Phylogenetic inferences in Prunus （Rosaceae） using chloroplast ndhF and nuclear ribosomal ITS sequences

Sequences of the chloroplast ndhF gene and the nuclear ribosomal ITS regions are employed to recon-struct the phylogeny of Prunus (Rosaceae), and evaluate the classification schemes of this genus. The two data sets are congruent in that the genera Prunus s.l. and Maddenia form a monophyletic group, with Maddenia nested within Prunus. However, the ndhF data set is incongruent with the ITS data supporting two major groups within Prunus: one consisting of subgenera Laurocerasus (including Pygeum) and Padus as well as the genus Maddenia and another of subgenera Amygdalus, Cerasus, and Prunus. The ITS data, on the other hand, support a clade composed of subgenera Amygdalus and Prunus and Prunus sect. Microcerasus in addition to a paraphyletic grade of subgenera Laurocerasus and Padus (and the genus Maddenia) taxa. In general, the subgeneric classifications of Prunus s.l. are not supported. The ITS and ndhF phylogenies differ mainly in interspecific relationships and the relative position of the Padus/Laurocerasus group. Both ITS and ndhF data sets suggest that the formerly recog-nized genus Pygeum is polyphyletic and that the distinction of the subgenera Padus and Laurocerasus is not supported. The biogeographic interactions of the temperate and tropical members in the Padus/Laurocera- sus/Maddenia alliance including Pygeum are shown to be highly dynamic and complex.

Shear properties of thawed natural permafrost by bender elements

Thawed permafrost could cause a serious stability problem for foundations and oil-wells in cold regions. A non-damage testing procedure, employing the Bender Element Method, was used for permafrost samples collected from a continuous frozen core obtained from the North Slope of Alaska, USA. The wave velocity and modulus of thawed permafrost were investigated on various isotropic confining pressure from 0 kPa to 400 kPa per 100 kPa. The received shear wave propagation was recorded, and the elastic wave theory was used to calculate shear modulus. Finally, the shear modulus affected by confining pressure, water content and dry density were analyzed and discussed, and a regression formulation of shear modulus based on the Janbu Model for thawed silty and sandy permafrost were proposed and validation.

A Probabilistic Analysis on the Harmonic Cancellation Characteristics of the Scott Transformer

The Scott transformer is widely used in electric railway systems when there are two unbalanced single-phase loads as this transformer can reduce unbalance currents. This paper investigates whether or not the Scott transformer can also reduce harmonic current. Our study shows that it can reduce the harmonic current when single-phase loads have identical harmonic characteristics. This harmonic reduction occurs through the cancellation of harmonic currents of single-phase loads in the transformer windings. Our studies also show that there is some degree of cancelation even when the loads do not have identical harmonic characteristics. The cancellation depends on load balance factor and harmonic order.

Synergy of staggered stacking confinement and microporous defect fixation for high‐density atomic Fe^(Ⅱ)‐N_(4)oxygen reduction active sites

The development of high‐performance nonprecious metal catalysts(NPMCs)to supersede Pt‐based catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells is highly desirable but remains *** this paper,we present a pyrolysis strategy for spatial confinement and active‐site fixation using iron phthalocyanine(FePc),phthalocyanine(Pc)and Zn salts as *** the obtained carbon‐based NPMC with a hierarchically porous nanostructure of thin‐layered carbon nanosheets,nearly 100%of the total Fe species are Fe^(Ⅱ)‐N_(4) active *** contrast,pyrolyzing FePc alone forms Fe‐based nanoparticles embedded in amorphous carbon with only 5.9%Fe^(Ⅱ)‐N_(4) active *** experimental characterization and density functional theory calculations reveal that spatial confinement through the staggeredπ–πstacking of Pc macrocycles effectively prevents the demetallation of Fe atoms and the formation of Fe‐based nanoparticles via ***,Zn‐induced microporous defects allow the fixation of Fe^(Ⅱ)‐N_(4) active *** synergistic effect of staggered stacking confinement and microporous defect fixation results in a high density of atomic Fe^(Ⅱ)‐N_(4) active sites that can enhance the *** optimal Fe^(Ⅱ)‐N_(4)‐C electro‐catalyst outperforms a commercial Pt/C catalyst in terms of half‐wave potential,methanol toler‐ance,and long‐term stability in alkaline *** modulation strategy can greatly advance efforts to develop high‐performance NPMCs.

