Beta-HCG levels and Ovarian Ultrasonography Results among Non-Pregnant Women of Reproductive Age in Port Harcourt, Nigeria: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Certain ovarian cancers that were previously common in postmenopausal women are now increasingly observed in women of reproductive age. The research on using β-HCG as a diagnostic biomarker for ovarian cancer in women of reproductive age is ongoing. Aim: This study assessed the level of serum β-HCG in non-pregnant women of reproductive age and determined its potential association with suspicious ovarian ultrasonography results. Methods: The study was conducted in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. This study adopted a cross-sectional design on a quota sample of 224 case notes of women aged 18 - 40 years obtained from eight diagnostic centres. A data extraction form was used for data collection. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics, Chi-square, Fisher’s exact test, and Odds Ratio at 95% confidence and 5% significance levels. Results: About 5.8% of the participants exhibited detectable levels of serum β-HCG above 5 IU/l (World Health Organization reference) at a mean concentration of 5.87 (±1.75) IU/l. About 4.0% of the participants had suspicious ovarian lesions identified through ultrasonography. Participants with elevated serum β-HCG levels above the WHO reference were 59 times more likely to have suspicious ovarian lesions (Odds ratio: 59.4, 95%CI: 12.3 - 287.8, p β-HCG level and age (p = 0.041) as well as parity (p Conclusion: Serum β-HCG levels above the WHO reference in non-pregnant women were associated with suspicious ovarian lesions. More rigorous primary research, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses are needed to confirm the findings of this study.

BACKGROUND Cytoreductive surgery(CRS)with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy(HIPEC)for peritoneal carcinomatosis can be performed in two ways:Open or closed abdominal *** To evaluate the impact of HIPEC method on post-operative and long-term survival *** Patients undergoing CRS with HIPEC from 2000-2017 were identified in the United States HIPEC collaborative ***-operative,recurrence,and overall survival outcomes were compared between those who received open vs closed *** Of the 1812 patients undergoing curative-intent CRS and HIPEC,372(21%)patients underwent open HIPEC and 1440(79%)underwent closed *** was no difference in re-operation or severe complications between the two *** HIPEC had higher rates of 90-d readmission while open HIPEC had a higher rate of 90-d *** multi-variable analysis,closed HIPEC technique was not a significant predictor for overall survival(hazards ratio:0.75,95%confidence interval:0.51-1.10,P=0.14)or recurrence-free survival(hazards ratio:1.39,95%confidence interval:1.00-1.93,P=0.05)in the entire *** findings remained consistent in the appendiceal and the colorectal *** In this multi-institutional analysis,the HIPEC method was not independently associated with relevant post-operative or long-term *** technique may be left to the discretion of the operating surgeon.

Microbiological Identification of Atmospheric Particles in Hermosillo, Sonora, México

The air quality in many cities has been deteriorating and affecting population’s health. Airborne particles can block the defense mechanisms of respiratory system and may lead biological elements such as pollen, bacteria, fungi and viruses into the lungs. This paper presents the study of biologically contaminated air in the city of Hermosillo, analyzing filters containing particulate matter with a diameter equal or less than 10 micrometers (PM10) and Total Suspended Particles (TSP). Three sampling periods were analyzed during 2011. Samples taken from the filters were placed in tubes containing nutritive broth BHI (Brain Heart Infusion) and incubated at 37 °C for 24 hours. The identification of the isolated microorganisms was done by a biochemical test recommended in Bergey’s Manual. Results showed a high bacteria concentration in the presence of microorganisms such as Klebsiella pneumoniae sub pneumoniae, Citrobacter, Enterococcus faecalis, Proteus penneri, Butiauxellaagrestis, Salmonella paratyphi A and Enterobacter sacazakii. When bacterial concentration was analyzed separately, the lowest number of bacteria was observed during February for the south location and in August for the north location. The highest degree of bacterial air pollution was found in the central area of the city.

The Physico-Chemical Quality of Effluents of Selected Sewage Treatment Plants Draining into River Rwizi, Mbarara Municipality, Uganda

As population increases in urban areas, the domestic and industrial activities increase resulting in an increase in the volumes of wastewater and anthropogenic pollution, hence posing a threat to public health and environment. This study assessed the physical chemical quality of two main sewage plant effluents discharging into River Rwizi. Effluent water samples were analyzed for dissolved oxygen, colour, turbidity, total suspended solid, total iron, phosphates, alkalinity, magnesium, calcium carbonate, temperature, pH, ammonium, electrical conductivity, chloride and nitrates. Parameters were analyzed following standard methods of APHA (1985). The values obtained were compared with EPA (2001), NWSC (2015) and NEMA (1999) standards for waste water. Results showed that the mean values most of the parameters tested were higher than the recommended EPA, NWSC and NEMA standards. The mean colour was 1627.67°C and 1414.33°C in Kakoba and Taso sewage effluents respectively compared to EPA (20-150), NWSC (500) and NEMA (300) standards (p > 0.05). The mean alkalinity was 1390.17 mg/l and 1308.33 mg/l for Kakoba and Taso respectively compared with EPA (400) and NWSC (800) standards. DO had a mean concentration of 68.27 mg/l and 63.03 mg/l in Taso and Kakoba respectively compared to EPA and NEMA standard of 5 mg/l. Mg was 243.29 mg/l and 246.49 mg/l in Kakoba and Taso sewage effluents respectively compared to NEMA standard for waste water of 100 mg/l (p > 0.05). The mean pH was 8.26 and 8.16 in Taso and Kakoba sewage effluents respectively compared to NWSC and NEMA standard of 6.0 - 8.0. Phosphate mean concentration levels were 32.2 mg/l and 27.11 mg/l for Taso and Kakoba respectively compared to standards of EPA (0.5 - 0.7 mg/l) and NEMA (10 mg/l). NO3 was 10 mg/l and 5.83 mg/l in Kakoba and Taso sewage effluents respectively compared to NWSC maximum permissible limit of 5 mg/l. Evaluation of Three Dynamic Models for Aerated Facultative lagoons

