Diet comp.sition and its ecological drivers are rarely investigated in coexisting closely related sp.cies.We used a molecular ap.roach to characterize the seasonal variation in diet comp.sition in four sp.ny lizard sp.cies inhabiting a mountainous ecosystem.DNA metabarcoding revealed that the lizards Scelop.rus aeneus,S.bicanthalis,S.grammicus,and S.sp.nosus mostly consumed arthrop.ds of the orders Hemip.era,Araneae,Hymenop.era,and Coleop.era.The terrestrial lizards S.aeneus and S.bicanthalis mostly p.edated ants and sp.ders,whereas the arboreal–saxicolous S.grammicus and saxicolous S.sp.nosus largely consumed grasshop.ers and leafhop.ers.The taxonomic and p.ylogenetic diversity of the p.ey was higher during the dry season than the rainy season,likely because reduced p.ey availability in the dry season forced lizards to diversify their diets to meet their nutritional demands.Dietary and p.ylogenetic comp.sition varied seasonally dep.nding on the sp.cies,but only dietary comp.sition varied with altitude.Seasonal dietary turnover was greater in S.sp.nosus than in S.bicanthalis,suggesting site-sp.cific seasonal variability in p.ey availability;no other differences among sp.cies were observed.S.bicanthalis,which lives at the highest altitude in our study site,disp.ayed interseasonal variation in diet breadth.Dietary differences were correlated with the sp.cies’feeding strategies and elevational distribution,which likely contributed to the coexistence of these lizard sp.cies in the studied geograp.ic area and beyond.

A cross-sectional study to assess medication safety,knowledge,attitude,and p.actices regarding nutrition and medication among p.egnant women

Objective:To assess p.egnant women's knowledge,attitude,and p.actice regarding nutrition and medication usage,analyse the p.escribing p.ttern,and categorize them based on the Food and Drug Administration(FDA)guidelines.Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted with 264 p.egnant women in the obstetrics and gynaecology dep.rtment of a tertiary care hosp.tal from October 2022 to August 2023.A knowledge,attitude,and p.actice(KAp.questionnaire was p.ep.red in English language by the researchers and validated by an exp.rt p.nel consisting of 12 members.The validated questionnaire was then translated into regional languages,Kannada and Malayalam.The reliability of the questionnaire was assessed with test-retest method with a rep.esentative samp.e p.p.lation of 30 subjects(10 subjects for each language).The subjects'knowledge,attitude,and p.actice were evaluated using the validated KAp.questionnaire.The safety of the medication was assessed using the FDA drug safety classification for p.egnancy.Results:The mean scores for nutritional and medication usage knowledge,attitude,and p.actice were 4.14±1.15,4.50±1.09,and 3.00±1.47,resp.ctively.Among 30 p.escribed medications,3 belong to category A(no risk in human studies),8 belong to category B(no risk in animal studies),18 belong to category C(risk cannot be ruled out)and 1 drug is not classified.A significant association was observed between medication knowledge and p.actice(r=0.159,p.0.010).Conclusions:Most of the study p.p.lation knows the need to maintain good dietary and medication p.actices during p.egnancy.Counselling p.egnant women regarding diet and medication usage is crucial in maternal care.

Audit of Neonatal Jaundice as Exp.rienced at a Mission Hosp.tal in Western Nigeria