Unimodular gravity and Averaging

The question of the averaging of inhomogeneous spacetimes in cosmology is important for the correct interpretation of cosmological data. In this paper a conceptually simpler approach to averaging in cosmology is suggested, based on the averaging of scalars within unimodular gravity. As an illustration, the example of an exact spherically symmetric dust model is considered, and it is shown that within this approach averaging introduces correlations (corrections) to the effective dynamical evolution equation in the form of a spatial curvature term.

Non-noble metals such as Fe and Ni have comparable electrocatalytic activity and stability to that of Ir and Ru in an oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this study, we synthesized carbon nanofibers with embedded FeNi composites (FeNi-CNFs) as OER electrocatalysts by a facile route comprising electrospinning and the pyrolysis of a mixture of metal precursors and a polymer solution. FeNi-CNFs demonstrated catalytic activity and stability that were better than that of 20 wt% Ir on Vulcan carbon black in oxidizing water to produce oxygen in an alkaline media. Physicochemical and electrochemical characterization revealed that Fe and Ni had synergistic roles that enhanced OER activity by the uniform formation and widening of pores in the carbon structure, while the CNF matrix also contributed to the increased stability of the catalyst.

Family responsibility dynamics for young adults in transition to adult health care

Aim: To explore family responsibility dynamics, metabolic control, clinic attendance, and emergency admissions when young adults (YA) with type 1 diabetes transition to an adult hospital. Method: A longitudinal mixed method design with two study groups (parents, n = 28;YA intervention group, n = 23) and a YA comparison group (n = 20). Sample recruited from an outpatient diabetes centre. Demographic, clinic attendance, emergency admissions, biodata, and the Diabetes Family Responsibility Questionnaire (DFRQ) were completed on entry and sixmonths later as part of an 18-month trial of a diabetes transition coordinator (DTC). The selfreport DFRQ were analyzed using derived parent-child dyadic variables to explore differences at baseline and end of study using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The relationship between metabolic control and the DFRQ patterns was explored using Spearman’s rho. Results: On completion of the study, the change in HBA1Cfor both adolescent groups was not significant but was less than ideal for 25% of adolescents in the study. The YA intervention group had significantly fewer missed appointments between them compared to the comparison group. The DFRQ indicated that the derived parent-child dyadic variable of task-discordance increased during the study. Conclusion: The clinically relevant diabetes-task dissonance between parents and young adults offers a challenge and a diagnostic opportunity for diabetes educators.

Healthcare-transition risk assessment for emerging adults with diabetes type 1

AIM: To identify potential risk indicators for emerging adults transitioning to adult health care. BACKgROUND: Without maturity, independence, knowledge and motivation to manage their diabetes and successfully transition to adult healthcare, a proportion of emerging adults will struggle, leaving themselves vulnerable to diabetes-related complications. METHODS: Fifty-three emerging adults (aged 17 - 19 years) recently transitioned from pediatric to adult healthcare were recruited. Data included demographic, glycated haemoglobin, Body Mass Index, base-line and 12-month data from four psychosocial measures: Problem Areas in Diabetes, Diabetes Empowerment Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and dichotomous questions from the Eating Attitude Test. Missed appointments were obtained from hospital records. RESULTS: No significant differences in age, gender, BMI and individual survey scales between three appointment groups. Median HbA1c in the Sat-1 group was 7% (53 mmol/mol), compared with 8.6% (70 mmol/mol) and 8.5% (69 mmol/mol) respectively in the Sat-2 and Unsatisfactory groups. A ROC curve analysis and classification tree analysis identified optimal threshold values for the survey scales and their linear combinations. These values were used to make comparisons across two appointment and three HbA1c status groups. The unsatisfactory appointment group was characterised by statistically higher proportions of participants with (1) a low score for empowerment alone or in combination (less) with perceived problems and (2) statistically higher perceived problems and anxiety scores. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that diabetes self-care confidence, less perception of diabetes as a problem, could be a useful indicator of future appointment attendance. Similarly, depression levels could be a useful predictor of better metabolic control following transition.