In this research, three existing dynamic mathematical models for aerated lagoons were applied to an aerated facultative lagoon (AFl) plant for municipal wastewater treatment. The models’ ability to describe the behavior of the primary lagoon was evaluated, and the advantages and limitations of the three models were compared. For this purpose, 7-year operational data from the municipal WWTP were collected and processed;other necessary data—like dynamic temperature values— were estimated. A 2-year period was used for model calibration, while the remaining 5 years served as validation period. One of the models showed poor calibration fit values in the effluent concentration description (R2 of 0.242 and RMSE of 16.8 mg/l);however, with some modifications the adjust was enhanced (R2 of 0.409 and RMSE of 14.0 mg/l);a second model displayed a poor to moderate adjust (0.489 and 13.0 mg/l, respectively), and the third model achieved a moderate fit (0.528 and 11.9 mg/l), though it provided an overestimation of effluent concentration, especially in periods of heavy and frequent rain;this model with some adaptations the adjust was enhanced (R2 of 0.575 and RMSE of 11.4 mg/l). The validation fits are even lower, illustrating the inability of these models to properly describe the AFl behavior. The possible causes of the models’ inadequacy are discussed. Finally, it is established that in terms of AFl behavior description more research and model development are needed.

In this study we examined the suitability of the 3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine ring system in developing novel anticancer and anti-inflammatory agents incorporating a diaryl pharmacophore. Eight 2,3-diaryl-3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine derivatives retrieved from our in-house database were evaluated for their cytotoxic activity against nine cancer cell lines. The results indicated that the compounds showed moderate cytotoxic activity against MCF-7, MDA-MB-468, K562 and SaOS2 cells, with K562 being the most sensitive among the four cancer cell lines. The eight 2,3-diaryl-3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine derivatives were also evaluated for their COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitory activity in vitro. The results showed that compound 3f exhibited 2-fold selectivity with IC_(50) values of 9.2 and 21.8 mmol/l against COX-2 and COX-1, respectively. Molecular docking studies on the most active compound 3f revealed a binding mode similar to that of celecoxib in the active site of the COX-2 enzyme.

Heavy Metal Contamination of Well Water in the Kipushi Mining Town （Democratic Republic of Congo）

Concentrations of eleven heavy metals （AI, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb and Zn） and pH determination in water from nine spade-sunk wells of 2-15 meter depth, five drilled wells of 30-72 meter depth, and two water supply faucets in the Kipushi mining town, south-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, were investigated from February to July 2011. The results were compared with the World Health Organization （WHO） drinking water pH and heavy metal guidelines. Mean concentrations of Pb in water from four spade-sunk wells and three drilled wells, those of A1 and Fe in water from four and two spade-sunk wells, and those of Cd in water from four drilled wells were higher than the WHO drinking water maximum permissible contaminant limits of 0.01 mg/l, 0.2 mg/l, 0.3 mg/l and 0.003 mg/l respectively, probably due to the mining activities carried out in Kipushi for about 90 years. The pH mean values of water from five spade-sunk wells and three drilled wells were lower than the WHO drinking water pH optimum of 6.5-9.5, suggesting that the water from those eight wells was not conform to the chemical quality of water for human consumption.

Anxio-Depressive Morbidity in Chronic Hemodialysis at the CHU SO of lome (Togo)

Introduction: This work aims to identify and analyze the anxio-depressive morbidity that the renal insufficiency in hemodialysis can present. Methodology: The framework of this work was the department of nephrology and the hemodialysis unit of the CHU Sylvanus Olympio of lome. This was a cross-sectional, single-pass, descriptive and analytical study that ran from January 1st, 2016 to June 30th, 2016. Included were all chronic hemodialysis patients who gave their free and well-informed consent and who have no psychiatric history. To assess anxiety and depression, the Hospital Anxiety and Depressive Scale of Zigmond and Snaith was used. The processing of the data was done with the software Epi Info 7 (version 7.***.2.0). Results: The number of patients was 91 and all were included. The mean age at 46.51 ± 14.41 years with extremes of 11 and 84 years and a sex ratio at 1.6 were observed. Anxiety (A3) was in 52.8% of women and depressed (D3) in 63.2% of men. The absence of social security increases the risk of anxiety disorders among respondents by three (RR = 2.6, p = 0.04). A duration of change of Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) less than 6 months was associated with the occurrence of depression (p = 0.04) with hemodialysis patients. The relative risk of depressive episodes increased three-fold with the hemodialysis patients (RR = 2.7). Conclusion: Collaboration between psychiatrists, psychologists and somaticians (doctors of the body) can occur at different times during dialysis, in order to overcome the difficulties that may arise during the treatment.