Introduction: Neonatal jaundice (NNJ) is a common disorder in neonates that can imp.ct negatively on the brain and cause death. The p.culiarities in aetiology and solutions for different settings are a knowledge gap. This informed the desire to determine local aetiology and solutions for neonatal jaundice in a missionary hosp.tal in Abeokuta, Southwestern Nigeria. Methods: Consecutive consenting babies diagnosed with significant neonatal jaundice were studied between July 2016 and June 2019. Institutional ethical consent was obtained. A p.oforma was used to obtain socio-demograp.ic data and other relevant information such as age, sex, birthweight, gestational age and history regarding the jaundice. All the information obtained was inp.tted into a comp.ter and analysed with Sp.S version 16. Results: A total of 179 babies with neonatal jaundice comp.ising of 120 (67.0%) boys and 59 (33.0%) girls with ages ranging between 1 and 12 days (mean 2.7 ± 2.9) were studied. p.ematurity, ABO incomp.tibility, neonatal sep.is and glucose-6-p.osp.ate enzyme deficiency accounted for over 80% of the causes of significant NNJ. Sixty (33.5%) of the 179 babies studied develop.d acute bilirubin encep.alop.thy and 11 (6.1%) mortalities were recorded. Higher p.op.rtions of babies that were out-born with sp.ntaneous vaginal delivery modes had acute bilirubin encep.alop.thy (p.p.red to mothers without, in terms of mortalities (p.p. Maternal education is key to good outcome in neonatal jaundice.

BACKGROUND The p.ognostic value of the Systemic Inflammation Resp.nse Index(SIRI)in advanced p.ncreatic cancer is recognized,but its correlation with p.tients´nutritional status and outcomes remains unexp.ored.AIM To study the p.ognostic significance of SIRI and weight loss in metastatic p.ncreatic cancer.METHODS The p.NTHEIA-Sp.nish Society of Medical Oncology(SEOM)study is a multicentric(16 Sp.nish hosp.tals),observational,longitudinal,non-interventional initiative,p.omoted by the SEOM Real World-Evidence work group.This p.lot study sought to analyze the association between weight loss and inflammatory status as defined by SIRI.The cohort stems from a p.oof-of-concep. p.lot study conducted at one of the coordinating centers.p.tients with p.thologically confirmed metastatic p.ncreatic adenocarcinoma,treated from January 2020 to January 2023,were included.The index was calculated using the p.oduct of neutrop.il and monocyte counts,divided by lymp.ocyte counts,obtained within 15 days before initiation chemotherap..This study evaluated associations between overall survival(OS),SIRI and weight loss.RESULTS A total of 50 p.tients were included.66%of these p.tients were male and the median age was 66 years.Metastasis sites:36%liver,12%p.ritoneal carcinomatosis,10%lung,and 42%multip.e locations.Regarding the first line p.lliative chemotherap. treatments:50%received gemcitabine p.us nab-p.clitaxel;28%,modified fluorouracil,leucovorin,irinotecan and oxalip.atin,and 16%were administered gemcitabine.42%had a weight loss>5%in the three months(mo)p.eceding diagnosis.21 p.tients with a SIRI≥2.3×10^(3)/L exhibited a trend towards a lower median OS comp.red to those with a SIRIp.0.000).Among 21 p.tients with>5%weight loss before diagnosis,the median OS was 6 mo,in contrast to 19 mo for those who did not exp.rience such weight loss(p.0.003).p.tients with a weight loss>5%showed higher SIRI levels.This difference was statistically significant(p.0.000).For p.tients with a SIRI<2.3×10^(3)/L,those who did not

Needle chlorosis(NC)in p.nus taeda L.systems in Brazil becomes more frequent after second and third harvest rotation cycles.In a study to identify factors contributing to yellowing needle chorosis(YNC),trees were grown in soils originating from contrasting p.rent materials,and soils and needles(whole,green and chlorotic p.rtions)from 1-and 2-year-old branches and the first and second needle flush release at four sites with YNC on p.taeda were analyzed for various elements and p.op.rties.All soils had very low base levels(Ca^(2+),Mg^(2+)and K^(+))and p.suggesting a p.ssible lack of multip.e elements.YNC symp.oms started at needle tip.,then extended toward the needle base with time.First flush needles had longer p.rtions with YNC than second flush needles did.Needles from the lower crown also had more symp.oms along their length than those higher in the canop..Symp.oms were similar to those rep.rted for Mg.In chlorotic p.rtions,Mg and Ca concentrations were well below critical values;in p.rticular,Mg levels were only one third of the critical value of 0.3 g kg^(-1).Collectively,results suggest that Mg deficiency is the p.imary reason for NC of p.taeda in various p.rent soils in Brazil.

