen, the use of simple monodentate ligands, such as MonoPhosTM. These ligands can be synthesised in two chemical steps, from BINOL, PCl3 and an ***, very high enantioselectivities can be obtained in the asymmetric hydrogenation of α-and β-dehydro-amino acids and esters, aromatic enamides, itaconic acid and ester[1]. See Scheme 1 and 2(at page 830).

Large scale mapping of forest attributes using heterogeneous sets of airborne laser scanning and National Forest Inventory data

Today steel is produced by two steelmaking processes, the basic oxygen furnace and the electric arc furnace, Three types of iron input materials for both processes are liquid hot metal or in solidified form as pig iron, direct reduced iron （DRI） and hot briquetted iron （HB1） as well as steel scrap. Hot metal, pig iron, DRI and HBI are virgin iron materials, which have to be produced from iron ore by the so-called ironmaking technologies. New ironmaking processes based on fluidized bed technology have been developed in the last two decades. The main advantage of these technologies is that fine ore can be directly used in the processes and prior treatment such as sintering or pelletizing can be avoided which is required for the established processes. Theoretical aspects for reduction of fine iron oxides in a fluidized bed reactor system will be explained. The fluidized bed reducing technologies utilized in the most advanced new ironmaking processes for direct use of fine ore, FINMET, Circored, FINEX~ and Hismelt will be compared.

For more than six decades, chromic acid anodizing （CAA） has been the central process in the surface pre-treatment of aluminum for adhesively bonded aircraft structures. Unfortunately, this electrolyte contains hexavalent chromium （Cr（VI））, a compound known for its toxicity and carcinogenic properties. To comply with the new strict international regulations, the Cr（VI）-era will soon have to come to an end. Anodizing aluminum in acid electrolytes produces a self-ordered porous oxide layer. Although different acids can be used to create this type of structure, the excellent adhesion and corrosion resistance that is currently achieved by the complete Cr（VI）-based process is not easily matched. This paper provides a critical overview and appraisal of proposed alternatives to CAA, including combinations of multiple anodizing steps, pre- and post anodizing treatments. The work is presented in terms of the modifications to the oxide properties, such as morphological features （e.g., pore size, barrier layer thickness） and surface chemistry, in order to evaluate the link between fundamental principles of adhesion and bond performance.
