Knowledge of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) among Medical Students in a Tertiary Hospital in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, Nigeria

Background: Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) remain a common cause of death, functional disability, emotional suffering and economic burden among hospitalized patients. Knowledge of HAIs is important in its prevention and control. This study seeks to assess the knowledge of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) among medical students in a Tertiary Hospital in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, Nigeria. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study done in October 2019 among clinical medical students using a Multistage sampling technique. Data was collected using a self-administered structured questionnaire and analyzed using the IBM SPSS 20 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). Ethical approval was granted by Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Ethics Committee, Jos, Plateau State. Results: A total of 219 students in the clinical arm of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences were selected. A higher proportion (97.7%) of respondents knew about Hospital Acquired Infections and 85.4% knew that Hospital Acquired infections occur in the hospital, and (86.3%) considered patients contagious with half (58.9%) considered patients as the most important source of HAIs, followed by care givers (13.2%), then doctors including medical students and interns (10.0%) and lastly nurses (8.7%). The majority of respondents (70.8%) considered Surgical Wound Infections to be the most commonly occurring HAI, followed by UTIs (69.9%), RTIs (61.2%), BSIs (37.0%) and others (0.9%). The clinical thermometer was the instrument that most commonly transmits HAIs (82.6%), then followed by stethoscope (62.1%), white coats (53.9%), and blood pressure cuff (51.1%). Most respondents knew the infectious substances, like blood (96.3%), nasal discharge (82.6%), saliva (85.3%), and faeces (79.4%) transmitted HAIs, 72.6% of the respondents said that they were aware of the recommended hand washing techniques by WHO. Catatonia: Cavum Septum Pellucidum and Vergae, a Cause or a Coincidence?

Background: Many studies in the 20th century have reported an association between Schizophrenia and Catatonia. Structural brain abnormalities have also been found in many psychotic illnesses, including schizophrenia and there are findings of association of large ventricles with chronic and deteriorating psychosis. It is possible that a large ventricular system may increase the likelihood of catatonia with a chronic course. Cavum Septum Pellucidum (CSP) and Cavum Vergae (CV) are structural abnormalities that have been associated with Schizophrenia. This is a case report of the presence of persistent CSP and CV in a patient diagnosed with schizophrenia with catatonia. Conclusion: Although there are several reports of the findings of a persistent large CSP and CV in patients with Schizophrenia, it is questionable whether the CSP and CV are the cause of the Catatonia or their occurrence is a mere coincidence.

Calibration of Hydrognomon Model for Simulating the Hydrology of Urban Catchment

Due to chaotic nature of flow in natural open channels and the physical processes and the unknown in a river basin variable, the parameters to be used in studying the behavior of river basin to a given rainfall data cannot be measured directly for this reason, a hydrological model was calibrated and applied to simulate the hydrology of Kaduna River (7112 sq miles) North West Nigeria. Prior to the model calibration, a sensitivity analysis of the hydrognomon model to the parameters was carried out to gain a better understanding of the correspondence between the data and the physical processes being modeled.

Climate Change Impact on Sub-Surface Hydrology of Kaduna River Catchment

This paper applied the use of a stochastic weather generator at the site of a hydrological model to simulate the impact of climate change on the sub-surface hydrological response of Kaduna River as a basis for a sustainable ground water development plan. Average time series of rainfall, temperature and gauge height observed readings were downscaled to the watershed flow volume and applied as forcing to simulate the ground water response as spatially lumped, ignoring the heterogeneous nature of the ground water aquifer. Future simulations indicate increase in base flow, ground storage and decrease soil storage throughout the summer and autumn months for the catchment.

Linearization of Emden Differential Equation via the Generalized Sundman Transformations

The Emden differential equation is one of the most widely studied and challenging nonlinear dynamics equations in literature. It finds applications in various areas of study such as celestial mechanics, fluid mechanics, Steller structure, isothermal gas spheres, thermionic currents and so on. Because of the importance of the equation, the method of generalized Sundman transformation (GST) as proposed by Nakpim and Meleshko is used for linearizing the Emden differential equation. The Emden differential equation considered here is a modification of the equation given by Berkovic. The results obtained in this paper imply that the Emden equation cannot be linearized by a point transformation. The general solution of the modified Emden equation is also obtained.

Haematopoetic effect of methanol extract of Nigerian honey bee (Apis mellifera) propolis in mice

Objective:To investigate the haematopoetic effect of methanol extract of Nigerian honey bee propolis in ***:Fifteen white Albino mice were grouped into 3(A-C)of 5 animals *** A mice serve as control group,while groups B and C received 300 and 600 mL/kg of honey bee propolis respectively,for 21 *** haematological parameters were determined using the automated haematologic analyzer Sysmex kx21,(product of Sysmex Corporation,Japan)using standard *** data were analyzed using ANOVA and the level of significance was at P0.05)alteration to the erythrocytic indices like red blood cells,haematocrite,haemoglobin,mean corpuscular haemoglobin,mean corpuscular volume and red cell distribution width,but increase mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration in dose related *** oral toxicity showed the extract to be relatively safe at a high dose on acute ***,21-days of treatment with the extract do neither increase nor decrease the body weight of the ***:Administration of methanol extract of Nigerian honey bee propolis in mice at the doses investigated has brought about leucopoietic and thrombopoietic changes without any significant effect on red blood cells and factors that relate to it,except for the mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration.