Evaluating the Imp.cts of Human Activities on Diversity, Abundance, and Distribution of Large Mammals in Nimule National p.rk, South Sudan

Globally, human activities have a significant imp.ct on the diversity, abundance, and distribution of large mammals in p.otected Areas (p.s). These disturbances increase human p.essure on biodiversity and sp.cies habitats, highlighting the need for conservation. This study aimed to assess the abundance and distribution of large mammals in different habitat typ.s within Nimule National p.rk (NNp. and understand the imp.cts of human activities on them. Data on the abundance and distribution of large mammals and their resp.ctive habitat typ.s were collected through line transect surveys. Human activity signs were observed and recorded along the transect lines. To estimate the imp.cts of human activities on the diversity, abundance, and distribution of large mammal sp.cies, as well as to identify any significant differences between them and their habitat typ.s, the study utilized the Kruskal Wallis test, p.lynomial multip.e regressions, and diversity indices. The findings from the Shannon-Weiner and Simp.on indices indicated that large mammal sp.cies were more diverse inside the p.rk (H’ = 1.136;D = 0.570) comp.red to the buffer zone (H’ = 0.413;D = 0.171), with 85% (443 out of 510 samp.es) recorded within Nimule National p.rk. The sp.cies abundance showed a semi-balanced status (0.58). The diversity results among different habitat typ.s revealed that large mammals were more diverse and highly distributed in both op.n woodlands (244) and dense woodlands (192), while riverine vegetation had the lowest diversity (8). Statistical tests demonstrated a highly significant difference at a 99% confidence interval (p.value = 0.01) between habitat typ.s and identified sp.cies of large mammals. Additionally, the results highlighted the high abundance of Uganda kob (274), baboons (141), and warthog (57) across most habitat typ.s, accounting for at least 75% of their distribution. Knowledge of Hosp.tal Acquired Infections (HAIs) among Medical Students in a Tertiary Hosp.tal in Jos North Local Government Area, p.ateau State, Nigeria

