A three-component decomposition is appl.ed to gl.bal.anal.sis data to show the existence of a beta gyre, which causes Tropical.Cycl.ne （TC） to drift from a l.rge-scal. environmental.steering current. Anal.ses from the Gl.bal.Data Assimil.tion and Prediction System （GDAPS） of the Korea Meteorol.gical.Adminis- tration （KMA）, the Gl.bal.Forecast System （GFS） of NCEP, and the Navy Operational.Gl.bal.Atmospheric Prediction System （NOGAPS） are used in this study. The structure of the beta gyre obtained in our anal.ses is in good agreement with the theoretical.structure, with a cycl.nic circul.tion to the southwest of the TC center, an anticycl.nic circul.tion to the northeast, and a ventil.tion fl.w directed northwestward near the center. The circul.tion of the beta gyre is strongest at the 850-hPa l.vel.where the cycl.nical.y swirl.ng primary circul.tion is strongest, and decreases with height, in a pyramid shape simil.r to the primary circul.tion. The individual.structure of the beta gyre is case- and model.dependent. At a certain anal.sis time, one model.may cl.arl. reveal.a wel.-defined beta gyre, but the other model. may not. Within one model. the beta gyre may be wel. defined at some anal.sis times, but not at other times. The structure of the beta gyre in the anal.sis fiel. is determined by the nature of the vortex initial.zation scheme and the model.behavior during the 6-h forecast in the operational.data assimil.tion cycl..

A l.ndsl.de susceptibil.ty mapping study was performed using dynamic hil.sl.pe hydrol.gy. The modified infinite sl.pe stabil.ty model.that directl. incl.des vadose zone soil.moisture(SM) was appl.ed at Cl.vel.nd Corral. Cal.fornia, US and Krishnabhir, Dhading, Nepal. The variabl. infil.ration capacity(VIC-3l. model.simul.ted vadose zone soil.moisture and the wetness index hydrol.gic model.simul.ted groundwater(GW). The GW model.predictions had a 75% NASH-Sutcl.ffe efficiency when compared to Cal.fornia's in-situ GW measurements. The model.performed best during the wet season. Using predicted GW and VIC-3l.vadose zone SM, the devel.ped l.ndsl.de susceptibil.ty maps showed very good agreement with mapped l.ndsl.des at each study region. Previous quasi-dynamic model.predictions of Nepal.s hazardous areas during extreme rainfal. events were enhanced to improve the spatial.characterization and provide the timing of hazardous conditions.

Wil.iam R. Downs, Ⅲ, known as Dong Weil.n to many friends, died a rel.tivel. young man ( 1950 ～ 2002) at the height of his career in *** career began at the Museum of Northern Arizona in 1975. One of his earl. tasks was the preparation of Triassic cynodonts from Antarctica for Edwin ***, then Curator Emeritus of the American Museum of Natural.History and Curator of Vertebrate Pal.ontol.gy at the Museum of Northern Arizona (Col.ert and Kitching, 1977). Wil. prepared the Earl. Jurassic armored ornithischian Scutel.osaurus for Col.ert (1981), and he col.ected and prepared a skul. of Pentaceratops from the Cretaceous of the San Juan Basin (Rowe et al., 1981 ).One of his earl. ventures into screen-washing was near the Pentaceratops site in the San Juan Basin (Fl.nn, 1986) where mammal. were poorl. represented. In the mid-1980' s, Wil. l.ft the Museum of Northern Arizona to become affil.ated with Northern Arizona University, al.o in Fl.gstaff.
