Background:The epidemiological data on post-burn growth,body composition and motor devel-opment is ambiguous and *** aim of this systematic review was therefore to summarize the current body of evidence on post-burn growth,body composition and motor development in ***:A literature search was conducted in PubMed,EMBASE and Web of Science up to March *** considered observational studies that reported(1)metrics on weight,height,body composition,bone mineral content,bone mineral density or motor development,in(2)paediatric burn patients and(3)published in a peer-reviewed ***:A total of 16 studies were *** of the included studies used quantitative methods,but with differing methodology:prospective cohort studies(n=8),retrospective chart reviews(n=3),case-control studies(n=2),cross sectional studies(n=2)and a retrospective cohort study(n=1).When combined,the included studies represented 2022 paediatric burn patients,with a mean age of 7.7(±3.2)*** average burn sizewas 52.8%(±12.7)of the total body surface *** outcome measures included weight(n=12),height(n=7),muscular strength(n=4),bone mineral content(n=5),bone mineral density(n=5),body mass index(n=3),fat mass(n=5),lean body mass(n=7)and fine and gross motor development(n=1).conclusions:following an initial decline,patients’growth and motor development started to recover during the first or second year ***,burns may have a profound and prolonged effect on the paediatric burn patients’muscular strength,bone mineral content and lean body *** should be noted that the vast majority of studies included only patients with burns covering≥30%total body surface *** evidence presented in this review may thus not be representative of the whole paediatric burn population.

Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tNGcs). However, the use of tNGcs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tNGc would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tNGcs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tNGcs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tNGcs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tNGcs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tNGcs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tNGcs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tNGcs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. Effect of competing solutes on arsenic(Ⅴ) adsorption using iron and aluminum oxides

The study focused on the effect of several typical competing solutes on removal of arsenic with fe2O3 and Al2O3. The test results indicate that chloride, nitrate and sulfate did not have detectable effects, and that selenium（Ⅳ）（Se（Ⅳ）） and vanadium（Ⅴ）（V（Ⅴ）） showed slight effects on the adsorption of As（Ⅴ） with fe2O3. The results also showed that adsorption of As（Ⅴ） on A12O3 was not affected by chloride and nitrate anions, but slightly by Se（Ⅳ） and V（Ⅴ） ions. Unlike the adsorption of As（Ⅴ） with fe2O3, that with fe2O3 was affected by the presence of sulfate in water solutions. Both phosphate and silica have significant adverse effects on the adsorption of As（Ⅴ） adsorption with fe2O3 and Al2O3. compared to the other tested anions, phosphate anion was found to be the most prominent solute affecting the As（Ⅴ） adsorption with fe2O3 and Al2O3. In general, fe2O3 has a better performance than Al2O3 in removal of As（Ⅴ） within a water environment where multi competing solutes are present.

Noni juice is not hepatotoxic

Noni juice （Morinda citrifolia） has been approved for use as a safe food within the European Union, following a review of safety. Since approval, three cases of acute hepatitis in Austrian noni juice consumers have been published, where a causal link is suggested between the liver dysfunction and ingestion of anthraquinones from the plant. Measurements of liver function in a human clinical safety study of TAHITIAN NONI Juice, as well as subacute and subchronic animal toxicity tests revealed no evidence of adverse liver effects at doses many times higher than those reported in the case studies. Additionally, M. citrifolia anthraquinones occur in the fruit in quantities too small to be of any toxicological significance. further, these do not have chemical structures capable of being reduced to reactive anthrone radicals, which were implicated in previous cases of herbal hepototoxicity. The available data reveals no evidence of liver toxicity.

The contribution of chronic peripheral inflammation to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases is an outstanding question. Sustained activation of the peripheral innate and adaptive immune systems occurs in the context of a broad array of disorders ranging from chronic infectious diseases to autoimmune and metabolic diseases. In addition, progressive systemic inflammation is increasingly recognized during aging. Peripheral immune cells could potentially modulate the cellular brain environment via the secretion of soluble molecules. There is an ongoing debate whether peripheral immune cells have the potential to migrate into the brain under certain permissive circumstances. In this perspective, we discuss the possible contribution of chronic peripheral inflammation to the pathogenesis of age-related neurodegenerative diseases with a focus on microglia, the resident immune cells of the brain parenchyma.

Sucrose transporters and plasmodesmal regulation in passive phloem loading

An essential step for the distribution of carbon throughout the whole plant is the loading of sugars into the phloem in source organs. In many plants, accumulation of sugars in the sieve element-companion cell （SE-cc） complex is mediated and regulated by active processes. However, for poplar and many other tree species, a passive symplasmic mechanism of phloem loading has been proposed, characterized by symplasmic continuity along the pre-phloem pathway and the absence of active sugar accumulation in the SE-cc complex. A high overall leaf sugar concentration is thought to enable diffusion of sucrose into the phloem. In this review, we critically evaluate current evidence regarding the mechanism of passive syrnplasmic phloem loading, with a focus on the potential influence of active sugar transport and plasmo- desmal regulation. The limited experimental data, com- bined with theoretical considerations, suggest that a concomitant operation of passive symplasmic and active phloem loading in the same minor vein is unlikely. However, active sugar transport could well play an important role in how passively loading plants might modulate the rate of sugar export from leaves. Insights into the operation of this mechanism has direct implications for our understanding of how these plants utilize assimilated carbon.

Patient-reported outcomes measures form the backbone of outcomes evaluation in orthopaedics,with most of the literature now relying on these scoring tools to measure change in patient health *** patient-reported information is increasingly collected routinely by orthopaedic providers but use of the data is typically restricted to academic *** in electronic data capture and the outcome tools themselves now allow use of this data as part of the clinical *** review evaluates the role of patient reported outcomes data as a tool to enhance daily orthopaedic clinical practice,and documents how developments in electronic outcome measures,computer-adaptive questionnaire design and instant graphical display of questionnaire can facilitate enhanced patientclinician shared decision making.

Single-model uncertainty quantification in neural network potentials does not consistently outperform model ensembles

Neural networks(NNs)often assign high confidence to their predictions,even for points far out of distribution,making uncertainty quantification(UQ)a *** they are employed to model interatomic potentials in materials systems,this problem leads to unphysical structures that disrupt simulations,or to biased statistics and dynamics that do not reflect the true *** UQ techniques can find new informative data and drive active learning loops for robust ***,a variety of UQ techniques,including newly developed ones,exist for atomistic simulations and there are no clear guidelines for which are most effective or suitable for a given *** this work,we examine multiple UQ schemes for improving the robustness of NN interatomic potentials(NNIPs)through active *** particular,we compare incumbent ensemble-based methods against strategies that use single,deterministic NNs:mean-variance estimation(MVE),deep evidential regression,and Gaussian mixture models(GMM).We explore three datasets ranging from in-domain interpolative learning to more extrapolative out-of-domain generalization challenges:rMD17,ammonia inversion,and bulk silica *** is measured across multiple metrics relating model error to *** experiments show that none of the methods consistently outperformed each other across the various *** remained better at generalization and for NNIP robustness;MVE only proved effective for in-domain interpolation,while GMM was better out-of-domain;and evidential regression,despite its promise,was not the preferable alternative in any of the *** broadly,cost-effective,single deterministic models cannot yet consistently match or outperform ensembling for uncertainty quantification in NNIPs.