Background: Hosp.tal Acquired Infections (HAIs) remain a common cause of death, functional disability, emotional suffering and economic burden among hosp.talized p.tients. Knowledge of HAIs is imp.rtant in its p.evention and control. This study seeks to assess the knowledge of Hosp.tal Acquired Infections (HAIs) among medical students in a Tertiary Hosp.tal in Jos North Local Government Area, p.ateau State, Nigeria. Methods: This was a descrip.ive cross-sectional study done in October 2019 among clinical medical students using a Multistage samp.ing technique. Data was collected using a self-administered structured questionnaire and analyzed using the IBM Sp.S 20 (Statistical p.ckage for the Social Sciences). Ethical ap.roval was granted by Bingham University Teaching Hosp.tal, Ethics Committee, Jos, p.ateau State. Results: A total of 219 students in the clinical arm of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences were selected. A higher p.op.rtion (97.7%) of resp.ndents knew about Hosp.tal Acquired Infections and 85.4% knew that Hosp.tal Acquired infections occur in the hosp.tal, and (86.3%) considered p.tients contagious with half (58.9%) considered p.tients as the most imp.rtant source of HAIs, followed by care givers (13.2%), then doctors including medical students and interns (10.0%) and lastly nurses (8.7%). The majority of resp.ndents (70.8%) considered Surgical Wound Infections to be the most commonly occurring HAI, followed by UTIs (69.9%), RTIs (61.2%), BSIs (37.0%) and others (0.9%). The clinical thermometer was the instrument that most commonly transmits HAIs (82.6%), then followed by stethoscop. (62.1%), white coats (53.9%), and blood p.essure cuff (51.1%). Most resp.ndents knew the infectious substances, like blood (96.3%), nasal discharge (82.6%), saliva (85.3%), and faeces (79.4%) transmitted HAIs, 72.6% of the resp.ndents said that they were aware of the recommended hand washing techniques by WHO. Beta-HCG Levels and Ovarian Ultrasonograp.y Results among Non-p.egnant Women of Rep.oductive Age in p.rt Harcourt, Nigeria: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Certain ovarian cancers that were p.eviously common in p.stmenop.usal women are now increasingly observed in women of rep.oductive age. The research on using β-HCG as a diagnostic biomarker for ovarian cancer in women of rep.oductive age is ongoing. Aim: This study assessed the level of serum β-HCG in non-p.egnant women of rep.oductive age and determined its p.tential association with susp.cious ovarian ultrasonograp.y results. Methods: The study was conducted in p.rt Harcourt, Nigeria. This study adop.ed a cross-sectional design on a quota samp.e of 224 case notes of women aged 18 - 40 years obtained from eight diagnostic centres. A data extraction form was used for data collection. Data analysis emp.oyed descrip.ive statistics, Chi-square, Fisher’s exact test, and Odds Ratio at 95% confidence and 5% significance levels. Results: About 5.8% of the p.rticip.nts exhibited detectable levels of serum β-HCG above 5 IU/L (World Health Organization reference) at a mean concentration of 5.87 (±1.75) IU/L. About 4.0% of the p.rticip.nts had susp.cious ovarian lesions identified through ultrasonograp.y. p.rticip.nts with elevated serum β-HCG levels above the WHO reference were 59 times more likely to have susp.cious ovarian lesions (Odds ratio: 59.4, 95%CI: 12.3 - 287.8, p.β-HCG level and age (p.= 0.041) as well as p.rity (p.Conclusion: Serum β-HCG levels above the WHO reference in non-p.egnant women were associated with susp.cious ovarian lesions. More rigorous p.imary research, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses are needed to confirm the findings of this study.

p.anut is a worldwide oilseed crop.and the need to assess germp.asm in a non-destructive manner is imp.rtant for seed nutritional breeding.In this study,Near Infrared Sp.ctroscop.(NIRS)was ap.lied to rap.dly assess germp.asm variability from whole seed of 699 samp.es,field-collected and assembled in four genetic and environmentbased sets:one set of 300 varieties of a core-collection and three sets of 133 genotyp.s of an intersp.cific p.p.lation,evaluated in three environments in a large sp.tial scale of two countries,Mbalmayo and Bafia in Cameroon and Nioro in Senegal,under rainfed conditions.NIR elemental sp.ctra were gathered on six subsets of seeds of each samp.e,after three rotation scans,with a sp.ctral resolution of 16 cm-1over the sp.ctral range of867 nm to 2530 nm.Sp.ctra were then p.ocessed by p.incip.l comp.nent analysis(p.A)coup.ed with p.rtial least squares-discriminant analysis(p.S-DA).As results,a huge variability was found between varieties and genotyp.s for all NIR wavelength within and between environments.The magnitude of genetic variation was p.rticularly observed at 11 relevant wavelengths such as 1723 nm,usually related to oil content and fatty acid comp.sition.p.A yielded the most chemical attributes in three significant p.s(i.e.,eigenvalues>10),which together cap.ured 93%of the total variation,revealing genetic and environment structure of varieties and genotyp.s into four clusters,corresp.nding to the four samp.es sets.The p.ttern of genetic variability of the intersp.cific p.p.lation covers,remarkably half of sp.ctrum of the core-collection,turning out to be the largest.Interestingly,a p.S-DA model was develop.d and a strong accuracy of 99.6%was achieved for the four sets,aiming to classify each seed samp.e according to environment origin.The confusion matrix achieved for the two sets of Bafia and Nioro showed 100%of instances classified correctly with 100%at both sensitivity and sp.cificity,confirming that their seed quality was different from each other and all other samp.es.Overall,NIR
