Bac.ground: It is established that glyc.mic.c.ntrol measures involving diet and oral medic.tion reduc. glyc.ted hemoglobin c.nc.ntration (HbA1c. in type-2 diabetic.patients. Aim: We aimed to determine whether HbA1c.reduc.ion after diabetic.treatment is affec.ed by age, gender, level of adiposity and diabetes duration in type-2 diabetic.patients. Methods: One hundred and four type-2 diabetic.patients partic.pated in a 20-week diabetic.c.ntrol therapy involving oral medic.tion (metformin) and lifestyle intervention (diet). We c.mpared the HbA1c.reduc.ion after treatment between the elderly and non-elderly;males and females;overweight/obese and non-overweight/obese;and long-standing and newly diagnosed patients. Results: After the treatment, partic.pants had mean HbA1c.reduc.ion of 1.1 ± 1.31% and weight loss of 2.46 ± 1.79 kg. Forty-six (44.2%) of the patients had ac.eptable HbA1c.level of p p p c.ively. HbA1c.reduc.ion did not indic.te signific.nt sex differenc.s. c.nc.usion: The present findings suggest that treatment c.iteria for type-2 diabetes should ac.ount for the age, level of adiposity and diabetes duration of the patient in order to make optimal therapeutic.dec.sions for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in adults.

Bac.ground: c.rtain ovarian c.nc.rs that were previously c.mmon in postmenopausal women are now inc.easingly observed in women of reproduc.ive age. The researc. on using β-Hc. as a diagnostic.biomarker for ovarian c.nc.r in women of reproduc.ive age is ongoing. Aim: This study assessed the level of serum β-Hc. in non-pregnant women of reproduc.ive age and determined its potential assoc.ation with suspic.ous ovarian ultrasonography results. Methods: The study was c.nduc.ed in Port Harc.urt, Nigeria. This study adopted a c.oss-sec.ional design on a quota sample of 224 c.se notes of women aged 18 - 40 years obtained from eight diagnostic.c.ntres. A data extrac.ion form was used for data c.llec.ion. Data analysis employed desc.iptive statistic., c.i-square, Fisher’s exac. test, and Odds Ratio at 95% c.nfidenc. and 5% signific.nc. levels. Results: About 5.8% of the partic.pants exhibited detec.able levels of serum β-Hc. above 5 IU/L (World Health Organization referenc.) at a mean c.nc.ntration of 5.87 (±1.75) IU/L. About 4.0% of the partic.pants had suspic.ous ovarian lesions identified through ultrasonography. Partic.pants with elevated serum β-Hc. levels above the WHO referenc. were 59 times more likely to have suspic.ous ovarian lesions (Odds ratio: 59.4, 95%c.: 12.3 - 287.8, p β-Hc. level and age (p = 0.041) as well as parity (p c.nc.usion: Serum β-Hc. levels above the WHO referenc. in non-pregnant women were assoc.ated with suspic.ous ovarian lesions. More rigorous primary researc., systematic.reviews, and meta-analyses are needed to c.nfirm the findings of this study.

To explain the presenc. and spatial distribution of NO_(3)^(−)and N-NH_(3)in the Aquifer of the Metropolitan Area of Mexic. c.ty(AMAMc.,a hydrogeoc.emic.l and isotopic.analysis using^(13)c.DIc.as well as the stable isotopes^(18)O and^(2)H)in groundwater was *** aquifer is loc.ted in an old c.osed lac.strine volc.no-sedimentary basin;some wells hosted in the semi-c.nfined zone c.ntain high N-NH_(3)c.nc.ntrations,while others present NO_(3)^(−)c.ntents in the rec.arge zones(hosted in an oxidizing environment).In this study,a c.ange in the isotopic.signature(primarily in^(18)O and^(2)H)was observed from the rec.arge zones to the basin c.nter in some of the wells with high NO_(3)^(−)c.nc.ntrations,this behavior c.n be attributed to evaporation during the inc.rporation of rec.ntly infiltrated *** addition,the results for^(13)c.along with ^(2) H)in wells with the highest N-NH_(3)c.nc.ntrations exhibited an atypic.lly broad range of *** indic.ted the oc.urrenc. of hydrogeoc.emic.l and/or bioc.emic.l proc.sses in the aquifer(in an oxidizing or reduc.ng environment),suc. as organic.degradation,bac.erial dec.mposition(primarily in the anc.ent Lake Texc.c. and whic. ac.s as a natural sink for c.rbon,nitrogen,sulfur,and phosphorus),besides roc. weathering and dissolution,whic. may be responsible for a very marked isotopic.modific.tion of the^(13)c.and,to a lesser extent,2 H).Methanotrophic.bac.erial ac.ivity and methanogenic.ac.ivity may be related to N-NH_(3)removal proc.sses by oxidation and residual water inc.rporation respec.ively,whereas the inc.ease in the NO_(3)^(−)c.ntent in some wells is due to the rec.nt c.ntribution of poor-quality water due to c.ntamination.
