evaluation of seismic potential in a longwall mine with massive sandstone roof under deep overburden

A recent seismic event was recorded by a deep longwall mine in Virginia at 3.7 ML on the local magnitude scale and 3.4 MMS by the United States Geological Survey(USGS) in *** investigations by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH) and Coronado Coal researchers have shown that this event was associated with geological features that have also been associated with other, similar seismic events in *** mapping and geological exploration in the mining area has made it possible to forecast possible locations for future seismic *** order to use the geology as a forecaster of mining-induced seismic events and their energy potential, two primary components are *** first component is a long history of recorded seismic events with accurately plotted *** second component is a high density of geologic data within the mining *** this case, 181 events of 1.0 MLor greater were recorded by the mine's seismic network between January, 2009, and October, *** the mining area, 897 geophysical logs, 224 core holes, and 1031 fiberscope holes were examined by mine *** this information, it was found that overburden thickness, sandstone thickness, and sandstone quality contributed greatly to seismic *** the data was analyzed, a pattern became apparent indicating that the majority of seismic events occurred under specific *** forecast maps were created based on geology of previous seismic *** forecast maps have shown an accuracy of within 74%–89% when compared to the recorded 181 events that were1.0 MLor greater when considering three major geological criteria of overburden thickness of 579.12 m or greater, 6.096–12.192 m of sandstone within 15.24 m of the Pocahontas number 3 seam, and a longwall caving height of 4.572 m or less.

Ontology-Driven Analytic Models for Pension Management and Decision Support System

Ontology-Driven Analytic Models for Pension Management are sophisticated approaches that integrate the principles of ontology and analytics to optimize the management and decision-making processes within pension systems. While Ontology-Driven Analytic Models offer significant benefits for pension management, there are also challenges associated with implementing and utilizing the models. Developing a comprehensive and accurate ontology for pension management requires a deep understanding of the domain, including regulatory frameworks, investment strategies, retirement planning, and integration of data from heterogenous sources. Integrating these data into a cohesive ontology can be challenging. This research work leverages on semantic ontology as an approach for structured representation of knowledge about concepts and their relationships, and applies it to analyze and optimize decision support for pension management. The proposed ontology presents a formal and explicit specification of concepts (classes), their attributes, and the relationships between them and provides a shared and standardized understanding of the domain;enabling precise communication and knowledge representation for decision-support. The ontology deploys computational frameworks and analytic models to assess and evaluate data, generate insights, predict future pension fund performance as well as assess risk exposure. The research adopts the reasoner, SPArQL query and OWL Visualizer executed over Java IDe for modelling the ontology-driven analytics. The approach encapsulated and integrated semantic ontologies with analytical models to enhance the accuracy, contextuality, and comprehensiveness of analyses and decisions within pension systems.

estimating the overall floor stability in a coal mine using deterministic methods which require complex engineering properties of floor strata is desirable,but generally it is impractical due to the difficulty of gathering essential input ***,applying a quantitative methodology to describe floor quality with a single number provides a practical estimate for preliminary assessment of floor *** coal mine floor rating(CMFr)system,developed by the University of New South Wales(UNSW),is a rockmass classification system that provides an indicator for the competence of floor *** most significant components of the CMFr are uniaxial compressive strength and discontinuity intensity of floor *** addition to the competence of the floor,depth of cover and stress notch angle are input parameters used to assess the preliminary floor *** this study,CMFr methodology was applied to a Central Appalachian Coal Mine that intermittently experienced floor *** drill core data,overburden maps,and mine plans were utilized for the ***,qualitative data(failure/non-failure)on floor conditions of the mine entries near the core holes was collected and analyzed so that the floor quality and its relation to entry stability could be estimated by statistical *** was found that the current CMFr classification system is not directly applicable in assessing the floor stability of the Central Appalachian Coal *** order to extend the applicability of the CMFr classification system,the methodology was modified.A calculation procedure of one of the CMFr classification system’s components,the horizontal stress rating(HSr),was changed and new parameters were added to the HSr.

Prediction of Typhoon Tracks Using Dynamic Linear Models

This paper presents a study on the statistical forecasts of typhoon tracks. Numerical models have their own systematic errors, like a bias. In order to improve the accuracy of track forecasting, a statistical model called DLM (dynamic linear model) is applied to remove the systematic error. In the analysis of typhoons occurring over the western North Pacific in 1997 and 2000, DLM is useful as an adaptive model for the prediction of typhoon tracks.

Digital alloy In_(0.52)Al_(0.48) As avalanche photodiodes exhibit lower excess noise than those fabricated from random alloys. This paper compares the temperature dependence, from 203 to 323 K, of the impact ionization characteristics of In_(0.52)Al_(0.48) As and Al_(0.74)Ga_(0.26) As digital and random alloys. These results provide insight into the low excess noise exhibited by some digital alloy materials, and these materials can even obtain lower excess noise at low temperature.

MicrorNAs(mirNAs)are small non-coding rNA molecules that regulate post-transcriptional gene expression and contribute to all aspects of cellular *** previously reported that the activities of several mitochondria-enriched mirNAs regulating inflammation(i.e.,mir-142-3p,mir-142-5p,and mir-146a)are altered in the hippocampus at 3–12 hours following a severe traumatic brain *** the present study,we investigated the temporal expression profile of these inflammatory mirNAs in mitochondria and cytosol fractions at more chronic post-injury times following severe controlled cortical impact injury in *** addition,several inflammatory genes were analyzed in the cytosol *** analysis showed that while elevated levels were observed in cytoplasm,the mitochondria-enriched mirNAs,mir-142-3p and mir-142-5p continued to be significantly reduced in mitochondria from injured hippocampi for at least 3 days and returned to near normal levels at 7 days *** not statistically significant,mir-146a also remained at reduced levels for up to 3 days following controlled cortical impact injury,and recovered by 7 *** contrast,mirNAs that are not enriched in mitochondria,including mir-124a,mir-150,mir-19b,mir-155,and mir-223 were either increased or demonstrated no change in their levels in mitochondrial fractions for 7 *** one exception was that mir-223 levels were reduced in mitochondria at 1 day following *** major alterations were observed in sham operated *** temporal pattern was unique to mitochondria-enriched mirNAs and correlated with injury-induced changes in mitochondrial bioenergetics as well as expression levels of several inflammatory *** observations suggested a potential compartmental re-distribution of the mitochondria-enriched inflammatory mirNAs and may reflect an intracellular mechanism by which specific mirNAs regulate injury-induced inflammatory *** test this,we utilized a novel peptide-based
